Appreciation

I just came back from a glorious fall weekend in the mountains - 4 days in Paradise in the Rockies. I feel so blessed to live where I do and have the opportunities I have. I feel double blessed that I am fit and active and getting to a healthier weight. DH and I went on a steep 2 hour walk with 2 friends and I had a blast. I couldn't have even thought about a walk like that last year at this time. I don't even remember the mountains last year at this time because I wasn't out in them. Thank you God for all that has happened in this last year to bring me to a better appreciation of this world and its blessings!

    Oh I am so envious...I still can't walk like that, but it's getting better each year. If I live long enough I might be able to. The mountains had to have been beautiful as the weather here was awesome. So glad you made it up. I wish we could have gone up to our son's. I bet the Aspens are changing colors too.

DH, DD and I went to the Botanical Gardens in Ft. Collins and that was absolutely a sight for sore eyes. God's color pallet in flowers is so beautiful. Had such a good time there and actually walked for over 2 hours.

I to am blessed to be living a healthier life now.

Changing up Routine

I'm still going to the gym daily but I don't have to go as early any more. After I work out on M W F DH and I do ST together. I shower then spend a couple of hours on job web sites. After lunch I usually bike. I do errands or read. In the afternoon I have been making one of the recipes from my cooking class. I seem to be able to keep busy!

    be careful. You will get too busy. That's kind of where I am right now and I don't see how I can cut anything back at the moment. As a matter of fact, I could use one more day a week. UGH!!!

    When hubby and I became empty nesters we thought we would have more time, wrong! When retirement hits I know I will fill my days and be as busy as ever. So great that you are staying busy and active and fulfilled!

Much More Comfortable Now

The first week of my unemployment was very uncomfortable. Yes I was ready to stop working but not right then. I had several episodes of anxiety and a little depression. It was like I felt "They don't need me. What do I do now?" But now I am resigned and more comfortable. I have found a routine at home. I thought DH and I would get in each other's way, but we are very comfortable around each other. We got a China Board where we write our plans and schedules and we each do our own thing most of the time. We come together now and then -- like we went to a weight room orientation at our gym so he can do ST with me at the gym --Woo Hoo.

I am looking around for jobs, maybe part time but I am going to be very picky and only look at things I want to do. I have a Spark Friend who works at her gym part time and that sounds like a great job!

I am definitely exercising more and have gone down 2 pounds since I lost my job! I love my cooking class and am having fun preparing interesting low fat dishes. DH loves that he is not the main cook and dishwasher now...and he loves the neat dishes.

I am not anxious about finding something else..if I do, great. If I don't then I'll retire. Life is good.

    I love retirement! I am able to do things I WANT to do and that are meaningful to me! I now wonder, How did I have time to work? Enjoy your time!

    When I was laid off several years ago, I used the time to take long walks and learned to relax and enjoy life. I have been back to work for many years and put my weight back on, but now I am working toward getting fit and hope to retire in a year of two. I have finally lost enough weight that I can get around better and enjoy life more.

Chicken a La King

Today was my first cooking class. I made chicken a la king and put it on top of spaghetti squash. Mmm mmm good. DH actually had 2 servings.

I had fun shopping for the ingredients - cumin, 4 peppercorn pepper in its own grinder, green onions, red bell peppers and lo salt lo fat cream of chicken soup. I already had the spaghetti squash which we just put spaghetti sauce on usually. My calorie count came out to 415 for the meal, 1303 for the day and my best carb, protein fat breakdown ever. (carb - 48.8 , protein - 20.6 , fat - 30.6)

    Sounds Yummy....Was that a Sparks recipe? Love Spaghetti Squash, but we didn't grow any this year, had to by it at the Farmers Market. Much prefer it picked fresh from the garden....But it's still so good for you....Never thought of putting Chicken A La King on it...just may have to try that.

First Bike Errand!

I'm 63 and I feel like a kid this morning. I just bought panniers for my bike on a kind of a whim. Well, now that I'm out of work I decided to use them. I rode 3 1/2 miles to the library and got some books. I just started riding a few months ago and have never biked on the road. I always use sidewalks or bike paths. Well, I went to the Rec Center and got a city bike map. I figured out how to get to the library on my bike and set off. I used the greenway for the first half of the trip then had to get on city streets. There were bicycle lanes on most of the streets and I didn't have any problem. I was nervous going but happy and pleased on the way back. Next trip to the grocery store! or the Rec Center or....

    We live in the country and I have been looking at a bike we have just sitting there. My dh a few yrs ago bought a couple of bikes and of course both are men's bikes. I think I am going to take the plunge! Maybe get a bigger seat though! :) I will be 56 in Nov. Kinda have this fear of falling........ Thanks for showing us that it is possible to do what ever we set our minds to!

    That is SO COOL! Panniers are near, if not at the top of my "most wanted" list...too cheap to spring for 'em yet...want to be sure I put enough $$ into them to get ones that go the distance for me.

With a little vigilance, city streets can be pretty navigable without TOO much headache...

And the feeling of FREEDOM...to know that your own legs are UP TO THE TASK! Nothing can beat it!

I wish I could get a bumper sticker for my bike: "I get better mileage than your Prius!" :-)

    Love it! I started playing tennis 4 years ago and am now a league player, A level. It is so great to love your exercise! What a fun motivating thing to do. If you keep a biking journal with the minutes biked and all the places you go on your bike, I am sure your passion will grow. If you look under sports activitys on the teams or msg boards I am sure you will find some women who will share your new passion with you. I wish there was a tennis sparksteam!...     Isn't it such a great feeling to accomplish a new task. The library would be My first adventure as I spend so much time w/them. But I applaud you for setting out, not knowing what would happen, how the traffic would be and on the "roads" for the first time. You have a big positive to celebrate.     Wow! I'm excited for you! I wish I could ride my bike on errands, but I can not handle getting back up the hill we live on or the narrow roads without bike lanes. I sometimes load my bike on the rack and take it down to the valley floor and ride from there just for fun and exercise, but not on errands. We're heading out on a 10-day road trip on Thursday and we're taking our bikes along.

I'm heading out to my seniors bowling league in a minute ... at 66, I'm one of the youngest on the league (and one of the worst bowlers). Love it though! emoticon emoticon
