Fall in the Mountains

Monday, September 13, 2010

The trees which just had a tinge of yellow last weekend have golden tops this weekend. The smell of smoke from fireplaces is in the air. We need to change our summer comforter for our winter one. The porch thermometer read 30 degrees when we went out for our morning coffee on the porch. I had to wear a jacket on my early morning hike. The hummingbirds have definitely disappeared. Ah sweet Fall!

I can picture it!! Love this little post! I am trying to catch up with everyone's life while I have been away but sure loved that this was my first one to read. We are having a very fall-like day here as well.

Well, it was fall here, too. But the past two days it's been in the 80's. In the mountains. Go figure? I will take it, though.

We've got the same things going on here except the hummingbirds are still hanging around. I keep filling the feeders thinking surely this will be the last time this season. Hubby and I are heading out on our fall trip this week. This year we're heading to northern Idaho and into Canada. Sure hope the fall weather holds until we return ... stay away for a while snow!

Hope all is going well with you! emoticon

I'm NOT ready!!! Although I love to live in Missouri and like you experience the season's changes, it just seems like such a change from summer to fall or wintr. I guess I am really looking too far ahead and instead of enjoying these fall days, dreading winter so will think and be positive and be PRESENT enjoying the things of todaY. wELL NOW TALKED MYSELF THROUGH THAT; THANKS FOR THE BLOG AND MY ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT. bRENDA

New Work Day

Thursday, September 09, 2010

I spent most of the day online looking at job postings and applying for the requisite 5 jobs a week. I applied for 5 positions because I had to but only 2 of them really appealed to me -- one as a clinical nurse specialist the other as a staff development coordinator. I'm exhausted.

I also had to go to the dentist because somehow I chipped a tooth and it needed to be repaired.

The day was beautiful so I did a little shopping and met a friend who wondered why I wasn't at work on a Thursday morning. I was ok telling her and actually am beginning to feel more comfortable with my new status.

I didn't get as much exercise in as I should last week so I was happy to swim this morning. Tomorrow I want to ride my bike.

I finally hit 189 this morning after a full month at 190. My calories have been good the whole time since I was laid off so I am proud of myself.

Onward and upward (oops, downward I mean!) emoticon

Last night, I watched FIT TV.
They had a six month training of four co-workers. 3 women & 1 man.
The women did not lose significant weight, but they lost a lot of inches and body fat. It encouraged me that when the scale doesn't move, my body is probably still improving.

Sounds like you're doing a great job of settling into your early retirement! And great job on hanging in there with your healthy lifestyle even though you didn't see results over the past month. Doing it while handling all the challenges you've had lately is AWESOME!

Busy Day

Wednesday, September 08, 2010

Got back from the cabin last night because I had appointments today. Went to the gym for a short treadmill workout and strength Training on the equipment this morning. Thank goodness the Rec Center is open...last week it was closed for yearly maintenance. DH and I went for Eye appointments this morning since our Vision Insurance runs out on 9/15/10. I needed new glasses and he needs cataract surgery... so I'm glad we went. After lunch I went and registered with Unemployment and signed up for benefits. Then we went to our Financial Adviser to see how much impact the layoff would have on our plans. Not too much, thank goodness. Lastly we had to go to the Car Repair because my trusty CRV sounded really funny coming back from the mountains last night. Turned out an engine block was cracked. Tomorrow we go to get new tires.

I have to say that so far I haven't been bored being out of work! emoticon

Yep, lots to keep you going!

My son, who is being laid off because his company is sending the accounting jobs to INDIA, just visited with the Labor Dept yesterday and found out he can get some help to finish his degree (because his job was lost due to out-sourcing). He was very pleased to have the unexpected turn of events, and I am so happy for him to finally get his degree completed. He is 27.

I know that doesn't have anything to do with you, except being laid off. But I just had to share emoticon

Settling In

Friday, September 03, 2010

This is my first day out of work. I had a very mixed day yesterday (my last day at work). I finished training my replacement--it went well. I went and said goodbye to the people I care about at work --great feelings but some sadness. Went out to lunch with 2 work friends--fun. Met with HR -- horrible, she acted like an uncaring robot.

I felt a little lost and detached when I got home. It felt weird...
I didn't sleep well and ended up drinking hot milk and taking a Tylenol PM which I don't like to do, but I did get back to sleep and ended up with a 9 hour total.
I feel anxious and full of random energy this am so I went on a fast 9 mile bike ride and feel a little better.
I am still choosing not to overeat because of my layoff and have maintained a weight of 190 thru the week.
I'm off to the cabin for an undetermined amount of time to relax and unwind.

Talk to you all when I get back!

I'm a bit late to the blog reading so I'm sorry to be slow in posting. But, I've done a little reading and see that you are in a definite transition phase. So far, it seems to me like you are doing very well. I like the idea of breathing deeply and seeing where your path leads you. I have no great idea of your likes and dislikes, aside from swimming, but you know there are tons and tons of places that need volunteers, especially in this economy. Maybe finding a place that needs you will help replace some of the feeling of being needed at work.

I wish you much success in your transition to the next phase of your life.

Think of it as your temporary, well deserved vacation, if you can. I agree w/all THESE ARE NORMAL FEELINGS!!! YOU ARE ENTITLED AND ALLOWED TO FEEL THIS WAY. EXPERIENCE THEM AND OWN THEM. THIS TOO SHALL PASS!! LOL BRENDA

I agree with Carlannie (again :) that it you weren't experiencing some "angst" (however you define it) it would be odd. DO have a GREAT time at the cabin! Remember, what we do for a living and when we choose to transition (whether our choice or not) does not need to define us.

You did well. VERY well!

ENJOY!

The Day After

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

The shock of being laid off has dissipated and today was a much better day. I am actually looking forward to having time to do some of the things I've been wanting to do. We had the 2nd part of our carpeting installed today and it looks beautiful. Just the hallway and my office left. We haven't unpacked the boxes but the house looks great. I will be having my meeting with HR on Thursday and will hopefully get some of the details about cobra and unemployment ironed out. We're going up to the mountains this weekend for some well deserved rest. My food was ok today, not perfect but ok. DH and I made a roast with veggies in the slow cooker and had fun working in the kitchen together. I'm looking forward to many more times like that.

Checking in and glad to find you are doing okay! I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason...we may not always know what that is at first, but eventually it will be clear! Enjoy your husband and the close times.

I'm really glad to hear that you are taking this so well, my heart just sank yesterday when I found out you had been laid off.

Finding the silver lining is something I'm really good at doing, so I'm glad that you found yours in the form of being able to spend more time with your husband.

I was thinking of you a lot today so I was really glad you had a good day... Your COBRA should last for at least 18 months and possibly longer depending on your situation. Feel free to email me w/ any questions or concerns you may have about it...or even if you just need an ear or a shoulder!
