The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Saturday, February 27, 2010

Good - I loved skating last night. After about 2 circuits of hanging on to the boards, I was able to skate and I really enjoyed the feeling of gliding, of mastery (well, of not falling down) and the wind in my hair. I skated for an hour straight and my HRM said I burned 900 calories. I enjoyed skating, but I worked like a dog.

Bad - My DH was not as comfortable on the ice and really didn't enjoy himself.

Ugly - He fell, landed on his hand and broke the end of radius (one of the long bones in the lower arm) into several pieces. He has a "comminuted compound intra articular distal radius fracture with dorsal angulation" and is going to need surgery for it. He won't be able to ski when the DGDs come in the middle of March.

OUCH!!! Poor DH!! I hope the surgery & healing go well. (& btw, that's why you couldn't get me on a pair of skates for love or money -- I'd break several somethings within 5 minutes!)

OH MY! I'm so sorry your husband was injured and so severely. The last time my husband and I played softball with all our kids and their friends (we would get a little silly) he broke his collarbone. Surgery sounds a lot worse.

I was wondering, prior to reading the BAD part, if you were working to be a new olympic hopeful? Smile. You and your hubby will be in my prayers.

Oh no, I was really enjoying this blog until I got to the part about your husband. I am so sorry. Wow that fracture is a mouthful, will keep him in my prayers. Tell him I tripped in the air and broke my ankle a few years ago, at least he was doing something. Great calorie burn on your part, that was definitely good!

The ugly sounds very ugly. I am sorry to hear that. I am sure your DH is very bummed. I bet he gets a lot of attention from the girls though, not that its a consolation. I will be praying for a quick healing.

And you go girl on those skates. You look good.

Thank God for Family!

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Yesterday we got to see our son for several hours after work. He lives in Denver and we don't see him a lot so it was great. Tonight I got home to a voicemail message from my 13 yo DGD saying she had something neat to tell me. When I called her back, she told me she tried out for track and made it and she is so excited! I am really happy my DD has shown her kids such a good example of a healthy active lifestyle. I wish I had gotten active earlier. BTW our DS told us he had joined a gym and is working out too! Wow!

We aren't going to the cabin this weekend because my workplace is holding a family skate night at our outdoor rink and DH and I are going to go and see if we can still stand up on skates before we take our DGDs skating when they come out in March. Saturday, DH is going to another Rotary function in Denver so it just isn't worth going up to the cabin for just one day.

I'm just happy and especially happy about the relationship we have with our kids and grandkids.

Family is so important in this day and age. Just have them taken away from you through no control of your own and you will know. I am so happy for you Nancy that you are having a wonderful weekend. Good luck on those skates. emoticon

Spring Skiing

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

I am so excited! My 2 DGDs (ages 11 and 13) are going to spend their spring break with us. We are going to go skiing and ice skating. They have been all fired up about the Olympics and wanted to go skiing. I though of adding the ice skating. Our outdoor rink closes the day they arrive so we'll have to go to an indoor rink but I know we'll have fun!

Here's a picture of the girls while they were spending a week at the cabin last summer.

Well, I was going to add a picture, but the function isn't working on Spark. You'll just have to imagine the cutest little 13 year old and 11 year old girls you can!!!

I tried again and was successful!

Looks as if the picture worked... I'm so happy for you and a tad envious. I miss mine when they were younger and used to come to our cabin. Now they're college and career bound...Time goes so fast so enjoy. Those girls are beautiful, and having such a fun time at Grandma's.

Shriner's Pancake Breakfast for Supper at I Hop

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

IHOP had a national pancake day to benefit Shriner's hospitals today so DH and I had an early supper. I had 3 buttermilk pancakes, sugar free syrup, marg, egg beaters senior omelet with pepper, onion, and mushrooms. MMM mmm good! Supper was 750 calories but I stayed under my 1600 for the day! emoticon

Its nice to be able to enjoy food without guilt, knowing that I am staying within my guidelines and making the best choices under the circumstances. Food should be fun...not deprivation.

Ready for a Walk

Monday, February 22, 2010

We had a cold lazy weekend by the fire. I am ready for a little less snow and a little more warmth. I haven't been able to walk outside for over a week because of all the ice on the ground. I've fallen twice so I stopped trying to do it. I walk on the treadmill, with Leslie and around the halls at work but the mood boost just isn't the same as walking outside. I'm glad my DH walks our dog daily because Bucky really loves his walks.

I know what you mean. I miss my outside walks too. It has been months since I have been out to walk. Better safe inside though, at least until Spring is here or the ice/snow melts.

You are a better woman than I am. I haven't been outside walking since the weather got so cold. I do all my walking at the gym on the treadmill or elliptical. I have to say that I can't wait til the weather breaks and I can go outside again. Keep up your spirits and "Walk power walk, walk power walk". emoticon

Walking is important but staying safe is equally as important. Falling doesn't help our backs!!!!! So walk inside till that ice is gone.
No walking for me today, it's pouring rain outside. But that's better than snow, at least I don't have to shovel it. emoticon

Take it easy my friend. We don't want you to hurt yourself. I totally understand about the energy level from inside exercising to the out of doors exercising. It will get better soon....so hang in there!!

Just read someone else's blog about walking outside on ice with shoes made in Sweden called Icebugs... I googled them, they have retractable studs on the bottom and sound like they will get you outside! I would rather workout outside, but it just has been nasty here too....sigh....
