Trying to Keep Moving...!

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Over the past several days I've had this insidious creeping ENT crud getting just a bit worse each day, nagging cough, runny nose and off & on ears acting up. I remembered my ENT doc's advice to spritz some white vinegar in the ears to keep them clear, which appears to be working, but the N & T keep pestering me. Have been feeling blah & run down so some days have blown off working out.

Today, I thought I'd try the opposite: maybe if I get myself MOVING I can rev up my circulation to just blow this crud out of my system...?

So...nailed treadmill this a.m. for 35 mins., got out for a walk & talk with a client for 45 mins. and later this evening did some Nordic walking into our local downtown 30 mins. each way.

It all felt great at the time...especially being out in the glorious sunshine which ALWAYS feels like a cure-all for ANYTHING to me... :-)

But here I am tonight hacking, coughing and sneezing away...yuck! Want to clear this up so I can get out on my bike this weekend...! And the weather is SO BEAUTIFUL, just going to HAVE to keep getting outside for my sunshine fix!

Stay tuned...

As you say to me, RATS! Allergies maybe?? As always plenty of fluids to help wash the junk out. I hope whatever the gunk is is moves through soon so you can get back to enjoying Springtime. A few others have mentioned rest - not just blowing off workouts, but rest from everything. 24 hrs under the covers can do wonders emoticon for the psyche.

Just 48 hours until the weekend emoticon I hope you're back on your feet by then!!

I had a similar thing happen to me right after buying my recumbent bike. I got Bronchitis and I knew I needed to exercise to get results with SP. So I forced myself to ride the bike or walk at lunch and I would cough a lot while doing both. This is the first week I haven't had those coughing attacks. My lungs are still not up to par, but much better.

I figured you be out there in the evenings riding. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

But i do feel your pain.. had the same issue this past weekend.. and even though it was raining some.. i got out and walked(when it wasn't) and it really did help .. Hope you feel better soon!

Aw, man. Spring colds stinks. I know a few people that swear by Zicam. If you prefer all natural stuff...honey for the throat (I like it stirred into hot water with a splash of lemon) and garlic. Take a clove, chop it up into 5-6 pieces and swallow the pieces like a pill. Do this 2x/day. Sounds crazy, but it works. You can take them together if you dare (A spoonful of honey with a clove of garlic.)

Feel Better soon!

First Spin! :-)

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Hustled home to get about an hour out & about on my new wheels before it just got too dark to be safe on the road.

I was a little wobbly as it was my first ride of the season, but how it felt so FINE whizzing along on my Tricross! Lot's of gears for easy climbing of the hills, lightweight body that's so responsive!

Coincidentally I get my bike as Google Maps comes out with a new feature: you can route your bike trip from point A to B and it will select the most bike-friendly route for you!

Here's more about it: www.treehugger.com/files/2010/03/woo

Hey, only three days of biking will get me to my relatives in Michigan! Four days to other folks in Georgia!

I can dream, can't I...? :-)

Looks like our extraordinary run of outstanding weather is coming to a halt this weekend...but it's only rain...at least the warmth will still be sticking around!

Have a SPARKIN' weekend everyone!

Triple Cardio Day!

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Nailed three bouts of cardio today...don't know if I've EVER done that before...woo HOO! :-)

Treadmill 1st thing...3 miles @ 5-6 mph for 35 mins.

Lunch? Colleagues were heading out to the park for a walk...sure! I'll join you! Grab the Nordic poles and I'm OFF for another brisk walk for around 30 mins.

Tonight? Some down time in between sessions...grab the Nordic poles for ANOTHER 30 mins. of fast walking.

Also stopped by the bike shop to pester them again...test rode a few bikes earlier in the week. This AWESOME stretch of PERFECT weather has me so PSYCHED to hit the open road...!

...and I FINALLY chose my new bicycle and asked them to have it ready (put fenders, racks, bottle holder on) for me to pick up tomorrow night...woo hoo!

Here's a link to the bicycle:

It's truly astonishing how pricey bicycles can be! Tough to swallow that, but I figure this is a bike that will likely go the distance and last me for the rest of my biking days. The fellow at the bike shop was pleased to hear that I was willing to go with the drop-down handlebars and said that this also happened to be the same model HE owned and rode. It sounds like a versatile, durable workhorse.

Congrats on choosing and ordering a new bike!

I'm going to have to get a new bike this year, too. It's a little much to do a triathlon on my old Peugeot U-09 that I bought in high school... LOL

And you know what? Your triple-dipping inspired me to do something entirely nuts (not entirely unusual for me, but this time it's YOUR fault, hehe).

Tonight here's my workout plan:

5:30-6:30 spin with Donna
6:45-7:15 lift weights downstairs
7:30-8:30 spin with Ellen

That's 3 straight hours of exercise, from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. (I want to start working on my endurance for that triathlon.)

emoticon emoticon emoticon

Total calorie burn from exercise = 535+116+452 = 1103.

Waters Of March

Sunday, March 07, 2010

Such a DELIGHTFUL weekend this has been...! SO much sunshine, blue skies and best of all: hours and hours spent outside Nordic walking / jogging...!

I've been feeling SO inspired during my outdoor times. I thought I would share a few pics of today's walk during which the song "Waters of March" was duly conjured (here's a link to my most FAVORITE version of that song by Oscar Castro-Neves...in which he captures the playful nature of this Brasilian masterpiece by the incomparable Antonio Carlos Jobim www.youtube.com/watch?v=8g3-7M51Tns ), since I walked along some of our local rivers. Here are a few pics of our great outdoors. We may grumble about our extreme weather here in upstate New York, but we truly are blessed by beautiful surroundings!

I had great support from my tunes as usual...tunes like "Are You Gonna Go My Way" by Lenny Kravitz and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Creedence Clearwater Revival...their rendition reminds me of my old high school rock band days when we'd play the school dances and have a blast!

Hey, late again...everyone have a super week! I know mine will be SO much better for having gotten my double dose of the outdoors this weekend! :-)

I'm so glad I live in upstate New York! (Although it would be nice if they could get the budget figured out, and I'm getting a bit tired of the Albany scandals, and taxes are kind of high... - but that's NY as a whole, not just upstate.)

What lovely photos!!! Thanks for generously sharing the riches, Don. I can fairly FEEL that delight!

I'm blown away by the Oscar Castro-Neves' version of "Waters of March." I know well and love Antonio Calos Jobim's version of his masterpiece, but this is splendid. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFG
QtGJZto8). I hope you don't mind me adding the terrific lyrics...to add a bit more to your wonderful blog:

A stick, a stone, it's the end of the road
It's the rest of a stump, it's a little alone
It's a sliver of glass, it is life, it's the sun
It is night, it is death, it's a trap, it's a gun
The oak when it blooms, a fox in the brush
A knot in the wood, the song of a thrush
The wood of the wind, a cliff, a fall
A scratch, a lump, it is nothing at all
It's the wind blowing free, it's the end of the slope
It's a beam it's a void, it's a hunch, it's a hope
And the river bank talks of the waters of March
It's the end of the strain
The joy in your heart
The foot, the ground, the flesh and the bone
The beat of the road, a slingshot's stone
A fish, a flash, a silvery glow
A fight, a bet the fange of a bow
The bed of the well, the end of the line
The dismay in the face, it's a loss, it's a find
A spear, a spike, a point, a nail
A drip, a drop, the end of the tale
A truckload of bricks in the soft morning light
The sound of a shot in the dead of the night
A mile, a must, a thrust, a bump,
It's a girl, it's a rhyme, it's a cold, it's the mumps
The plan of the house, the body in bed
And the car that got stuck, it's the mud, it's the mud
A float, a drift, a flight, a wing
A hank, a quail, the promise of spring
And the river bank talks of the waters of March
It's the promise of life, it's the joy in your heart
A stick, a stone, it's the end of the road
It's the rest of a stump, it's a little alone
A snake, a stick, it is John, it is Joe
It's a thorn in your hand and a cut in your toe
A point, a grain, a bee, a bite
A blink, a buzzard, a sudden stroke of night
A pin, a needle, a sting a pain
A snail, a riddle, a wasp, a stain
A pass in the mountains, a horse and a mule
In the distance the shelves rode three shadows of blue
And the river talks of the waters of March
It's the promise of life in your heart
A stick, a stone, the end of the road
The rest of a stump, a lonesome road
A sliver of glass, a life, the sun
A knife, a death, the end of the run
And the river bank talks of the waters of March
It's the end of all strain, it's the joy in your heart

Great pics! I love walking by the river and water but don't get out there much now. Are those foot bridges? We have one similar to the 2nd pic here in Minneapolis but it carries auto traffic. It's much warmer now and after my move, I hope to get some outdoor walks in when weather permits. We do have one wooden bridge for foot traffic near downtown Minneapolis along the Mississippi and I keep wanting to explore that. Hopefully this spring or summer.

Thanks for the great incentive - very few would resist walking in that scenery!
