Update: Tomorrow's Dr. Oz Show (Tues. 2/16)

Monday, February 15, 2010

Through a chance communication I have identified the third member of SparkPeople who was also at the Dr. Oz show along with BOTZZ and myself! Diane was featured extensively on the show and has, as her member name proclaims, lost 150 pounds, while living an active life and having SEVEN children! You can visit ILOST150POUNDS SparkPage here:

But more importantly, as she lost her weight long before joining SparkPeople last year, you can visit Diane's ongoing blogs at:

Her most recent blog highlights her experiences with the Dr. Oz show. She was featured extensively and able to share some of her tips and experiences on the show. Her latest blog even features a link to a promo clip of the show:

What an honor it is to have such a long-time weight loss champion as part of our SparkFamily! Stop by her SparkPage and give her a HIGH-FIVE for her accomplishments!

...the REST of the Story...!

Saturday, February 13, 2010

Back again with more about my NYC / Dr. Oz experience!

First of all, my "semi" big news: For a few short hours, before ever leaving for NYC I blew through 200 and weighed in at 198 the morning of SuperBowl Sunday! But then my home-made chili and a few other relatively healthy, but higher calorie foods struck! 204 the very next DAY!, 203 the next, 202 the next...so I'm going to keep working on this, but seeing my recent pictures from my travels has me feeling pretty good about my accomplishments and ONEderland doesn't have *quite* the magical lure it used to...feeling pretty good about where I'm at these days! Of course, since I DID technically break through 200 I'm STILL making plans for my bicycle upgrade...lol!

We stayed at a pretty reasonably-priced, yet well-maintained, pleasantly-staffed hotel...The Hotel @ Times Square, 46th St. near 6th Ave. Little did I know that this stretch of 46th is referred to as "Little Brazil"...some of my favorite music comes from Brazil! They offered a basic continental breakfast and discounted parking at the garage across the street...$30 / day instead of $50 (BOTH prices blew me away...lol!). Best of all it was only minutes away from Rockefeller Center and NBC studios...although it felt like a lot MORE than a few minutes sloshing our way through the wind, snow and slop!

There was a decent workout area in the basement with two treadmills (LifeFitness) a stair stepper, stationary bike (broken) and a first for me: The Power Vibe...!

VERY strange gadget...didn't stay on it for long...shakes the living daylights outta ya! Not LARGE shakes, but fine, FAST vibrations...at least my fillings managed to stay in place...lol! Kind of hard to fathom the health benefits, although I believe Coach Nicole once reviewed this and selectively vouched for it.

Managed to work in my treadmill time Tuesday night, Weds. and Thurs. keeping up my 5 mph jogs for 40-45 mins.

Food? Kept it VERY simple! Had a cooler full of veggies and healthy stuff. Ate not a SINGLE meal out about in the Big Apple...! Wanted to keep it CHEAP and HEALTHY!

On to the SHOW! Of course, no pictures were allowed inside the studios where the filming took place...have to wait for the show to air to see this. The stories, tips, strategies shared by folks were all VERY familiar and you will see much of yourselves and hear things that have very much been echoed by many here at SparkPeople. Some of the 100 have gone on to become personal trainers. Some are blogging away to help others. Helping, caring and supporting others...this was the GREATEST common denominator that I heard throughout the show!

Say what you will about Richard Simmons...roll your eyes, poke your friends over his schtick, but I was truly impressed by HIS story, his SPIRITUALITY and HIS motivation! There has been a lot of talk among those of us who have reached our goals about the challenge of maintaining. Richard has been maintaining for 40+ YEARS! I figure he may have learned a thing or two along the way...?

He spoke of an obvious motivator, that of going public and having ALL of his fans, etc. looking up to him: How could he POSSIBLY regain?!?! But then he also spoke of the tremendous BOOST he receives by having inspired so many others to go on and make wonderful changes in THEIR lives! Yes he's all hyperbole, but he truly is the REAL DEAL...! And he helped me to better understand my own motivation. Hat's off to Richard!

Trivia: His first studio was named "Slimmons," cute, eh? :-)

Dr. Oz expressed some great Pollan-isms such as his preference for food that is as least processed as possible and closest to "real" food...sentiments which ALWAYS go over well with me!

The staff of the Dr. Oz show were all very positive, pleasant, respectful. All seemed to really enjoy their work! I had to wonder about the comedian / master of ceremonies guy though...could you imagine the CHALLENGE of waking up everyday knowing you had to go into the studio and yuck it up with the crowd, keeping things all lightness and bright 5 days a week, all year long...?!?! I think I just thought of a story line for a new flix...lol!

Here are a couple of pics of me at NBC Studios:

It was a TRUE pleasure to meet up with BOTZZZ and match up our REAL selves with the VIRTUAL ones we'd known up until then...! :-)

BOTZZZ was kind enough to take a pic of me with Richard, which I'm posting, even if I DO have a goofy look...lol:

Here are a few pics of the skating rink @ Rockefeller Plaza:

A few of Times Square during our snowy night-time walk:

So I'm back home, instead of traveling on as we originally planned to visit our son in GA...too many stories of snow & formidable weather everywhere...! Scrapped those plans for a sunnier time later in the year.

Been keeping up the pace on my 'mill at home, with an hour @ 5 mph, 10 incline both yesterday and today.

Spark ON Everyone! Have a happy, healthy heart-filled weekend!

ps...bonus! My favorite mp3 player, the SanDisk Sansa® Clip MP3 Player 8GB is on sale for 50% off! Price: $79.99, Sale Price:$41.99. Of course, I'm a card-carrying member of the anything-but-iPod club...lol If you're looking for an excellent, really handy mp3 player, I love mine!:

Oh yeah, and gotta say....I am soooooooooo jealous that you met Richard! I absolutely love him, have since high school..even considered saving up for his Cruise to Lose just to meet him (but it's so much more expensive than just the regular Carnival cruise! don't know if I can justify that one). Anyway, my eyes about popped out of my head when I saw your pic with him. emoticon hahaha

What a fantastic adventure! Richard Simmons had a positive effect on me when I was a teenager because of his positive attitude! I was thin then though pudgy and on diets a few times a child. He kind of gave me hope! Kind of like you do, Don! Keep up the great work!!! You and the others on the show are a great inspiration to those who are working towards the same goals and to those who don't think that they can do it!!!

Glad you had such a good time! Hope someone will tape the show so I can watch it sometime...

I've always kind of liked Simmons. He's consistent, if nothing else! And there clearly *is* something else 'cuz he's been going forever.

Say what you want about iPods but I'm sticking by mine - the food tracker on it saved me during that long trip to CA. The fact that it stores music is an added side bonus. LOL

And congrats on seeing 1-der-land. You'll be back there soon for good, I suspect!

Congratulations on your first taste of ONEderland, ONEderful Don! Thanks for taking us along on your trip. Wow! I agree re Richard Simmons, sensed a sincere soul way back when. I tape the Dr. Oz show daily, though only get to watch a few (pick and choose), usually during strength training exercises. Sorry it didn't get to work to visit your son; sounded like a smart idea to wait till the snow gives way to sunshine. SUPER photos. I am so glad you enjoyed yourselves so much, and appreciate your photo with Richard. That's SO cool!

Glad you could find an affordable and nice hotel in this expensive city and meet some Sparkers.
I'm very impressed that you didn't go out to eat a slice of pizza or else, especially in this city, and more impressed that you found time to exercise. Never stepped on a Power vibe, it is a bit weird to be shaked like that, isn't it?

What a great day, and awesome experience you had!

So many great positives in this blog! Awesome about dipping below that 200 lb. mark. You'll get there again I'm sure, but you look fabulous in your pics and if you feel good than you are right not to obsess about it. I am just in awe that you went into NYC and didn't feel the need to sample any pizza -- a particular weakness of mine. I'm reading my DVR how-to guide tonight so I am ready for the big day. I'm sure I'll be excited and trying to point you and Botzzz out to my DH. Keep up the inspiring 'mill work! You may not be a personal trainer, but you still inspire so many of us! And what a claim to fame - you got your pic taken with the one, the only, BOTZZZ! Oh yeah - Richard Simmons too! Lol!

Super Time Had By All!

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Just a quickie here...we had a great time today on the Dr. Oz show and despite being there from 9 until noon time there were few, if any slack moments. Dr. Oz has a comedian / ringleader kinda guy who was doing a lot of wise-cracking and giving instructions to those of us who had come for the show. There was a "special guest" who had us sweatin' to the oldies. I am HORRIBLE at those kind of things and if I made it to the camera then (please edit...snip, PLEASE!) you'll see me stepping along and putting my arms up in the air pretty much exactly OPPOSITE of everyone else...lol! The GOOD news is I didn't poke anyone's eye out! :-)

They featured some selected guests and had a tip / question section in which they randomly picked from the 100 of us to come up and share a tip and ask Dr. Oz a weight loss related question.

Sadly, yours truly garnered none of the limelight. Sadly mostly because I SO wanted to give a shoutout praising SPARKPEOPLE.COM! BUT: I DID talk it up among the others who were there...many hadn't heard of SparkPeople. I also spoke up to the staff of the show about SparkPeople indicating what an invaluable resource it has been to me. I EVEN put a plug in there to the "special guest" while another member of SparkPeople who was there was taking a picture of me with this guest. I'm hoping that somehow there "may" be a sort of "honorable mention" of SparkPeople.

Unfortunately CHRIS3215 got shut out of the show due to all transportation having been canceled out of her area...even though the snow had not yet arrived ANYWHERE! My DW is AWFULLY pleased that didn't happen to me...she wouldn't have wanted to LIVE with me then...! :-)

We're staying an additional night as everything arrived late and things are looking quite formidable out there...back home tomorrow!

Will be sharing a few pics at a later date...!

The show will be airing next Tues. Here's the note I received:

Thanks to everyone who braved the snow and blizzard conditions today to come to the show! I wanted to let everyone know we will be airing Feb 16th. Thanks again!!!! And keep up the amazing work!

Weather Stress...!

Tuesday, February 09, 2010

Does hyperventilating count as cardio...?!?

Looks like we've found a place to stay that's close enough by. We'll probably head in as soon as I get off from work today to beat the worst of the snow and will probably stay Weds. night as well while NYC digs out from under the 20+ inches they appear to be increasingly consistent in predicting...ugh!

I *KNOW* I've wanted snow for cross country skiing but somehow I *DON'T* think I'll find any rentals in NYC...lol!

Trying to chill while wrapping up paperwork today as we prepare to brave the elements tonight...keep us in your prayers for safe travel!

Too busy & stressed today to respond to all of your comments, but I can't thank everybody ENOUGH for all of your support, ideas and heartfelt wishes!

Stay tuned for the next "chapter"...!

Monday, February 08, 2010

Looks like Mother Nature is going to try and throw some monkey wrenches into my trip into NYC early Weds. a.m. in the form of some heavy snows.

I *may* need to have a Plan B in which I leave early Tues. and stay overnight as close to Rockefeller Plaza as possible.

Problem is, I am a total dunce when it comes to NYC and wouldn't have a clue as to the most reasonable, yet decent place to stay.

Any suggestions folks may have would be GREATLY appreciated! Don't want to be held up by traffic-related delays on my big day!

Many thx, in advance...!

Boy, I wish I could help you out...but I have no idea about NYC. However, try AAA or AARP if you're a member of either of those places - they might be able to help you out!

Good luck and have a great time representing SparkPeople!!

If you're a member of AAA they can help you find the best place. Another option, try to get the Dr Oz staff member to help you locate a good place to stay (as in suggest an area.)

Try Orbitz, Priceline, Kayak ... the online sites for hotel, air, and so on reservations. And as another person posted, think about staying just outside of the city & taking public transit into the city.

I have stayed at many Choice hotels when traveling for work. Just choicehotels.com - they have a wide variety of hotel/motels (sleep inn, comfort inn, clarion, rodeway, etc.)

It might be pricey, but the stress will be off to get there. Good luck & let us know how it all turns out once all the shouting is done LOL

HOLY CRAP YOU ROCKSTAR!!!!! I need to read your feed more often, well ok I need to read everyones' more often but WAY TO GO!!! NYC is amazing!!!! Taking the public transportation is a breeze so stay outside the city if you can find a better rate but also factor in the cost of travel when comparing prices may add 20-30 to your daily bill plus time to travel. Now I need to tape the show and watch! Wish I could go with you and be on the show but I could not think of a better person to represent SparkPeople than you! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

You might consider staying just outside the city and taking the train in, depending on what time you need to be at the studio. It would be much cheaper. Hopefully someone else can be of more help.
