Pausing To Measure Progress

A couple days ago I managed to bang my knee and as it was too sore I was off the treadmill. Today I couldn't tolerate yet one MORE day off my 'mill so I decided to get on, but at 4 mph rather than my usual 5+ mph. Used the same incline of 10.

Now a pretty steady constant for me and my 'millwork is that I start sweating around 15 mins. into my workout. I sweat enough to start swabbing with the towel I keep nearby and turn on the built in fan (kicking in my "afterburner"...lol) on my treadmill. I may sweat a little earlier when adjusting to a speed I've recently bumped up to.

Tonight I didn't start sweating enough to bother with the fan until I was 40 mins. into my routine! My body's so accustomed to the 5 mph effort that 4 mph doesn't have NEARLY the effect it used to! I'm sure that must be an indicator of the level of fitness to which I've risen...woo hoo!

Late, darn it...off to bed...keep SPARKING everyone! :-)

    Way to struggle through some level of exercise. I stressed my plantar in my right foot yesterday. I had to stretch it a bit today to get through the workout. And, it feels pretty good. Remember to ice it even if you don't think it will help.

    Too funny! I thought I was the only one who could time her workout by how far my sweat had spread! Like you too, if I need to ramp it up a bit, I can tell if it's effective by how much sooner I start to sweat. I always held to the etiquette when speaking about females - women perspire. However, when I work out, I SWEAT!

    Well done! I found that I really needed my rest days and that I underestimated their contribution to my health plan. Sometimes our body gives us these small injuries so that we 'rest' and recover. Good for you for listening and adjusting to your body's needs.

    Sometimes a little moderation is necessary. With my joint replacement, I need to take it easy some days. It swells up and I have to slow down. I think I may need to look back into that chair exercise team and check out some of those work outs for when I am knee sore. You are like the energizer bunny, you keep going even when you take a licking. I need to get some of that spirit. I walked today but now I am swollen. So, tomorrow, maybe I'll check back into the chair team for those off days.

Are you in the group behind Dr. Oz on his intro during the Richard Simmons segment? (the 2nd link) I never knew Simmons was a heavy kid.

4A-HEALTHY-BMI: I haven't ever heard that either. I worked for the Arthritis Foundation for about a year and they don't have any research to support that either. There is no cure for arthritis and children (even infants and toddlers) can get it. Joint replacement surgery is an option for some but some medical plans won't pay for it partly because it's fairly new and the decision-makers don't always understand the procedure nor the benefits. Arthritis and chronic pain are often seen as hypocondriac diseases or "the invisible disability" because you appear healthy. Chiropractors can see the bone spurs of arthritis on an xray but medical doctors don't recognize it.

I was lucky - my doctor said "No one can feel someone else's pain." I soak a lot - that hot bath works wonders! - and I'm always taking ibuprophen. I don't want the surgery right now but I do hear a lot of people who swear by it. Others have a long, hard recovery. Good luck with your surgery when it comes!

    Thanks for putting these up - it was fun to see you and BOTZZZ in the audience!

I have a bone to pick with the segment about the knees, however (and yes, pun intended). I have never read any evidence that damaged cartilage or arthritis can be repaired by losing weight, and my personal experience is not consistent with his claim, either. And I've read a lot on this, since my own knee was damaged at 17 and I've been living with it ever since.

The pain can be lessened and additional damage can be prevented, but there will be no repair in there. The body is not "healing itself" in this case. It's just a matter of physics - less pressure on a joint can help it hurt less. But cartilage damage and arthritis are not reversible, and will not go away or lessen.

I still cannot do any kind of impact activities without stiffness and pain afterward, although I've lost 180 lbs, have a BMI under 24, and have less than 20% body fat and massive quads from weight lifting and spinning.

I have no idea how orange wedges are supposed to illustrate "repair" of the joint, since you're never going to be able to PUT BACK the pulp inside an orange once it's damaged or gone. And that is exactly the case with a knee, as well.

He started with a NEW, DIFFERENT orange, and that's what the doctors recommend for me - a knee replacement. But not until 20 years from now...

Back again with more about my NYC / Dr. Oz experience!

First of all, my "semi" big news: For a few short hours, before ever leaving for NYC I blew through 200 and weighed in at 198 the morning of SuperBowl Sunday! But then my home-made chili and a few other relatively healthy, but higher calorie foods struck! 204 the very next DAY!, 203 the next, 202 the next...so I'm going to keep working on this, but seeing my recent pictures from my travels has me feeling pretty good about my accomplishments and ONEderland doesn't have *quite* the magical lure it used to...feeling pretty good about where I'm at these days! Of course, since I DID technically break through 200 I'm STILL making plans for my bicycle upgrade...lol!

We stayed at a pretty reasonably-priced, yet well-maintained, pleasantly-staffed hotel...The Hotel @ Times Square, 46th St. near 6th Ave. Little did I know that this stretch of 46th is referred to as "Little Brazil"...some of my favorite music comes from Brazil! They offered a basic continental breakfast and discounted parking at the garage across the street...$30 / day instead of $50 (BOTH prices blew me away...lol!). Best of all it was only minutes away from Rockefeller Center and NBC studios...although it felt like a lot MORE than a few minutes sloshing our way through the wind, snow and slop!

There was a decent workout area in the basement with two treadmills (LifeFitness) a stair stepper, stationary bike (broken) and a first for me: The Power Vibe...!


VERY strange gadget...didn't stay on it for long...shakes the living daylights outta ya! Not LARGE shakes, but fine, FAST vibrations...at least my fillings managed to stay in place...lol! Kind of hard to fathom the health benefits, although I believe Coach Nicole once reviewed this and selectively vouched for it.

Managed to work in my treadmill time Tuesday night, Weds. and Thurs. keeping up my 5 mph jogs for 40-45 mins.

Food? Kept it VERY simple! Had a cooler full of veggies and healthy stuff. Ate not a SINGLE meal out about in the Big Apple...! Wanted to keep it CHEAP and HEALTHY!

On to the SHOW! Of course, no pictures were allowed inside the studios where the filming took place...have to wait for the show to air to see this. The stories, tips, strategies shared by folks were all VERY familiar and you will see much of yourselves and hear things that have very much been echoed by many here at SparkPeople. Some of the 100 have gone on to become personal trainers. Some are blogging away to help others. Helping, caring and supporting others...this was the GREATEST common denominator that I heard throughout the show!

Say what you will about Richard Simmons...roll your eyes, poke your friends over his schtick, but I was truly impressed by HIS story, his SPIRITUALITY and HIS motivation! There has been a lot of talk among those of us who have reached our goals about the challenge of maintaining. Richard has been maintaining for 40+ YEARS! I figure he may have learned a thing or two along the way...?

He spoke of an obvious motivator, that of going public and having ALL of his fans, etc. looking up to him: How could he POSSIBLY regain?!?! But then he also spoke of the tremendous BOOST he receives by having inspired so many others to go on and make wonderful changes in THEIR lives! Yes he's all hyperbole, but he truly is the REAL DEAL...! And he helped me to better understand my own motivation. Hat's off to Richard!

Trivia: His first studio was named "Slimmons," cute, eh? :-)

Dr. Oz expressed some great Pollan-isms such as his preference for food that is as least processed as possible and closest to "real" food...sentiments which ALWAYS go over well with me!

The staff of the Dr. Oz show were all very positive, pleasant, respectful. All seemed to really enjoy their work! I had to wonder about the comedian / master of ceremonies guy though...could you imagine the CHALLENGE of waking up everyday knowing you had to go into the studio and yuck it up with the crowd, keeping things all lightness and bright 5 days a week, all year long...?!?! I think I just thought of a story line for a new flix...lol!

It was a TRUE pleasure to meet up with BOTZZZ and match up our REAL selves with the VIRTUAL ones we'd known up until then...! :-)

So I'm back home, instead of traveling on as we originally planned to visit our son in GA...too many stories of snow & formidable weather everywhere...! Scrapped those plans for a sunnier time later in the year.

Been keeping up the pace on my 'mill at home, with an hour @ 5 mph, 10 incline both yesterday and today.

Oh yeah, and gotta say....I am soooooooooo jealous that you met Richard! I absolutely love him, have since high school..even considered saving up for his Cruise to Lose just to meet him (but it's so much more expensive than just the regular Carnival cruise! don't know if I can justify that one).     What a fantastic adventure! Richard Simmons had a positive effect on me when I was a teenager because of his positive attitude! I was thin then though pudgy and on diets a few times a child. He kind of gave me hope! Kind of like you do, Don! Keep up the great work!!! You and the others on the show are a great inspiration to those who are working towards the same goals and to those who don't think that they can do it!!!

    Glad you had such a good time! Hope someone will tape the show so I can watch it sometime...

I've always kind of liked Simmons. He's consistent, if nothing else! And there clearly *is* something else 'cuz he's been going forever.

Say what you want about iPods but I'm sticking by mine - the food tracker on it saved me during that long trip to CA. The fact that it stores music is an added side bonus. LOL

And congrats on seeing 1-der-land. You'll be back there soon for good, I suspect!

    Congratulations on your first taste of ONEderland, ONEderful Don! Thanks for taking us along on your trip. Wow! I agree re Richard Simmons, sensed a sincere soul way back when. I tape the Dr. Oz show daily, though only get to watch a few (pick and choose), usually during strength training exercises. Sorry it didn't get to work to visit your son; sounded like a smart idea to wait till the snow gives way to sunshine. SUPER photos.     So many great positives in this blog! Awesome about dipping below that 200 lb. mark. You'll get there again I'm sure, but you look fabulous in your pics and if you feel good than you are right not to obsess about it. I am just in awe that you went into NYC and didn't feel the need to sample any pizza -- a particular weakness of mine. I'm reading my DVR how-to guide tonight so I am ready for the big day. I'm sure I'll be excited and trying to point you and Botzzz out to my DH. Keep up the inspiring 'mill work! You may not be a personal trainer, but you still inspire so many of us! And what a claim to fame - you got your pic taken with the one, the only, BOTZZZ! Oh yeah - Richard Simmons too! Lol!

  wonderful blog, thanks for sharing, I love Richard he is goofy acting but underneath it all is this person who knows about struggle with weight and a big heart, when I feel down i go to his books for motivation
