Revisiting Graceland

Thursday, May 21, 2009

I had such a great time on my treadmill this morning boogie-ing along to songs from Paul Simon's old "Graceland" album that I just wanted to pass it along to others... If you're looking for some great upbeat music with a south African groove that is guaranteed to move your feet, DO check it out!

Although ALL the musicians are top-notch, the bass player stands out to me with his fluid, fretless, funky, punchy lines just moving the whole band along...WOW! The newer remastered version includes a version of "Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes" in which the bass player is the ONLY musician accompanying the vocalists and it's just AMAZING!

Here's a link to the CD...also individual tracks can be downloaded as mp3 files for only 99 cents apiece:

Relay For LIFE!

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

SparkPeople is all about LIVING OUR LIFE, so how fitting is it that our local SparkPeople members rally for the American Cancer Society's RELAY FOR LIFE?!?!

I've started up our own SparkPeople Team for the Relay For Life and have our Team page with the American Cancer Society.

Here is the message I sent out to all of my contacts:

"This year, hundreds of thousands of people will hear the words "You have cancer", and there's a good chance that some of them will be people we know and love. That's why I have chosen to fight back against cancer by participating in the American Cancer Society Relay For LifeŽ. I want to invite you to join me in the fight against cancer by making a donation in support of my efforts.

Further down in this message is a link to my personal Relay For LifeŽ web page where you can make an online contribution. Every amount, no matter how small, makes a difference and provides hope. You can also sign up to join my team and learn more about Relay and how it's changing lives.

Our local SparkPeople.com team celebrates the preciousness of life and we are pleased to join the Relay For Life effort! SparkPeople.com offers a wide breadth of knowledge, tools and boundless support to assist people in living healthy and well lifestyles...all for free!

Relay For LifeŽ brings more than 3.5 million people from across the country together each year to Celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, Remember loved ones lost, and Fight Back against a disease that takes too much. This fun-filled, overnight event empowers everyone to help fight cancer by raising money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society's lifesaving mission.

Thank you in advance for your support!"

It would be thrilling if all of us folks here at SparkPeople could show a HUGE WOO HOO of SUPPORT for this wonderful cause! You can vote with your dollars at this link:

Pumped Up: Local SparkTeam Rallying...!

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

It looks like my local SparkTeam may take me up on my suggestion that we have a SparkPeople contingent joining in the fun of our local Relay For Life fundraiser for cancer.

I'm not too familiar with this event, but it appears to be a 24 hour relay in which one's Team always has someone walking...what a challenge!

I was so psyched by my Team's receptiveness I had to get in another round of treadmill time and an extra set of ST so I can sleep tonight...woo hoo!

What a great way to keep the motivation going and to spread the Spark!

No, my asking about your leg wasn't meant as a nudge - but if it functioned as one, that's just fine! Looks like it's not troubling you much today and that's a good thing.

"Don't Buy Any Food You've Ever Seen Advertised!"

Monday, May 18, 2009

Many of you are familiar with Michael Pollan. Here is a link to a recent interview with him in which he pronounces: "Don't Buy Any Food You've Ever Seen Advertised!"

Now that comment REALLY perked up my "Fight-Corporate-Control-Over-Our Bodies!)" heart! :-)

Here is a link to my former blog which has THIS rant:

Pollan is so SHARP! He gets right down to brass tacks regarding how this country can turn itself around a place the health and wellness of our citizens ABOVE the needs of multi-national corporations!

Of course SparkPeople can have a tremendous impact on our national health and wellness as well...! :-)

Check it out...let me know your thoughts!

i had the opportunity of hearing him speak a few days ago. he is really inspirational...perhaps mostly because he's so rational. his point of view, though radical in comparison to the status quo, always comes across as being temperate and well-reasoned. he's a very good speaker, too!

Love Mike Pollan. He is right on about Monsanto and the FDA.

Thanks for the links - just had time to scan the Pollan interview. It looks like a VERY good read, so I've bookmarked it.

Onward and downward!

How's the goose egg today?

Don, with my son having Cancer, and seeing the sick people at the cancer center, I've decided to eat organic foods, as I don't want all that junk in my body. I've listen to Michael Pollan before. Thanks.

I just attended a Motivational Seminar and there was a speaker there, a doctor with a degree in fitness and nutrition and he went over everything you should not eat, and he ended his speech with this very thing..
And if you think about it, it does make sense, after all what do you see on TV at night..Junk Food commercials, fast food ads, ...how often do you see Fruits and veggies advertised, or whole grains..not often enough..

I really enjoyed the seminar...

It's an intriguing concept. We penguins already live it. I don't exactly eat Mrs. Paul's Fish & Chips in the antarctic.

No, but it would be an interesting experiment to only eat foods that don't scream at us from billboards, newspapers, radio and TV.

Temporary Setback

Saturday, May 16, 2009

Well I did it to myself, so I have nobody else to blame...

While mowing today...two hours of cardio...YES! :-), I managed to hit a stone which popped out and slammed into my ankle bone. Didn't think much of it at the time other than grumble over the sting and the blood running. I was in a hurry to finish before the rain came. It even started raining, but not too hard, so managed to go for another hour or so.

Got out with DW doing some shopping for tools and supplies to finish off the replacement windows my neighbor had installed, but not finished.

Went out to dinner, but found myself progressively hobbling along...

Get home late tonight and sure enough there is a big goose egg on my ankle...ugh!

Doubt I'll be doing much treadmill or biking tomorrow...hopefully this won't derail me much beyond a day...!

Heading out tomorrow w/ my DW to see Ain't Misbehavin' with Ruben Studdard of American Idol fame...should be a good time!

Don't forget RICE - Rest Ice Compression Elevation! Then again, I'd rather be seeing Ain't Misbehavin', too!! I hope you're feeling better even as you read this. Have had many an injury from flying debris while mowing. LOL!!

We have a tractor w/a mower attachment now (we're NOT mowing 2 acres on foot!), but it still shoots out missiles!

Take care of yourself! emoticon
