Beautiful Hummingbird Moth

Sunday, August 19, 2012

We've had several visits from Hummingbird Moths this year. I am not sure if they are more local for Ohio but this is the only place I have ever seen them. For those who have never heard of them, or seen one before, I thought I would share a couple of pictures I took yesterday.

They are just beautiful little creatures and will let you get right next to them.

I don't think I've seen one of these around here--will have to take a closer look at out hummingbirds to make sure I'm not mixing them up. Great photos!

The first time I saw one I was glad someone was there to tell me what it was, because I couldn't figure out whether it was a bug or not! It looked like a gigantic bumblebee but hovered like a hummingbird. I've seen pictures of ones that look like crayfish with wings. Amazing critters!!

Wow! I expected hummingbird birds! I grew up in Oregon and I don't think we have these moths. Really neat! (Ah...I see where I went wrong...I read your title as "beautiful humming bird month!)

They are probably in PA also, I am not outside long enough to see any of them. Your flowers are beautiful. I have some beautiful ones around my house also. I will do some walking at home, especially tonight and do what I can to get some exercise in. Maybe tomorrow before we go to the orthodontist for DD. It is going to be a really hectic week. emoticon

Petie's New Runway !

Sunday, July 08, 2012

My oh my what we do for those we love .... and our Petie is so special to us. He will be 15 in October and has had a time with walking steps to go outside for his doggie duty so we thought we'd come up with a ramp for him .... we finished it today and he was ever so shocked when we opened the door and he started going down the ramp .... he walked so fast I wasn't able to get his picture until he started back up to go back into the house. So here is Petie's new walking path -- architecture, design and carpeting by the folks he adopted 14 years ago .....

And here he is ---- Master Pistol Pete, Alias Petie -----

And just to add another beautiful sight, I took this picture of one of many Monarchs visiting our butterfly bush this year ....

Yes, Petie deserves what you made for him. I actually have a ramp for my old doggie Leftie to get on my bed. He decided he didn't like being lifted up and when he wanted down, he tried to jump too many times. Thus a ramp.

Oh My How My Little Garden Grows !

Thursday, June 21, 2012

I've had a few requests to see the progress on my container garden and perennials for this year so thought I'd post some pictures.

Our 3 year old blueberry plants produced this year after we surrounded them with a fence and placed netting over them as the first year the rabbits ate them and the second year the birds ate the blueberries before they ripened.
emoticon

Orange mint, chocolate mint & orange mint .... fragrances are so luscious ! Use for our teas, cooking and place them as greenery in vases filled with our roses.

Cucumbers attaching to the trellis and grape plant (which now has a cage around it as the rabbits seem to like to eat the leaves of the grape plant)

Multi-colored zinnias ... blooming more every day ... so delightful !

Red bell peppers - Red zinnias - Habanero Peppers

Cherry Tomato plant -- plus we have 6 other tomato plants growing

Butterfly bush was only supposed to be a 6 footer -- it's 12 foot high right now and the butterflies and hummingbirds are having a total feast on it !!

I get a thrill every day when I water just watching in awe of how fast the garden grows !!

Happy Gardening to All !! Rocie

    Absolutely beautiful!

I have a tomato garden for the first time in over twenty-five years. We are looking forward to a bumper crop, don't you know? emoticon

When we lived in Maine, we had wild blueberries growing on our land. That was such a tasty blessing straight from our Creator God.

God bless!

We haven't had any blue berries for us this year, but the birds probably have had their fill.

Yummy. You are making my mouth water with all these fruits and vegetables. And to think, it's in a container. Great way to go. I love blueberries and the herbs for the teas sound delicious. Hope everything keeps blooming. If you lived closer, I would ask for some of that butterfly bush as it would look beautiful around our mailbox.

Wow Rocie. I am soo jealous. I'm watching our tomotoes like a hawk because they are so close to turning. It's like watching a kettle boil I swear! This is our first garden, so we really don't know what we are doing, lol. We have tomatoes that are close, tabasco peppers that are little bitty, strawberries that are blooming and squash and watermelon that the vines just get longer and longer with nothing. I guess they take a bit.

2012 Spring Container and Perennial Garden

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Spring is here and the weather got much warmer so I managed to get my container garden started. This year I planted cucumbers, red, yellow and brown bell peppers, tomatoes, habenaro peppers (for DH) and some cardinal red zinnias for a bit of color around the patio ..... Here's where we start for this year:

I just finished sprucing up the perennial garden this year ... going clockwise we have yellow mums, butterfly bush, red hibiscus, japanese maple bushes, and another yellow mum. In between in the pots are sweet potatoes, asparagus and tuber roses. We planted grapes out in the back and we have wild strawberries coming up in one of my planters -- think the birds must have brought some seeds for us!

So much fun to watch the seeds sprout and grow every day ....

Wishing happy gardening to all my Spark friends !!

Rocie

That's great. You have more room than I do. I wish I could have some of the veggies you planted.
I am already cutting lettuce and am amazed at how fast it grows back.
Used a few fresh herbs too. One of my tomato plants is blooming already. I should have bought more mature plants, but will have to wait longer for the ones I did plant.
I just put out some strawberries in baskets, they are suppose to trail and produce later this summer. Hope so I love berries.
Take care. Keep us posted on the garden progress.
