Bear Adventure

Sunday, August 23, 2009

We spent another beautiful weekend in our mountain cabin.

But we had a little bit of an adventure as we were getting ready to leave. My DH had just stepped outside when he looked up and saw a 5 foot tall Black Bear watching him just a little way uphill. He called to me and I got our Golden Retriever, Bucky in the house and found the camera. The bear had moved further away but stood watching us for some time so Dean was able to catch some pictures.

We were in the process of packing up to go home so we started yelling and waving our hands but the bear just stayed where he was watching us. My DH got out his rifle and shot a few times away from the bear to scare him and he finally ran away. As we finished packing we found that the bear had gotten into our storage shed and opened a bag of dog food. I guess he was hoping we'd leave and he could go back to the food. We cleaned everything up and put the dog food into pastic canisters and stored it in the house. I wonder if the dog food will still be there when we go back next week.......

I can't believe you thought to grab your camera. You must be used to bears in your area. I would not have gone out again to snap a picture.

We have black bear here where I live. I have seen them within a 1/4 mile of my house. They only bother if you leave food where they can get it.
Beautiful cabin, and nice pictures.

The bear came too close for me. Hope he doesn't get upset because you took the food away but maybe he won't come back because the diner is closed. Great pictures.

What an adventure! If you handle this you can do anything! Woo Hoo!

I'm 'bear'ly able to breath reading about your story! Bears are fattening up for the winter, so they are roaming in unusual places! Great Pictures by your DH, BTW... really cool to see how big the furry buddy was!

Party Eating

Friday, August 21, 2009

I feel pretty proud! I went to an after work cocktail party at a friend's. She is a gourmet cook and really puts on a spread - both food and alcoholic beverages. I decided I would plan my strategy, so I called her and asked what she was having. I then plotted 4 oz chicken and 4 oz shrimp for her grilled kabobs. I put down 4 oz of red wine and during the party I made myself 2 wine spritzers each containing only 2 oz wine and some sparkling water. I had half a turkey on wheat sandwich and a green salad before leaving. I had 12 glasses of water also during the day. I was a the party for 3 hours and stuck with my plan. I was aware that I was not eating constantly but I had a great time at the party and didn't feel deprived. My goal is to eat like that consistently w/o making a big deal of it and to realize I don't have to treat myself with food to have a good time.

I think you handled that wonderfully. You made a plan and stuck to it and still had a great time. It just shows everyone what they can do and still stay forused on their goal. Congratulations.

Fail to plan and you plan to fail -- but you planned to succeed! And you succeeded!!! That whole idea that celebration = eating is one I have to haul myself up on over and over again . . . Did you actually enter your pre-planned foods in your nutrition counter before the party started?

Congrats to you.

Walking the Dog

Thursday, August 20, 2009

I've been doing some heavy duty plateau bustin' exercises lately so I think I'll take it easy this morning. As soon as it gets light I think I'll take my golden, Bucky for a walk thru the park. Near the house we have a greenway with beautiful trees and natural grasses that runs about 1 mile next to a stream. When I take a morning walk there I always feel calm and happy. My 2 year old dog just runs along with his tail wagging happy and excited about every new sight, sound and smell. I can't help smiling when I look at him. Everyone I meet seems happy and friendly and if they have a dog with them I can be sure of a pleasant conversation as our 2 four legged friends get to know one another. It really is worth waking up a little early for a morning walk before work. Thank God for nature.

Nancy

How smart you are to think ahead. I think that is one of the key things we must do to be successful. You planned your strategy and stuck to it. AND you had a great time and didn't feel like you would be left out if you didn't eat and drink. I think you are amazing. emoticon emoticon emoticon

A dog is a good motivation for a walk. Should I get one? emoticon
ok....nope changed my mind. My daughter and her dog lived with us for a year and I cleaned up more than my share of doodoo. Hey, none of it was my share! Actually I love dogs but am not in a place where I want the responsibility of one full time.

It sounds like your morning will be a blessing to you and others. And congrats on all that plateau bustin exercise. I am sure it will pay off. emoticon

Gone are the Days

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Yesterday was a good day. I did my Jillian Michaels' 30 day shred level 1 before I went to work. Went to lunch with a friend I hadn't seen for a while. I pulled up the restaurant menu on the internet before I went and picked my meal ahead of time. Why don't I do that more often? I had a healthful supper with my DH who tried a SP recipe for pork with apple juice. It was ok. We went downstairs and did some cleaning in the basement guest room so we can move some of the old furniture out of it before our new furniture arrives. We took down the drapes and made an appointment to get the carpet cleaned too. Then I came upstairs and did a walking video from exercise TV. Gone are the days of sitting in front of the TV exhausted when I get home from work.

Quiet and Good Life

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

I lost another pound yesterday. That feels good. I feel good. Life is quiet right now. My DH and I went to a tile store yesterday to look at tile to redo our 3 bathrooms that have been carpeted since we built the house 11 years ago. I am looking forward to getting that done. My DD starts her new job Aug 31st. She is taking next week off for some R&R and to get her girls started on a new school year. I can't believe its that time of year already. Life is quiet and good.
