Fanfare For the Purple Toes

Sunday, December 09, 2007

My old Asics HAD to go...! The plastic was wearing through the heel and blistering my heel. I had looked around extensively but couldn't find a replacement until recently. Great! My wife said, we can wrap 'em for under the tree.

Okay, but still had to replace the treadmill Asics, so threw those and used what had been my everyday Asics.

Don't know if it was the different sneakers or my starting to jog more during my treadmill workout as I'm creeping up past the 4.0 into the 4.5 mph range, but...!

After yesterday's workout I found three of my toenails all bruised and purple! Yeeesh!

They were hurting throughout the day and I was dreading the possibility of being "grounded" from the 'mill for a bit.

But I felt better this morning, put on my BRAND NEW sneakers...no not Asics....lol! And I felt pretty good on the mill!

What should my mp3 player pop up in the shuffle but Emerson Lake and Palmer's rocked out version of Aaron Copeland's Fanfare For the Common Man. Well, this was CLEARLY a JOGGING, not a WALKING song... :-) Whew...! That was a mighty long TEN minutes...! But it felt so good to be moving again and NOT grounded...purple toes and all!

Keep it going people, one step at a time...we're all gonna get there!

Hey Don, It looks like your theory of one step at a time is really working great. We will keep this journey going. Skeeter

Boy, take care of your feet on that treadmill. Make sure the shoes don't rub your toes anymore. I gave up the treadmill and now between a painful hip and knee that won't bend much again I am not doing any kind of exercise other than walking from barn out to feed horses.

Holiday Revelations

Friday, December 07, 2007

It has been about a year since I decided to make a serious commitment to a healthier lifestyle and begin to give up all these pounds once and for all.

Last December 2006 I had become deathly ill with some gastrointestinal bug...no matter what I ate or drank it ran right through me.

I decided my body was trying to tell me: "ENOUGH!" And for once I listened.

To recover from the bug, without yet knowing the miraculous qualities of water, I decided that I would flush it out with nothing but water for several days.

When I decided my body would tolerate it, I carefully tried some food. I knew from past experience that my body reacted best to a lower carb approach in which I cut out all the sugary, baked things and ate mostly meat, cheese, cottage cheese, veggies and eggs.

The other thing I began to make a commitment toward was to increase my activity level and began walking and finally dusted off ye olde treadmill which had been gathering dust as a giant clothes hanger...lol.

Later in the spring I discovered SparkPeople and have found all the facets of this site to be the perfect elixir to enhance and amplify all of my health and wellness efforts.

The rest is history...you can see my blogs and trackers and see my progress and thoughts along the way.

I have re-discovered my body. I found out that I really DO have bones! I have reveled in the joy and power I could experience moving my body on the treadmill or sweating it out with my dumb bells, resistance bands and swiss ball. These are things I never dreamed I would see for myself in the past and it truly feels like a miracle.

I'm beginning to conceive of new endeavors which would NEVER have entered my mind in the past. Like maybe even being willing to learn how to dance! I'm finding out that I can truly enjoy not just walking but JOGGING...another miracle! :-)

I am so grateful to SparkPeople and all of the wonderful members who have given such support along the way!

I have tried to "pay it forward" and be there for others here at SparkPeople, offering support and information as much as possible.

We all have such power, when we choose to seize it, to take control of our lives, our bodies, our hearts. This is the most important philosophy I hope all who come to SparkPeople can take with them.

Keep at it folks and those miracles will keep rolling in and bring such joy to you and your loved ones.

I hope all of us will have a healthy, warm and heartfelt holiday season!

Thanksgiving Recovery

Friday, November 23, 2007

Well, I allowed myself to cut lose yesterday and am pushing myself on the treadmill to make up for it. Also right back to healthy eating today. Broke my record again on the 'mill yesterday with 87 minutes and another 61 today. Also revving up my 'millwork by switching into slow jogs here and there during favorite faster songs. It feels wonderful to be able to jog and feel GOOD instead of awful!

Have been finding watching live concert DVDs to be really helpful. When I think about quitting and the drummer is sweating it out in the middle of an awesome drum solo I say to myself, "Hey, if HE can keep beating the heck outta those drums, the LEAST I can do is stick with my 'mill till he's done!"

We'll see next Weds. at weigh-in if I can burn off enough to have avoided any gain...crossing fingers...!!

View From The 'Mill (First Snowfall)

Monday, November 19, 2007

Our first winter's snowfall has graced our countryside this morning and try as I may to wince over the cold and discomfort which the winter brings, I am entranced all over again as I get started on my treadmill in the dark and watch the sun gradually reveal lawns, tree limbs, phone wires...everything beautifully covered with the lightest, fluffiest snow.

What a delightful beginning to winter!

I'm already cranking out my favorite holiday music...new age & jazzy renditions.

As much as I don't like cold I do think the new snow is really pretty. It is so white and clean and sparkles when the sun shines on it. We had a couple very light flurries that didn't stick. But guess what????? Thanksgiving we are predicted to have snow that will cover the ground. My daughter that is coming from Florida will not like the snow much but she has only missed one Michigan winter. Time she was reintroduced to it. I think I still have two of her winter coats in the basement. Carol
