One minute planks...

Thursday, February 03, 2011

...so I asked Echelle what I can do to work on my abs. She said planks. I said I hate planks, what else can I do. She said planks. I said no, really...she said planks. So I've been working on planks. I still hate them. But I did TWO one minute planks yesterday!!! The rest were all around 30 seconds. But two of them were one minute long each!!!

I know there are those out there who can do planks for minutes. But this was/is big for me. 60 seconds, not once but twice, is huge for me. And I could get up and move this morning, too...that's amazing to me! I was sure I'd be so sore! I'm aware of my muscles today, but coughing or laughing will not cause me injury. I'm getting more fit! :D

I also hate planks - they rank right up there with push ups. Great job for your accomplishment!

emoticon I don't even think I could make 30 seconds once let alone several more times. Keep pushing forward! emoticon

I do some as part of the yoga class I go to once a week. They are hard to do, maybe I should try more of them. I have been doing sit-ups for my abs.

I first encountered planks in a Bootcamp class that made me feel like I needed to throw up every week. I hated planks! But they do get easier. I can do 2 min now, only shaking at the end. I still don't like side planks. Ouch!

Update: I texted Echelle about the planks and she replied with: Great, now work on 2 minutes! :|

YES! Good for you! Mine are 45 seconds and I'm shaking and swearing at the end. Just this AM, I thought, "Why do I even do these? They hurt and they're boring."
But thanks to you, I'm re-motivated! emoticon

Can't sleep...

Wednesday, February 02, 2011

Ugh...knee's definitely getting worse! Haven't slept through the night since last Wednesday!! I have a doctor appointment on Friday. Hoping for another cortisone shot. It really helped last time.

Since I've been up since 3 AM, I'm really hoping for a snow day today...I see a nap in my future, if we have one!

new look!

Sunday, January 30, 2011

I got my hair cut! Short! Hopefully, I can reproduce this look quicker than the woman who cut/styled it. I prefer a very quick do...not something that takes a long time! We'll see how much time I can shave off hers!

Knee is starting to give me trouble again. :( Think it may be time to talk to the doctor again about another shot of cortisone. I think it did a great job for about 3 months. I was told I could have it 3-4 times a year. Phone call tomorrow.

Weight's moving downward slowly...ever so slowly...have yet to break 190 though. Hoping the change in my eating (that will start this week) will help.

What IS it with stylists giving big hair?! They all seem to do it, don't they?!

It looks GREAT! I imagine it feels good, too. I also like a quick 'do. I love the lady who cuts my hair but she always gives me "big" hair. emoticon Best of luck on the change in your eating this week. emoticon

still plugging along...

Tonight was my second Zumba class. I prepared by using icy hot, wrapping my knee and taking arthritis strength Tylenol before the class and then doing the sauna after my work out. So far, I'm ok...but the true test will be about 20 minutes after I lie down. That seems to be when it's worst, if I've overdone it. I'm really hoping I can continue, as I really like it. I'm terrible at it...not graceful or anything, but it's tons of fun.

And tonight, I felt like I had more in me, so after an hour of Zumba, I did 25 minutes on the elliptical and some lean back twists and planks. (I hate planks!) Now I'm pooped!

I'm so glad tomorrow is Friday!!!

Instead of Tennis Elbow...Zumba Knee?! :(

Friday, January 21, 2011

Yesterday was my first time doing Zumba. I absolutely loved it! It was great fun and pain-free while I was doing it. I forgot my wrap at home, so I didn't wrap it. But OMG, my knee was AWFUL all night long! Next Thursday I'm going to wrap it well beforehand, use the IcyHot stuff, and maybe take some Arthritis strength Tylenol and see how that works. If not, I'll give up the rest of my session. (I asked ahead of time if I could get a reimbursement if it bothered my knee....nope...I took a chance.)

I really hope all those precautions help, as it was SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!

Shoes definitely make a HUGE difference in Zumba!! Lots of pivoting, hopping & hip movements can really take a toll on your knees. You need to consciously control your movements & use proper form! There are dance shoes out there - I have a pair from Nike & they help a little. I also have ones from Capezio (amazon.com) but read the reviews because I had to buy 1.5 sizes higher than normal, AND they are not cushioned, but the bottoms are hard and separated (no sole in the arch) and allow you to pivot easily! Good luck. Hang in there - if you have a good instructor, Zumba is like exercise crack--love it! :)
** Also if you do any squat moves during the class, proper form is key!!
SPARKPEOPLE - add Zumba as an exercise to track in fitness!!

My knee is doing much better...I took Friday off from the gym and had a very good workout yesterday. And am pain-free today! I've got my plan for this coming Thursday and we'll see how it goes!

I do recommend Zumba for a super fun workout, for those whose knees can take it! :D

SBILLIAN~I'll investigate these sneakers! They helped your knees?

I actually bought dance sneakers for my zumba class - they're smooth in the ball of your foot (no tread there) so it's easier on your knees. My regular sneakers grabbed the floor too much on the pivots and twists. Best wishes!

Zumba is lots of fun, enjoy it. Hopefully it won't bother your knee with the precautions.
