Consistency and Moderation Make my Day!

Monday, December 07, 2009

I guess you do burn more calories in the cold because I did lose a pound last week. Yay me!
I seem to be pretty consistent at having a 500 calorie daily deficit and that leads to a pound a week weight loss which is great for me.

I think consistency and moderation are the 2 things that seem most important to me in this weight loss journey. When I read posts from successful sparkers that's what stands out to me. Not perfection, but cinsistency and moderation.

That IS what Spark is about...a change in lifetstyle. And it DOES work...thankfully for us!

I totally agree with consistency and moderation. Like the old saying goes: "Slow and steady wins the race."

You are so very right about that. It's about keeping on. If we are consistent in our pursuit it will gradually keep coming off....with a bump or two in the road to challenge us to new levels. But its all about forming that new pattern in our lives. emoticon

You Burn More Calories in the Cold. Right?

Sunday, December 06, 2009

It was cold up in the mountains this weekend. It was 22 degrees F when we arrived Friday and 2 degrees F when we left today. Brrr. Our Vermont Castings stove kept us nice and cozy in the house when it was on but it was cold in the morning when we woke up. I did go walking in the cold and snow but I was over my calories all 3 weekend days.....Darn.... But maybe I will still have lost some at my weight in tomorrow just from trying to keep warm. What do you think?

I'll let you know tomorrow.

I agree. Shivering produces calories burned. emoticon Not that we want to do that. It is cold here too. And we have snow this morning. But are expecting a big storm on Tuesday night. Not good timing for me. But then is it ever?

Random Musings

Friday, December 04, 2009

I think I am finally well! 3 weeks of feeling lousy, but I'm back on track. I'm back on my daily asthma meds after several years of thinking I didn't need them. I sure don't want to go thru that again so I will follow MDs orders this time. How come nurses are such bad patients!

I haven't been swimming for 3 weeks so I am really excited to swim today. I think I will just swim laps instead of doing my Swim Plan workout since I haven't been in the water for so long.

I have been thinking about finding a Red Hat group in town. I looked on line and can't find listings. Does anyone know how to find local groups?

I hope everyone is doing well with their holiday eating and exercising so far. This lifestyle change is such a big thing. Right now I don't crave any sweet treats but I know it would be easy to slip into old patterns. I'm reading all the holiday survival articles I can. emoticon

Have a wonderful weekend, Sparkers.

I am so glad to hear you are feeling better. Be a good patient now and do what the dr. tells you.

I am not even thinking about holiday eating yet. I guess I should so I can be prepared and it doesn't get the best of me.

Yoga Anyone?

Thursday, December 03, 2009

I've been wanting to try some yoga to see if it will help my back a little and maybe help me sleep more than 6 hours a night (or less). I had tried it a few months ago and found it a little challenging, but I thought I'd give it another try. I've sent for a beginning yoga dvd on netflix and am looking forward to trying it when it arrives. I also thought about looking at the dvd's at the library., but haven't done it yet. I looked at reviews of yoga dvd's online and just got confused so I didn't know where to go next. Well last night I checked out exercise tv and found "YogaWorks Beginners AM PM. It was kind of long - 45 min, but I really enjoyed it. It was a little fast but I'm sure it will be easier when I know what I'm doing. The best thing was to see how much more limber I am than I was when I tried a few months ago. Wow, what a difference!

What tape did you try? We had one at the gym but it seemed too hokey. A lot of downward facing dog and not much else. LOL

I found yoga hard on my back with all the bending. I love it and had done it for years. It opens you up and releases tension in the body.
Tapes at library are wonderful and we get to keep them for 3 weeks. It gives you time to see how well you like the subject of the tape.
Much success in your journey. emoticon

I never thought I would really enjoy doing yoga, I really enjoy the dancey rhythm of aerobics, I thought yoga will be too slow and I'd get impatient. Until I tried Kundalini, WOW the first session I did I couldn't believe the work out I had done and I felt brilliant afterwards, It's gives you an enormous sense of wellbeing.
Well done keep it up! emoticon

Cereal Fun

Wednesday, December 02, 2009

I'm having fun with food! Yesterday at lunch it was too cold to walk around the park so I went to the grocery store. I was looking for ground flaxseed to sprinkle on my cereal and oatmeal, but Safeway didn't have it so I went to the local natural grocer (where I never shop). Well I found the flaxseed and more! I got some steel cut oatmeal, some quinona and some Scottish porridge which my grandma used to make for me when I was growing up in Paisley, Scotland. I entered it all in my tracker today and had some steel cut oatmeal with raisins, banana, cinnamon and slivered almonds for breakfast...mmm mmm good. It gave me all the energy I needed for my 30 minute cardio session. Now I just have to do my strength training.
