yep, that was the sound of me falling off the proverbial wagon yesterday...started out well enough, with oatmeal, raisins, and coffee for breakfast, a veggie burger for lunch (could have done without the cheese and mayo, but not a disaster really), and then...........snack food and dinner went horribly horribly awry. A bag of cheddar popcorn (1000 calories right there), followed by a bag of M&Ms (another 240 calories), and then we made pasta carbonara for dinner (bacon and cheese and egg--what's not to love?) that turned out horrible (new recipe) so after eating a 1/2 bowl of it, we ordered pizza and a brownie (though I only had one piece of pizza)...holy crap, huh?
Monday was my rest day, so no gym, on top of all that. Tonight I'm planning another run (though I think I'll stick to the treadmill and see if I get the lung-issues again if I'm not near the pool/cholirinated air...lunch is leftover veggie pizza, and for dinner, I'm going to stop at the store on the way home and snag some fish (hoping for cod, but we'll see what's fresh!) to go with a bulgur pilaf with raisins, bell peppers, and pistachios.
I think yesterday's debacle was in response to stress at work (it all went downhill when I learned I had to move a project deadline up by several days to *tomorrow*), so I think looking forward to a stress-busting run and healthy dinner will help deal with the stress today...and I'll just take it one day at a time.
This weekend cannot come soon enough.

So my goal this week is focus. Focus on what I'm doing (trying to lose a few pounds) and focus on what I know I need to do to get there (watch what I eat and hit the gym). I finally made it back to the gym this last week, with a good run (which left me sore for days!) and a yoga class and a kickboxing class (all in one day!) yesterday. So I'm finally feeling more like I'm getting back into the swing of things there (alas, I've got just a little over a week till I head out for Asia again, so I'm a little sad that it took me this long to get my butt moving after getting back from Manila). I also feel like I'm losing focus on what I'm eating. I've eaten out for every meal so far this weekend (and yes, that includes pancakes this morning), and while they haven't been horrible choices, the portions have been on the large size. Today is the winter pub crawl, so I foresee a few more restaurants/bars in my near future, but I'm sticking to 6 drinks total and one meal today, and biking between the places in 12 degrees should burn a few calories. I think, however, that if I get back before the Y closes tonight, I should hit up the cardio equipment for a half hour or so...but that might be a bit much to ask for...we'll see!
Anyhow, the point I'm rambling around is FOCUS. So this week, I shall focus on exercising daily (this means I will have to leave work on time, too!) and cutting back to smaller portions of home cooked food. Totally doable.

So I haven't run in just about 2 months. Between crazy work schedule in Manila, and crazy holiday schedule here, I didn't make time for it (which is OK, as I was really attentive to my nutrition)...however last week, I noticed the scale jumped from 225 back up to 230, so I figured something better be done before that became a trend.
Since diet alone wasn't cutting it (obviously), I hit the gym last night for a 3 mile run...it went better and worse than I expected. It took me a little over 35 minutes all told, and I made it a solid 15 minutes before I took a one-lap walking break (darn stitch in my side..argh). I ended up doing it with only 2 walking breaks total, which is stellar, considering the length of my hiatus--that had me worried! I didn't set any land speed records, but who's counting!? So that was better than expected.
The worse than expected part refers to my poor little lungs...I'm not sure if it's because A) I'm not used to running anymore and have forgotten how to breath; B) the track at the Y goes around the pool (albeit a floor above) and they have crappy ventilation and I was stuck breathing chlorinated air; or C) if running with a head cold just irritated my lungs a lot... I had the feeling that I wasn't getting really full breaths in as I was running (hence the second walk break), and once I got outside after cooling down/changing, I started coughing HARD. Like I felt like I was going to cough up a lung and could barely drive for the coughing fits. Ack. I spent the rest of the evening drinking brandied tea and coughing. Not pleasant. I'm pretty much over the cold I had, so I don't really think it's option C. My bet is A & B ganged up on me...so I'm planning to go to bodyflow and turbokick on Saturday and see if I cough up a lung after that class (since I'm highly suspect of the chlorine factor, I'm pretty optimistic that I'll survive quite nicely if there's no pool involved)...we shall see.
In other news, I've had a stellar week overall...I got back from New Years and a few extra days off (yay for 5 day weekends) to discover that I've been promoted with a pay bump (hooray!!!) and also found out that I'm going to be back in Manila from Jan. 21st thru April 30th, which is exciting (was just going to be there thru Mar. 18th, so this is a nice surpise, as I have a blast there!)
Since I'm going to be there so long, I need to figure something out for fitness, as not working out till May is not really an option, eh? I think I'm going to invest in a jump rope, focus on bodyweight strength training, and try to squeeze in running at least twice a week (even though I'm relegated to a treadmill...ack). The hitch in the plan is that I'm working a funky shift--5:30am to 3:30pm, so I have no access to the hotel gym before work, and if this trip is anything like the last, I'll be busy after work, too! So as always, the question is...when to fit it in!? I'll figure something out, as long as I've got some things I can do in my room, and supplement with a couple nights of treadmilling...
In nutrition news, I'm really liking not tracking every morsel I put in my mouth. After a few years of that, I was really worried to stop, but I figure at some point either I've learned the lessons on portion size, self control, and healthy food choices or not, so it's sink or swim and I have to trust myself. So far, so good!
That's all that's on my mind at the moment! Ciao!

So the plan is to get back on this whole exercise thing...I've had a solid week of downtime since I got back, so I'm due (and I'm starting to feel pretty antsy...who ever thought not working out would feel odd?!) Tomorrow morning I'm planning to kick things off with a bang...bodypump class at 8:10, bodyflow class at 9:15, and potentially a turbokick class after all that! Sounds ambitious, I know, but I'm not really all that tired usually after bodypump or bodyflow, so I think if I think of them as "warm ups" and don't push it too hard, I'll survive nicely (and all I have planned later is a movie, so I have lots of recovery time!)
New years is right around the corner, and I realized this week that I've fallen right back into my habit of putting work before fitness (meaning I tend to work a little too late and then end up not having time to hit the gym before I have to pick my hubby up from his work), so I think my new year's resolution (if one has to be made!) is going to be something along the lines of re-prioritizing that. I don't like making resolutions that are black and white pass/fail affairs (like "lose 10 pounds by March 1st for example), but I think working on priorities is a decent goal...and something I can do when I'm overseas again.

I made it back from my 2-month stint in Manila...landed last Thursday and am slowly getting back to the usual routine. I did (somehow!) managed to drop 5 pounds while I was gone (this while eating out for every meal and not exercising hardly at all...go figure!), so I'm trying my best to keep that momentum going!
I've got a little over a month in the states, then I head back for another 2 months in the Philippines, so I'm going to focus on watching what I eat and working out. Every time I travel abroad, I'm reminded of how ridiculously huge our portions are here (I think that's what dropped 5 pounds for me...reasonable portions!) so instead of tracking every calorie I eat (which obviously hasn't worked wonders for the last 3 years), I'm going to pay attention to how I'm feeling, eat only when I'm hungry, and eat small portions. If that means I eat 6 times a day, so be it. Exercise is a must, as well...I'm going to do a mix of running, strength training classes, and yoga...not getting too ambitious here...shooting for strength training twice a week, running thrice a week, and yoga at least once a week.
Still getting back on schedule/routine, but feeling good!
