workout buddy

I've heard for years that it's good to have an exercise partner. I've never done it. Have occasionally bumped into a friend at the gym and sort of worked out together...but never planned it. Last week, Monday through Saturday, I went to the gym with Shawna, daughter of a coworker. What I difference! I found I was more motivated to push a little harder, longer and try different things with her there! I loved it! She came over for dinner Saturday night and said knowing she had to pick me up for the gym kept her motivated and staying longer than she normally would.

So it's right what "they" say...it does work to have a workout buddy! ;)

    Years ago, I used to bicycle by myself. I would get about 500 miles in per year. The first year that I joined a bicycle club, I put on over 1500 miles! 8 years later, I put on over 5,000 miles this year!

Someone is always there, waiting for me to show up. I can't talk myself out of riding.

    I've had a walking partner for several years. On those "lazy" days she has pushed me out the door to do our daily walk. I was amazed how much more energy I had when we finished. It's also great to have someone to vent to when you've had a bad day. Glad you have someone to keep you motivated. emoticon

Every time I hit a plateau, I complain about it, worry about it, write about it...and then drop a chunk...but this is the longest plateau I've had...it's been about 6 weeks! I'm exercising all the time. Eating three healthy meals a day, no snacking, no eating past 7...even kicked up the exercise a bit...doing 6-7.5 miles a day on the elliptical. Come ON! I signed up for a Zumba class, starting on the 20th. Meeting with the trainer on the 12th...I WILL figure this out!!!

    Another of my Spark Friends is having the same problem. It has also worked for me to up the calories for a couple of days then get back with the system. I guess the body thinks, "Oh, so she isn't really going to quit eating altogether so I can back off of the starvation metabolism mode." But the most important thing is to stick with the program so you don't gain it back. Not losing anymore is certainly not as bad as the yo-yo. emoticon

    I know it sounds crazy, but it might help to increase your calories for a few days, at or just slightly past the top of your range. It has worked for me before.

Starting the year off in good health

I don't want to even THINK about how many times I've gotten sick over the Christmas break, only to go back to work in the new year feeling run down and just plain awful!

NOT THIS YEAR!!! I'm healthy. My knee is feeling good. I managed to maintain my weight through the holidays! (Would have liked to lose...but that's ok! I did not gain!) I'm starting out the new year so much better, healthier, happier than I have in a very long, long time. That can mean only good things for 2011, right?!

New gym

I've been twice to my new gym and I LOVE it! I get 2 sessions with a trainer, but can't get in to see him (Erik) until January 12th, so all the machines with computers will have to wait until then. But I can use the elliptical machines and swim until then. And take classes...all but 3 are free...and the ones I have to pay for are only $3 a class! I'm going to try spinning, zoomba, and yoga classes! I'm so excited!

They have a great pool...used it yesterday. A wonderful sauna...used it yesterday. An incredible computer program that when you log your number into the machines, it saves all your info on your account, which you can access from the internet...so you can add any activity you do outside the gym, too.

This gym is significantly more expensive than my old gym, but the old one had no pool and nothing was included in the price, so actually, when you break it down, it's really not a bad deal. (Or at least that's how I'm rationalizing my spending almost $50 a month on this new place!)

The Wii Fit was fun, but I noticed my knee was hurting again. Laid off the Wii and it began to get better...NOT a coincidence. The Wii is clearly not low impact! Oh well...I've got the swanky gym now, so I'm all good!

Wii Fit as a temporary fill in for gym membership

So my membership expired on the 15th. I sort of snook in on the 16th and took a planned day off yesterday. The sidewalks were too slippery today to do a brisk walk outside, so I pulled out the Wii Fit...I hadn't used it since before the gym membership. I managed to break a sweat on it, but certainly didn't sweat as much as I do on the elliptical. But it will do until I can join a new gym...It has to.

    I think that looks like fun. My SIL has one. I am really tired of the elliptical, but it does give me a good workout. I can't wait until it warms up and I can walk outside again.

    Have you tried the boxing game that is in the sports game package that came with the setup? That makes me sweat a lot more than the Wii Fit.
