Practice Walking

Friday, April 09, 2010

DH and I went on another 5k route today! Improved my time by 5 min to 55 minutes. emoticon

We took Bucky. He made things interesting. I'd be walking at a brisk pace and wham....There was Bucky right in my path. At least I got to exercise my flexibility of movement.

The sun was shining and there was a soft breeze and the beautiful Front Range Mountains were snowcapped and glistening. What a day...What a life...Now ... off to the Mountains.

Doctor's Verdict

Thursday, April 08, 2010

I was really pleased with my Sports Rehab Evaluation. It was the first neuro assessment I have had since a year after my back surgery and the sensation and movement in my left leg have improved tremendously. I even had a bit of a knee jerk response on the left. As far as my progress and physical shape, she was really impressed and said I had come a long way and to keep it up. It was a real boost to my ego. She said I can keep up most of the physical activity I am doing, even the jogging IF I enjoy it. She said only to do it if I really liked it. I only got no's on Skiing, Skating, Horseback riding and any high risk of falling activities like sky diving emoticon

She said "go for it" If you hurt or have problems stop. She did say to be careful of activities involving balance because my left side is weak. She was totally approving of walking and even jogging a little of the 5K.

She said that studies have not shown a detrimental effect on osteoarthritis or degenerative disk disease from jogging!

Congrats! Don't worry about the limitations, concentrate on what you CAN do. Besides, who wants to jump out of a perfectly good airplane?

emoticon Daisy!! This is a great report. That knee-jerk response sounds a bit like me, I have some on the right. It is great to be cleared for activity, but you have to start our slowly and carefully. Recuperating from back surgery seems to be a lifetime proposition some days. Thanks for sharing, I love it when my firends have good news like this, you have worked hard to get here. emoticon emoticon emoticon

How Much is Too Much?...Inquiring Minds Want to Know!

Wednesday, April 07, 2010

I've been slowly upgrading my workouts and fitness routines and feel great doing it, but my husband broke his wrist while we were skating, I had a bad fall on my back and head skiing, and I got tendonitis after adding small intervals of jogging to my walking routine. I can't decide whether at almost 63 and with osteoarthritis and spinal fusion I should continue and push thru or if I should back off and use longer periods of more moderate exercise. So, I made an appointment with a Sports and Rehab MD for tomorrow and will see what she recommends.

And I'm with you on the activity thing. I feel so much better when I'm up and moving around.

I know the more I move the better I feel. Yesterday, with all the walking & shopping I got in 11,000 steps! A lot for me. My ankles are swollen today! I have not taken a walk yet as I have been working in the garden.

Walking Briskly

Monday, April 05, 2010

I've been having some trouble with tendonitis in my right knee. It started after I began adding jogging to my walks. I don't know if the jogging caused it because my knee didn't hurt during the jogging or right after. I just woke up one morning with knee pain. The pain is behind my knee so I thought I might have a Baker's cyst, but the MD said it was tendonitis. I've curtailed my jogging - just walking this last week - and have been icing and stretching my right leg. It is slowly getting better, but I am going to be very careful with it. I think I tried to increase the jogging too fast so I am going to take it easy on the jogging for now. But I can sure work on walking briskly.

I can't jog either darn it. But brisk walking is probably better for your knees anyway. Not as much pounding. I also had a problem when I tried to do it and was kinda out of commission for a couple weeks. Keep stretching those muscles all around it. And remember: We are better but we still are older than we think. emoticon

I hope you mend quickly, and mend well. I went for a brisk walk on Thursday, 8.1 miles; and it left me with blisters on my feet and some other problems. I was unable to do any cardio, other than a leisure walk over the weekend. I didn't feel bad while walking, it all hit me later that day though. Sooo... I know how you feel. Take your time to mend. You'll be back at it before you know it. God bless.

I agree listen to your body. This is one reason I don't jog at all. I suffered from knee arthritis until I got healthy (PRAISE GOD!) and never do now so I don't do anything that might cause a problem to my walking and exercise!

Please rest and take it easy, I didn't and I have been done a year with Achilles tendinitis. Our bodies talk to us - we just have to listen. I hope you heal quickly.
