I've been slowly upgrading my workouts and fitness routines and feel great doing it, but my husband broke his wrist while we were skating, I had a bad fall on my back and head skiing, and I got tendonitis after adding small intervals of jogging to my walking routine. I can't decide whether at almost 63 and with osteoarthritis and spinal fusion I should continue and push thru or if I should back off and use longer periods of more moderate exercise. So, I made an appointment with a Sports and Rehab MD for tomorrow and will see what she recommends.
I just got back from swimming. Boy does that make me feel good. I hope I never get out of the habit of being active. It has made my life so much more interesting, fun, and easier. Thank you Spark for getting me into exercise and activity.
I've been having some trouble with tendonitis in my right knee. It started after I began adding jogging to my walks. I don't know if the jogging caused it because my knee didn't hurt during the jogging or right after. I just woke up one morning with knee pain. The pain is behind my knee so I thought I might have a Baker's cyst, but the MD said it was tendonitis. I've curtailed my jogging - just walking this last week - and have been icing and stretching my right leg. It is slowly getting better, but I am going to be very careful with it. I think I tried to increase the jogging too fast so I am going to take it easy on the jogging for now. But I can sure work on walking briskly.
My DH and I walked the 5k route at an easy pace on Friday morning just to get a baseline. I didn't want to enter if I couldn't even match the longest time from last year - which was 1 hr and 7 min. We did it in 59 min. So I guess I'll enter!!!! Hopefully, I can walk the 5 k in less time than that on the day of the race.
I am really enjoying being active. I am swimming, walk/jogging, spinning, weight training and counting steps. It seems like every morning when I wake up the first thing I think of doing is starting some activity. I just can't believe how much I am enjoying exercise. Yesterday I met an old friend for lunch about a mile from my work place...so I walked. Today DH and I are going to drive to the location of a 5k that is being held in our town at the end of April and we are going to see how long it will take us to walk it (without jogging). We are planning to do a bigger 5k in July, but I just found this one and want to try it. It is a very level scenic walk and sounds like fun. I'll let you know in my next blog.
Last night I went to my beginning Master's class. We had a different instructor and I really loved it. She taught me 2 new things that entirely changed my stroke. I had a lot of trouble with them and never really got the hang of it, but I could feel the difference in how I moved thru the water. I had a blast...I nearly drowned, but I had a blast and burned 533 calories in an hour.
I have convinced another friend (the one I met for coffee yesterday) to come to the gym with me and we are going to a spinning class together.
I feel so blessed to have found this program and been Sparked to activity!
