I was so pleased to find out that I was named March Community Team Member of the Month by my peers on the Community Team!

I knew something was up all day at work as I could see SOOOO many folks leaving comments on my SparkPage and sending me SparkGoodies!

This happened at such a perfect time as my Spark was sorta fizzling due to lingering aches and pains from my Cross Country Ski outing on Sat. I was disappointed in myself for not being in better shape than I was and for not being able to better master the challenge of Cross Country Skiing...even though I could see progress over last year. I see those MASTERS at the Olympics and tell myself "Hey, I want a piece of that action too!" But it's going to take more time and lessons before I truly get my legs 'neath me.

Anyhow, I let yesterday slide...the aches and pains seemed WORSE the day after for some reason...! Overslept this morning and KNEW I just HAD to get back to my treadmill tonight.

This recognition was just what I needed to re-SPARK myself!

    Well, I'm just not going to be able to catch up on all you've been up to, Don. You are just tooooo Sparky! Seriously, it's great to see you get some kudos for all you do for SP. I know that award brought some timely motivation.

And wtg on the cross country skiing! Hope the muscles have calmed down some

I'm getting back on track the next few days myself after my trip to the States. I've missed my Spark buddies!

    Congrats on you CTM of the month. I missed that. You are lucking to be able to cross country ski. I always wanted to try that but unfortunately I would have to drive up to the mountains for 2 hrs to get near any snow. I can't afford to do that anymore. In my younger days I skied locally around the Mammonth area and in the local mountains but my husband hates the snow so have only been to the mountains one time in winter in 25 yrs. 3Keep up the good work OK emoticon

    I think it's pretty common to have aches & pains after you do a new form of exercise. You're using all kinds of different muscles than you use for say - walking or stair climbing. And I'm ALWAYS more sore a day or two after intense activity!

Don't let it get ya down - it's the tiniest bump in the road my friend.

    OH MAN -- all I could talk about after seeing the first cross country skiing event was -- I WANT TO TRY CROSS COUNTRY SKIING! I think I drove my DH crazy with it. It's a sport I could see myself doing... not so much any freaking aerials or slaloming or downhill or jumping... no. But cross country... yes. :D

    Don't be disappointed with your performance on skis - you kept at it, which is the only way to improve!

With certain kinds of exercise I feel it more two days later - weight lifting, for example - so don't be surprised if you find that too!

It was an awesome weekend for me in terms of fun activities - on Sunday I got to practice my kayak rolls again...


Fortunately there are 4 more practice sessions to improve that feeble technique! LOL

And I hope the snow sticks around for a while so I can enjoy it in the state park next door...

    You so deserve it!

I think what you experienced Saturday is normal. The first days are hard on us--and I guess even for the champions. Every year, it takes me some days before being able to do long trails on my cross-country skis without any pain afterwards. Don't forget it is one of the most complete sport, and it demands a lot from our body. Be proud of you, I'm so happy for you that you finally had some snow.

You ARE so motivating and inspiring! Soak those aches and pains in a hot bath and plan when you are going to get back out there again for the cross country skiing. Like everything else, new skills take time and practice to master, but if anyone can do it, it's YOU!

Cross Country Skiing At LAST!

After getting totally DUMPED on over the past couple of days we could finally get out and do some cross country skiing!

I and a couple of folks from our neighboring Ithaca / Finger Lakes SparkTeam, CARRIE1948 & 4A-HEALTHY-BMI got together at one of our local parks, Greenwood Park, which rents skis, boots and poles.

I felt pretty shaky at first...managing to fall three times before even leaving the lodge area...! But after a while on level territory I began to get the hang of it and gain some confidence. One improvement over last year's attempt was that for good level stretch's, even with slight downhill slopes I was able to glide along and power myself entirely by gravity and pushing off with the poles. Even used that double pole technique I all those Olympic skiers used...except on a much more feeble level...lol! Last year there was no WAY I could do this!

Still have TONS to learn re: controlling the skis and the direction of the glide. I could feel my feet wandering about with ideas of their own which way they were going...didn't matter to THEM if I sprawled with my legs akimbo! :-)

After four hours of this, on top of all my snow shoveling yesterday, my arms and shoulders were definitely *feeling it!* But for all my sprawls and falls I'm holding up pretty well...!

I think the Nordic walking has been helpful, along with messing around on the balance board...and probably the MOST helpful factor being that I'm about 25 pounds LIGHTER than I was during last year's attempts! I'm beginning to think that there is enough promise to consider OWNING cross country ski equipment rather than renting...!

    Very cool! I haven't XC skied since 1985! It was when I lived in Ohio. I remember what an amazing workout it was. Downhill is a much different workout. I'm glad to hear you were able to get out there and do a little Spark Field Trip.

    A four hour workout! Yoohoo! I do those too only I don't cross country ski but walk.....for four to six hours. Lovely you can meet up with other sparkers. I envy you! No I do. I wish I would live closer by.

    Cross country skiing is one of the things that I miss the most from my winters of living in MN. Still the 60 degree winters of southern CA are not going to make me complain.

    It WAS fun!

I haven't yet added up all the calories according to my HR monitor, but it was a lot!

Goofier versions of these photos from my camera are up on the B'ton and Finger Lakes team pages...

EDIT: I added 'em up. 438 calories in 1 and 3/4 hrs of light XC skiing (according to my HR monitor, anyway!)

Snow Dancing...!

Loving my snow shoveling during our likely last blast of winter here in upstate New York! Listening to my mp3 player and buzzing back and forth over our driveway, whirling on the turnarounds...getting it done even more quickly than our neighbor with the snow blower!

Had fun with "Hot Fun In The Summertime"...like a beach party in the snow...lol! This was Manhattan Transfer's version with Chaka Khan guesting and steaming it up...nice nod to Sly Stone...which is also tucked away on ye olde mp3 player also.

Loving Spoonful's "Do You Believe In Magic" was another. One of my VERY favorite songs by Brasilian artist Ivan Lins, "She Walks This Earth" with all the energizing percussion and driving beat...WONDERFUL song!

How can one NOT dance...? :-)

Great day for being on the MOVE! An hour each for both rounds of shoveling, 35 mins. on treadmill 5 mph, 10 incline, 2.9 miles, an hour of Wii bowling while messing around with the balance board in between bowls and a 30 min. strength training with dumb bells and resistance bands.

Not bad for a grown up snow day, eh...?


ps...dreaming of yet one MORE snow day tomorrow...please...?!?!

pps...did anyone catch the Nordic Combined event...? I was EXHAUSTED just WATCHING them going it! Such a FULL BODY sport! Whew!

    Music makes any task better, doesn't it? I have a whole bunch of songs on my mp3 that can get me going, even "weird" stuff like the BackStreet Boys!     I too love my music. I was so frustrated with my low mowing last year that my husband bought me noise cancellation head phones for Christmas. I can't wait to mow the lawn. I do like to shovel, but have to take it easy because of a slight back problem that I'm going to a physical therapist to work out. I was afraid my Dance class would cause further problems, but between that and the little snow shoveling I did do I am just suffering from some sore muscles.

Your workout schedule made me exhausted thinking about. I can't wait to get to that level. My current goals are to add more exercise slowly.

    Boy, you sure had fun shoveling snow! Music can make any chore easier, can't it. I love "Do You Believe In Magic", too. Great song. Oooh, and "Rhthym is Gonna Get You" - another favorite! Both are great to perk you up.

I just can't believe human bodies can do the things they do in the Nordic combined event (or most of the other Olympic events, actually!) It just doesn't seem possible that the human body can contort itself in those ways.

Chopping Down Mountains!

This morning my mp3 player served up Jimi Hendrix' Voodoo Chile - Slight Return. While this song may not be an obvious choice for a workout tune, I realized this morning why I put it there.

No fast beat, no catchy rhythms, just RAW POWER, STRENGTH and INTENSITY that just FILLS me with SUCH an awareness of my POTENTIAL!

    I could have used those words earlier. I got off work from a long, busy day, and headed to the gym. Maybe I was tired, but I struggled while doing my treadmill, watching the clock the whole time it seemed. I got those 45 minutes done finally. I'm sure I did have to tap a little inner strength tonight! Thanks for the reminder that it's there in us. Sometimes we just have to dig a little deeper!
