Another Melbourne visit

My regular shuttle from Hobart to Melbourne was on again this week.

For once the flight out from Hobart left on time, and although we were delayed a bit on route we got to Melbourne only a few minutes late. Meeting up with a friend we made our way to our hotel. I was delighted when I found a small note in my room from the hotel manager providing a plate of cheese and a small bottle of port to welcome me back. Of course I don't indulge in cheese very often these days, but its the thought that counts.

Friday morning I was up with the birds to pound the tracks around Albert Park Lake. While the intention was to walk I felt so energetic that I slowly broke into a jog and did some interval training - two or three minutes of jogging followed by a couple of minutes of walking. I was surprise to get around and back to the hotel all in around 50 minutes. Over 6km - haven't travelled that far so far on foot for many a decade.

My system energised I seemed to breeze through the meetings before making my way back to the airport. That's when I became aware that I hadn't had a drink or eaten since breakfast. Fortunately, there was lots of healthy choices in the club lounge so a couple of bottles of water and a ham and salad snack set me up for the return flight leg.

Again everything was running on time, amazing for a Friday. We boarded, pushed back from the gate and were out on the apron when the engines suddenly powered down. My heart sank some system was malfunctioning. Eventually we were pushed back to the gate and the engineers came on board. After some fiddling powering down we were assured that everything had been fixed so back through the start up procedures. Again out we were pushed back but again the fault re-appeared. Back at the gate we were told that we would have to deplane. I groaned inwardly - this was going to be a long delay.

However, to my surprise we were soon moved to another gate and boarded a new plane. We took off only a couple of hours late - I wonder how long the flight that was moved to our previous plane was delayed?

At least it didn't interfere too badly with the start of my weekend.

    Hi Dariot! I am so very happy for you! What a great acheivement! You are doing so well my friend you must be so proud of yourself.
Sorry about the plane delay I don't think I would have liked to get on the original plane even if it had been fixed!.
Colin and I are flying to Perth at the end of the month . we board a flight here in Mildura, then tranfer in Melbourne for Perth .
It takes us most of the day to get there but it is so worth it, we will be staying at our youngest Daughter Marian-Jane Place .We are minding our two grandies whilst their parents spend 3 weeks in Europe and the UK .

Maintaining motivation

This past week has been a challenge to maintaining my program, holidays always are, but for Easter we had so many more visitors that even limiting myself to healthy foods I had a lot of trouble to record everything that I was eating and so my food tracking wavered for those days.
I found that regular reference to my collage of motivational/inspirational photos reminded me where I was going. I was surprised at how uplifting these talismen are and how strongly they motivated me to knuckle down and get back to the program. I will be interested to see how I have progressed over this week.

    I Think we would not be human if we did not digress from our course at sometime or another!!.
The secret is, we get back on to our allotted course as soon as possible.

As we celebrate Easter I was reflecting on my progress since joining the Spark.

I've been blessed with the opportunity to share what I have been achieving with many supportive people around the world in a "safe" environment where we are all trying to achieve or maintain our ideal of the weight we want to be.

I have gained so much knowledge on how to lose weight sensibly from all of the information that is contained on Spark People.

For the first time in my life (and I've done the lose weight thing a few times) I have been losing weight without feeling that I am depriving myself. Sure I've given up the amount of bread and cheese that I used to consume but I'm eating more than ever. Disciplining myself to eating small meals every few hours has meant I am always full. Disciplining myself to plan what I'm going to eat when I go to work has meant I'm not grazing on high sugar snacks or high fat snacks.
Discipling myself to drink water regularly so that I now drink at least 10 cups a day means that I don't look to down a soda, milk or beer.

When I started my change in lifestyle I wasn't confident that it would work but I knew that if I didn't take charge of my life and reverse the trend of weight gain now I wouldn't be healthy as I aged.

After 4 months I am well on the way of being fit and healthy at a BMI that I am sure next time I see him my doctor won't believe.

You must be so proud of yourself, I am so proud of you !.

We all need support and in supporting our Sparkie friends we support ourselfs because it comes back around! (Not that we do this for this reason). It is a by product!!

Sparkie Friendship's are a wonderful experience. We learn so many things about others and other lands that we would not normally do, and to be able to help and Motivate one another is a very satifying feeling, also in doing so, we Motivate ourselves.

The mirror of a reunion

Last night (Friday) I attended the reunion of my former Navy Reserve colleagues. We try to get together every 2 years but for one reason or another I have missed the last couple.
It was great to catch up with everyone, hard to believe so many have retired - somehow I keep the memory of us all being on the quarterdeck of the patrol boat be it at sea or along side scrapping and painting to keep her shipshape.
This year many of the people came from interstate - some have become grey nomads so arrived in their motorhomes.
When I got the comments from so many - you look no different I realised that most of the weight that I have put on happened in the 6 years that we hadn't seen each other. (Well to be honest the bit that really showed was in the past few year emoticon, the truth is that I have been putting weight on since about 1996 but the bulk of it was in the last few years.)
The other thing that struck me was how we all have aged - some more gracefully than others, but nevertheless we're all older. Reunions are a mirror that bring mates together but remind us that time doesn't stand still for anyone.

    Thank you for sharing these experiences. It's amazing how many of us have so much in common. I am still gainfully employed part time. Unfortunately this is because of financial needs. Still, I am sure it is good for me in many ways!
Sadly, no Waggie Tails for Prince and Bobby at my place. The Landlord will not allow it. Meanwhile my son's dog, Jasper, sends Waggie Tails while I dog & house sit for my son and his family who are visiting family in LA & San Francisco. Jasper is such a loving doggie.
Your input certainly enriches the team.

    It is wonderful to catch up with old friends and comrades. its amazing how we see others and realise that we are the same!.
I don't very often think of my age (67) but when you meet up with Freinds you have not seen for ages, it brings it home how we are aging. So good you are pleased with your weight loss keep up the good work!

A spectacular sunrise in Hobart

My morning walk today started in an half light. The sun hadn't yet risen but it was only a little cool. Prince my German Shepard was running around in front of me sniffing out all of the new scents that had been planted during the night.

Our route takes us along the eastern ridge of a hill and as we crested the ridge the first of the sun's rays kissed the ground and the warmth started to spread. The vista always inspires me, the breadth of the river in the valley and the signs of traffic starting to build up like a heart that starts pumping.

These mornings always allow me to reaffirm my goals to adopt my new healthy eating and exercising lifestyle so that I can enjoy the vista for many decades to come.
