My Weight Gain Was NOT All Me!

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

To all,

It has been awhile since I last posted. My apologies. I had every intention of keeping up with Sparkpeople - the food logs, the exercise logs, and the blogs. But, with every step forward I made towards my goals - my body made 2 steps backwards.

And, in all honesty - I just gave up.

I threw up my hands and told the sky - I am done.

That was until July 2013 when I finally met with a doctor who listened to me, ordered the right tests, and did not start my diagnosis with eating less and exercising more.

My "marching orders" are quite hilarious right now:

1. Eat what I want - just make sure to combine protein with carb. Don't track calories too much.
2. Limit exercise - if you are tired after exercising - just stop doing it.
3. Sleep as much as possible.
4. And, the list goes on.

If you look at this list, it runs counter to what I have ever been told. However, this doctor who is licensed in modern medicine is also trained in natural and wholistic medicine. I will give you another example of the difference:

1. My blood test came back with some interesting results: borderline blood sugar issues; thyroid hormone too high; etc.
2. My regular doctor began talking about surgery for the thyroid and sent me to a cardiologist to see if I had heart problems.

The wholistic doctor - re-tested and found several things that are COMMON to women my age and of my genetic predisposition AND figured out that most of my issues centered around:

1. Thyroid was asleep.
2. Sex hormones non-existent.
3. Adrenals were failing.

What does that look like...

1. Zombie-feeling
2. Sleep when you don't need to - can't sleep when you should.
3. Tremendous weight gain
4. Weight gain when exercising
5. Brain fog
6. Memory loss
7. Depression (mild - to - severe)
8. Etc.

So, I am now embarking on this journey of TRUE HEALTH. Taking a natural dessicated thyroid medicine - taking bio-identical sex hormones - and, cortisol stimulating drops.

How do I feel - MUCH BETTER!

Everyday, I wake up refreshed. Weight is slowly coming off. I can think again. I can work again. I can sleep again!

I am blessed.

I'm so glad that you found a doctor who identified the real problem. So many of us suffer from adrenal fatigue without knowing it. (Me, too!) Hopefully one day traditional medicine will recognize that this is a common illness, especially for women of our age range.

Good luck on your journey!

I am going to turn out fine!

Monday, January 14, 2013

Listening to Andy Grammer's "Keep Your Head Up" as my girls relax this afternoon.

I am going to turn out just fine...keep my head up...let my hair down!

Yep! Just keep at it.

My Journey's Unplanned First Step

emoticon LESSON #1:
Listen to your body.
Defend what your body tells you to everyone - including the doctor.
Get good medical care.

2011 was a tough year for me.

I started off in great stride for health - losing 20 pounds and getting off BP meds.
Around March, I started walk/run routines and was doing great. I joined Sparkpeople then and started tracking my food and exercise.

However, I started feeling lousy around April and went to the doctor. I wasn't losing weight - in fact, I was gaining as well. I had to be very persistent. I knew something was wrong. I finally found a doctor that would listen to me and not excuse my symptoms as "being overweight," or "going through the change," or "you just need some meds!" Through many visits and Sparkpeople print-outs, the doctors found out that I had polyps and needed surgery immediately.

I thank Sparkpeople for helping me KNOW that something was wrong!

I was in bed for about a week in April recovering.

Around mid-May, I started back on my routine. "Second time is the charm!" I thought - with 10 pounds gained back from the sedentary lifestyle and recovery. In July, I became very sick again with severe cramps - very, very sick. Found out through an emergency room visit, that I had a LARGE ovarian cyst burst and it had leaked into my abdominal cavity causing infection.

Upon further investigation, the doctors became worried that I had cancer.

With an exploratory surgery, they found that my uterus was 5 times the normal size with intensive adenomyosis (blood in the muscle) and my ovaries were infected. The only option, at that time (I will talk about other options I have since found out later!) I had a full hysterectomy. I was recovering for about a week with no physical labor for 3-6 months. I was given the go ahead on exercise and dieting in March. I struggled on my own for about 2 months.

Now, I am here.

I am really needing Sparkpeople so that I can be the woman I can be - and, I am looking forward to the fellowship and health improvements.

Good for you to keep going back. We sometimes know our body better than the doctors.

Sometimes when health incidents happen it slows us down. The idea is what you have. Your not giving up. Keep up the good work and always keep trying. Ask Jesus to help you with it as well. It will be amazing how He will help you.

Hot Flashes and Running

Friday, July 06, 2012

You know that you are in your forties ladies when you are enjoying your run for the morning - on an unusually cool Georgia morning at that - and, your body decides to bless you with hot flashes. For a moment - I felt like a crazy person forcing my body to sweat through running AND sweating without any effort. Almost like being in a crockpot with the lid tightly closed...

I will say though that exercising has really diminished hot flashes for me. Don't hardly experience them anymore. But, when I do - my goodness... emoticon

Well - gotta love getting older!
