A new Spark Walking buddy

Saturday, July 04, 2009

We took Ashley with us to the river yesterday. I introduced her to my beaked friends. she was armed witha loaf of bread we buy for jsut 69 cants and I ahd a box of crackers from the Dolalr tree. She loves them jsut like I do. they are a friendly bunch. she thought it cute how i blow my emergency whistle and they come from all over the area. Even the seagulls and pidgeons know me.

Ashley lives in a complex with a gym and a pool, whirlpool and steam room and she told me she ahd been exercising everyday. I, of course, gave her a lot of praise. She knows of my struggles and we had a nice walk. I took her to the area where we watched the sea lions in early spring.

After dropping Ashley offa t her home, we went on to do some shopping. I stocked up on fruits and melons and veggies. I bought an already prepared rottiserie chicken and removed all the skin and had some with a few bites of melon for lunch and made me a great salad with chicken for dinner and more coming up today.

Later in the evening I met a new friend who lives near my home. Her Spark name si BallardKit. She is cool! While Robert walked Tuffy Kit and i made several laps around the park at a good speed and then I begged out because I didn't wear my knee brace and my knee got weak.

Kit is a strong willed woman. She ahs survived a bad accident witha broken ankle and knee and hip along with replacement. She looks so fit and trim. Her strides were long and mine very short. She is a pleasant tall woman. I hope to pick up speed when we meet again but i did get in some great cardio.

Love the pictures of you and Ashley...she's such a lovely young lady!! I think I told you before how my mom and I used to walk around a lake and feed the ducks and geese...fun!!

It's great that you keep meeting up with more Spark pals! I hate walking with tall people...I have to take two steps for every step that they take!! Hey, wait a minute...Kit? Another Kit? How can that be? Oh well...she can be tall Kit...I'll be short Kit!!

Nathan is feeling better. Right after his last round of chemotherapy he had a lot of hair follicles that got infected, so he had to be on medicine for them, and I had to do "wound" care for them. The doctor said it is common since his Immune Count was down at 700 and the minimum is 1500. We have bacteria on our skin all the time and we fight it off, but for him, it got into the pores. Amazing how fast we can get infections. Makes you SO appreciate our healthy bodies.

He is doing better They didn't give him the Neupregen to stimulate his bone marrow this last round, so his Immune System has has to recover on its own. He is looking better. I just have felt sorry for him. BUT, we have had to deal with it otherwise the Cancer would certainly kill him.

I think about Farrah Fawcett and all she went through.

    Happy 4th,
Love the pictures of you and Ashley. She is so beautiful ! Sounds like you are working on the foods really well. I've been enjoying my fresh picked Raspberries every day. My bushes are so loaded this year. I planted Strawberries this year so hope to have some next spring.
My son Jarrod is here this weekend. He will move into a studio apartment on Monday. I took him to the store to get a few staple's. He hadn't eaten since Tuesday cause he was out of money till his payday on Friday. I don't know how he can go for days with no food. I told him to take it easy with how much he takes in the first few days cause the metabolism has probably slowed down to a crawl trying to keep him from starving. He's a big guy and it takes lots of calories to work a strenuous job and maintain. He has a friend loaning him a bed till he can have some extra money to buy one. One good thing he now has insurance again. Yee Haw! He's still feeling pretty bitter and the really bad thing is...his best friend for the last 15-20 years is now in Tiffany's snare. He's with her now. Jarrod was really upset about that. I sure made a big mistake when I thought I knew who she was. I really thought she had Christ in her heart, but her actions tell me different. Well enough on my ramblings. Have a great holiday. I know I will eat too much...going to two different BBQS today.

Hugs Sue

I have been enjoying a wonderful visit with my daughter. she is here spending the night with me. We had mexican food last night. Nice company and a great talk. I love her so much. Her friend, Kim, Is expecting a baby in early September an Boy, is that boy kicking. I felt him in her belly. It brought back memories.

Practice last night on the river was nice. Something different. downtown Portland is ahving a Blues festival in what is called the "Bowl". right at the waters edge. All of the boats, big and small were there and speedboats up and down the river. Causing alrge waves and a rough practice. I am thankful we ahve a sharp quick minded Tiller anmed Sarge who knows how to ahndle the boat and the waves.

Temperatures here in Northern Oregon are just shy of 100 degrees.

I'm hoping you all ahve a wonderful weekend and 4th of July Celebration!

Race day in Salem, Oregon

Monday, June 29, 2009

Racing in Salem.
my favorite place to race.
Second Division!

A beautiful Day.
First race was one forty eight.
Second was strong too.

Then came our final.
Sinc & swim, they sank and stayed.
delaying our race.

We waited a while,
rescued paddlers reraced.
Finally our turn.

We gave it our all.
The race was so very close.
One second from first.

So now off to Kent.
What adventures will we have?
Perhaps gold medal?

Team Blind Ambition
I am so proud of this team.
Congratulations.

Perhaps gold medal?

Here i share my day with you

what a cool Convention...

Saturday, June 27, 2009

It was a sunny warm day today and we had an early start. It started at 8:30 in Downtown Portland at the OnDine Dorms of Portland State University. The convention was "Guide Dog Users of Oregon Romp" It takes place once a year. A group of guide dog owners and trainers from 3 major Guide Dog Campuses. (Boring, Oregon Guide Dogs for the blind and Guiding eyes for the Blind in new York and guide Dogs of the Dessert in Palm Springs, California. I learned new things and this was a very educational experience. I have applied for a Guide dog and Know now what I would like my dog trained for. It can be trained to warn me of my diabetes. When my blood sugar gets low the chemicals in my system change and sets of a smell only a dog can tell. then the dog will paw me with it's paw on my thigh.... I also learned that some Guide dog campuses are affeced by the Economy and shrinking their class size from 30 members to 20. during lunch break after eating in the Dorm cafeteria we went for a walk in downtown Portland and cruised on the huge PSU Campus. there was some type of fair there and when we got back I ran into Barbara. She is my friend on the team I paddle with but she does volunteer management. She si in the picture below sitting next to me with the white top and skirt on. Her black alb is a guide dog/Diabetes dog. She talked aobut how Riff helps her. He also alerts her when her blood sugar is too high. I saw many Yellow labs and very few Golden Retrievers and maybe 20 German Shepherds. My first choice for a Guide dog is a G.S., Yellow lab, black alb, GR and then poodle last. Yes, theya re using standar Poodles. I saw mixed breed poodles today that are Guide Dogs called "Laboodles"they are very helpful for those that are hearing impaired. the convention was FRI, Sat and tomorrow. But I jsut chose today. After dinenr they were having a formal blessing of the Dogs. tonight after that was karoeke at a bar across the street but we aren't attending. I need restful sleep tonight because we ahve big race day ahead tomorrow in Salem.

the 2 girls on the end in the pictures are puppy raisers. Very special people. I got to try out a dog and walked around the block with it holding the ahrness and leash. it was fun. Getting in some rpactice for my Real life experience.

Feeling fine!!!

Friday, June 26, 2009

I am feeling fine today. Just a very slight cough is all now. thank you for all your good wishes when I was down in the dumps and feeling lousy with fever. I'm back to my old feisty self again. (Don't know if this is good or bad) LOL

We got our new team shirts last night. Rather than wearing our beloved yellows we willbe wearing black with yellow trim on the sides and Pring on front and back. Everyone on the team seems to like them.

When I got off the boat last night soaking wet and shaking there was keith to meet me when i walked up the gangplank. He is from Leader Dogs in Michigan. He helped train a friend Bonnie a few months back to get a standard sized poodle. He brought her a new ahrness and leash that her dog managed to break. this coul be the purpose of his trip along with interviewing me. I've never seen such a large poodle before. Her dog Phoebe is as alrge as a German shepherd. Well after I changed into dry clothes we met in the warm lounge by the fireplace. Yes, imagine me warmin up to the fireplace in June... Yesterday was in the 40's here cloudy but no rain. We sat and talked aobut an hour. he got to know me and vice versa. He asked me questions, I asked him questions and Keith announced I have been approved and accepted to receive training for a Leader dog. It is a Guide dog. But I can later ahve it trained for other things. I believe I will either be getting a golden Retreiver or a Yellow or black lab. I am excited. Although he told me in the end there are 250 people on the list before me and approximately a years wait I willb e called. I ahve to work on some things in the meantime. Crossing streets and Walking alone in downtown Portland. No problem there. I am one with patience. I believe good things come to those who wait.

Hope you all ahve a lovely Friday!

The smallest good deed is better than the grandest good intention.

I'm so glad you got approved to get one of those absolutely incredible companions to be at your side and guide you and to love. Those dogs are just fabulous. It is sad that the training is so rigorous and the waiting list is so long. Although, last I heard, someone told me they had a 3 year wait. UG! God Bless the wonderful people who train these dogs.
