still with the blahs...

Thursday, September 09, 2010

ok, i get it, the stars are NOT aligned for me today! haha...I woke up late (well, to be honest, I hit the snooze button for 47 minutes and rolled out in the nick of time to get to work). work was crazy and I ended up staying wicked late b/c of my intern's inability to follow directions (on the plus side, I think I pawned him off on another team come May...just 8 more months...sigh). So then I'm plodding out to my car at 7pm only to discover that my darling husbunny left the lights on when he parked it this morning...which equals dead battery. I waited for him to get off work and then he and a coworker came and rescued me. Then off to the grocery store b/c we had literally NO food in the apartment and I was determined to salvage the day by at least staying in my calories (esp. since I didn't get to the gym).

So we grabbed some food and finally headed home and now John is cooking brown rice pilaf with butternut squash, shallots, chicken, lemon, & sage. The smell is ah-mazing...can't wait to taste it...I think my day may finally be turning around! Haha.

I've been seriously slacking in the workout department this week--no strength training yet, only one measly 20 minute workout...I've been pretty good with the calories, but I feel sluggish and poky. I'm hoping to get to a weights class tomorrow after work (all I have to do is get off work before 4:30) and then we're going out (I think) with some old friends (so I'll miss pilates). But it'll be fun to catch up, and I can maybe catch a pilates class on saturday...we'll see!

OK, food has arrived, so that's all you get from me tonight! Hope everyone's having a better week than I!

Heya, I thought I commented last night, but apparently not =/ sorry!

better late than never :)

I just wanted to let you know that you're working through the blahs marvelously. I know it doesn't feel like it now, but you haven't sacrificed everything to your funky mood, (while I kind of have).

Stick with it :) It's Friday and those have gotta rock :)

slow start to the week...

Wednesday, September 08, 2010

oh, yeah, I know it's Wednesday already, but I totally feel like it's the beginning of the week still--ack! I don't know what it is, but this week feels super long.

I'm off to a slow start getting back into my awesome groove, too...I skipped the gym entirely yesterday (worked super late and they were closed, and didn't have the foresight to go before work, even though I knew I might end up working too late to make it. I did go this morning before work though, so if I end up working til 10pm again, I at least got 20 minutes on the stair stepper in! Though it was only 20 minutes...I had plenty of time but just wasn't feeling it. Sigh. I think I'm in a funk. Ick.

Work has been super stressful lately too...basically last week my boss told me she expects so much more of me now that I'm back to my regular team lead job full time (even though I'm technically still 40% on the Manila project, and 25% on a new project, but whatevs...apparently 100+40+25=100% in her book)...but that's not the frustrating part...what kills me is when I ask what, specifically, she expects that I'm not doing, the only answer I get is to "follow up on stuff more". Wow, that's specific. So now I'm trying to figure out what she wants (didn't realize mind reading was part of my job description) on top of all the other things I'm doing.

This week has been only slightly better than last (probably since I haven't had a chance to talk to my boss at all), but it's still super stressful. Yesterday was awful...I seriously got home, had a beer for dinner (yes, a beer. at 11pm) and went to bed. I need to figure this out fast; I don't like how this is shaping up.

So part of my recent funk is job-related, I think, and part of it is just general funk--no good excuse! On the plus side, I hopped on the scale and I'm back down to my weight pre-roadtrip, so that made me smile!

Anyhow, I made it to the gym this morning for a bit, and if I get off work on time, I'll probably go again for a bit and get at least another 20 minutes in. And tomorrow I'm back to a regular schedule, so hopefully I can make it to my weights class and get out of this funky funk.

I HATE when people want you to do things differently but won't tell you HOW. It's super annoying. It's a part of my job roll I'm trying really hard to improve upon. You may need to just tell her, "I want to to a good job and if there is some specific area I'm lacking in, you need to tell me exactly how to improve so that I can." Someone told me that recently and a light bulb went on.

Anyway, you'll feel that groove again in no time. Just keep focusing on the positive!

snap outta that funk girl! ugh, i can totally understand how bosses can be super annoying with their non-specific requests that you're just supposed to magically understand.. grrr! i hope the rest of the week gets better!

    funky funk.... blah.

The sooner you can talk to your boss, the better it might be!

Ah, man. It seems like a few of us are in funks lately. We've just gotta pick ourselves up by the bootstraps (or the strap of your maryjanes as the case may be ;) ) and get back at it.

really? tuesday already?

Tuesday, September 07, 2010

This weekend's road trip was fantastic (I'm so not ready to be back at work already though!)

I had 3 simple goals that I used as guidelines for the weekend:

1) plan and bring healthy snacks for the drive, enough for both ways (apples, trail mix, etc.)
2) bring a water bottle and guzzle water like it's going out of style
3) control portions...nothing is off-limits except seconds and thirds.

It worked out pretty well! I ate a bit too much I'm sure, and it was uber rainy, so my hiking plans were a bit curtailed (read: not a lot of exercise), but it was nice to catch up with the fam, and I'm guessing I only gained a few pounds (I did weigh myself last night...after eating dinner, having sat in a car all day...and it was a 4 pound gain, but I'm hoping that was mostly water/food weight...I'll take a weigh in tomorrow morning, but I won't officially weigh in till next Monday--I think that's better for my sanity!)

And I'm right back on track today--healthy breakfast and lunch, apple cobbler for a snack before my workout tonight. Not sure what dinner will be, but it'll be light since I get off work at 9pm (yep, back to the wonky schedule this week--blah).

Well, I'm out of spare time now. Haha...crazy busy day today. Hope everyone had a great (healthy!?) weekend!

I am totally with you on waiting until Monday for an official weigh in. I truly think your body needs a couple of days to adjust back before you'll be able to really determine what, if any, damage was done! It doesn't sound too bad at all though, so you might have nothing to worry about!

As a complete aside - - - I love the word "wonky"!

Glad to hear your mini-vacation went well :) did you take any pics?

rules of the road!

Thursday, September 02, 2010

If you haven't heard me mention this already (what, do you live under a rock?!), I LOOOOOVE fall. And I am super excited for fall. And not just for cute clothes and shoes, but b/c fall is when I tend to travel around the most (though I could argue it's been a pretty travelly year all around!)...but more on travel in a moment, first, I have a fun thing to share!

I realized this afternoon (as I faced a longer workday than originally planned and was trying to figure out when to hit up the gym) that packing my gym bag before leaving for work in the morning has somehow become a habit. Like brushing my teeth (well, actually, more habitual than brushing my teeth...if I'm pressed for time, I'll brush my chompers when I arrive at work, but I'll delay myself the few minutes it takes to gather my workout gear with nary a second thought!) How awesome is that? I know! So at least today I didn't have to figure out the logistics of running home, getting stuff together, getting to the gym, etc...I just had to figure out when to leave work and head to the gym to have enough time to workout and still pick John up at work on time! Stellar!

Anyhow, back to fall and travel! So I'm road tripping this weekend to the middle of nowhere (ahem, Medora, North Dakota) to meet up with my parents (who I haven't seen since new year's) and hang out (if you're wondering why ND, it's a meet-in-the-middle affair). Anyhow, I decided I need to come up with a game plan to "survive" the weekend without gaining back all of my hard earned losses lately! I won't really have much control over meals, and the nearest gym is (I kid you not) 163 miles away from where we're staying, so gym is not an option (plus, I'd rather spend time with the fam than working out, so I doubt I'll do any solo workout stuff, either). The two areas I have the most trouble with when I'm traveling are snacks and portion control. So I'm suspending my goals of 30 minutes activity daily and staying in my calorie range daily and replacing them with new, behaviour-oriented goals for Fri-Mon.

Drum roll, please...and the goals are:
1) plan and bring healthy snacks for the drive, enough for both ways (apples, trail mix, etc.)
2) bring a water bottle and guzzle water like it's going out of style
3) control portions...nothing is off-limits except seconds and thirds.

That's it! 3 fairly simple goals--shouldn't be too hard to keep in mind...we're planning to stop at the co-op on our way out of town to grab fruit and sandwiches for dinner, and the rest of the weekend is about drinking water and watching my portions. I'll try to track everything, but I make no promises...I don't even know if I'll have cell service out there, so SP's mobile site may be a moot point! So as long as I stick to those 3 rules, I'll still earn stars for my calendar, and I'm back to my usual goals on Tuesday the 7th!

You're so chipper it's annoying! GOAL MET! hahaha j/k of course.

So, I read one of those popular blog posts that said that walking briskly for 30 minutes makes a big difference in your metabolism--if I know North Dakota (and I do!) there are plenty of places to roam, maybe even take a hike. Maybe the family would enjoy something like that? I'm not sure how fit they are, but surely even a slow walk to soak up the sun and enjoy each other's company shouldn't be out of the question :)

I absolutely have been loving your behaviour goals lately :) It shows how to be flexible with yourself without "letting yourself go" and that's really an important change that I've noticed for you.

Also: Kudos on packing your gym bag every morning! I've made packing my lunch a habit and feel so much better knowing what I'm eating for the day :) so great job!

I'm also disconnecting this weekend (leaving my phone at home) so I hope we both get some well deserved R&R.

See you when you get back!

august wrap-up

Wednesday, September 01, 2010

this week is starting to feel a bit hectic. I've just realized that I have 3 days til we head out for the long weekend, and I have a looong list of things to do before that happens! Ack! Not to mention getting my fitness in and keeping on track for nutrition! Eesh.

August was a surprisingly good month for me...I lost 6 pounds, dropped an entire BMI point (yay!), and I actually can see my calf muscles again! I did have some days that were out of control, but overall I did really well on my nutrition, and stellar on my workouts! I got 21 stars for nutrition, and 24 stars for fitness (out of a max of 27 stars). That means I earned 3 rewards for the month: state fair tickets, haircut & brow wax, and theater tickets!! I've already gotten the first two rewards, and I know exactly which show I'm going to for my theater tix! (Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead!)

When I first saw my stats in my spreadsheet compared to last months stats, I have to admit, I was a little annoyed that I didn't lose more weight, didn't lose more inches, etc. But thinking about it for a few minutes, I realized I did really well! I can't remember the last time I was on-target so much of a month! And overall, I feel pretty awesome about that!

September is gearing up on a hectic note, but I hope to continue my awesomeness for another month! Labor day will be a challenge for sure (I'll be hanging out with my parents, which usually involves eating too well!) and driving a lot (which usually involves eating crap), so my goals for labor day weekend are behaviour based, rather than numbers based. I haven't quite figured out what they will be, but I'll post them before I leave.

Otherwise my September goals are going to look a lot like August's...30+ minutes of activity every day, and stay in my calorie range every day. Simple. And effective!

Happy September!
