Feeling good after surgery

Friday, August 13, 2010

Had surgery yesterday to have one of my parathyroid glands removed that was four times its normal size due to a tumor. That pesky little tumor was draining my bones of calcium and made me generally feel tired. Consider myself lucky that my regular doctor noticed funny things with my blood in January and started running tests and referred me to a specialist who later referred me to a surgeon. So it's gone and today I feel really good except for a sore neck and residual effects from the anesthesia. As I said in an earlier blog, I became so discouraged during all of this because losing weight seemed so impossible so I became inactive with Spark People because I was embarrassed I could not lose weight. During this lengthy process, I couldn't have anything which might have calcium (including multi-vitamins. In June when I found out I had a Vit D deficiency, I started taking that vitamin and decided to add a B complex since it didn't have calcium. I lost 8 pounds that month and since then I have lost more. Have had some good messages from Spark People since my last blog which are so helpful and motivating. Thank you! You know who you are. Just had a birthday and it feels like a rebirth. Now on to getting those pounds off and enjoying the rest of my life. And enjoying the fellowship and help found with Spark People

So glad to hear your surgery went well and that you are on the mend. Thyroid issues are the worst! I hope that now that your tumor has been removed you can start taking calcium once again. ' emoticon

Tumor on Parathyroid

Saturday, August 07, 2010

Has anyone had this and had it fixed. Would sure love to hear from you. I was getting so discouraged at not being able to lose weight even when I was being very good that I became inactive in Spark People. In January I was told I had high calcium levels and to stop consuming calcium in any form whether milk, vitamins, supplements, yogurt, etc. The levels continued to rise and I had tests almost monthly. Finally other tests made a tumor likely. In June, I was told I had a vitamin D deficiency and started taking a supplement. I decided to add a B Vitamin supplement since I wasn't taking a good daily vitamin. Amazingly, I lost 8 pounds and don't know if that had anything to do with it or not. Last month more tests confirmed a tumor (adenoma). So surgery is scheduled for this coming week and I am looking forward to getting this behind me. I have been told that I will be surprised at how much better I feel. I knew I was tired a lot of days but didn't know why. Maybe now with a healthy eating plan and exercise, I will be able to get those pounds off.

I have not had this either, but I will keep you in my prayers. I was told I had Vitamin D deficiency too so I started taking it a couple of weeks ago. Good luck to you!

Those dratted scales finally moved

Wednesday, May 06, 2009

Monday night I was feeling so discouraged I pigged out on lemon bars. Surprise, surprise, the next morning those dratted scales finally moved. And it was on the scales at my doctor's office which always weigh more than mine at home. I lost an inch in my waistline. What a shame I hadn't written down other measurements for comparison (something I am going to do today).

It was a month or seemed like a month and they wouldn't budge in spite of exercising five to six times weekly (except for an out of town trip). My exercise included weight training and cardio and I tried to stay within Spark People's calorie limits. A friend in one of my exercise classes with the same problem speculated that maybe we were gaining muscle but I was afraid that might just be making an excuse. Now I know that I probably did gain muscle and that if I am persistent, the weight loss will catch up.

While I kept trying to think positive it was hard yet I was getting some great encouragement from Spark People. You know who you are! Thanks. I am back on track!!! But I realize the scales may be stubborn again and I can't pig out on lemon bars! Lemon bars aren't even my favorite pig out food.

Thanks for the blog. I just started a month ago, and I noticed that I didn't lose anything this week. However, I did like you suggested and check my measurements - and I lost an inch! So, it is important for us to keep moving and grooving . . . the weight ticker will catch up!

And, haha - I LOVE lemon bars! But last night my treat was a square of chocolate and a few chips . . . . Live by Spark's 80-20 rule!!!!

My scales refuse to budge

Saturday, April 18, 2009

Actually they have not screamed lately when I step on them but they refuse to move downward. Very frustrating especially on those days where I am feeling very hungry because I am staying on the program. I usually snack at mid-morning and mid-afternoon on low cal or low fat items so my total calories remain within the range allowed by the nutrition tracker (calculated using my exercise program). I exceeded the range 1 day out of 7 but my eating for the week averaged well within the range.

I increased my exercise which should have taken care of any extra calories for that one day. On Mon, Wed and Fri, I worked out for an hour. On Tue and Thur, I did 30 minutes cardio and 30 minutes strength training.

Still there was no move on the weight during the last week or even two weeks.
I am trying very hard to stay positive and realize that these things take time but I am one of those people who need to understand the WHYS. So does anyone have any ideas?

Do I need to stay at the low end of the calorie range or cut carbs?

please remember that you are probably building muscle and that weighs more than fat. after your body stabilizes you will start to lose. also i found out that i had a lot of hidden calories, coffee mate, juices, etc. sometimes you eat to little and your body stores calories. i was working out every day and my body was not resting so now i do every other day with every day walking for a half of hour or more and low and behold 3 pounds fell to the way side.i put skim milk in my coffee better for you and if i want juice i half it with water. and when i work out hard i make sure i only drink 8 ounces of milk or soy milk not extra food and i do better.i hope this helps don't give up you are your way to a new healthier you. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Don't get to upset about it, I think we are nearly all in the same boat. I personally think it has to do with age and metabolism, like we don't have any at our age!!! my doctor told me a couple of weeks ago that my metabolism is where I left it when I was 27 years old!!! Just keep at it, you are on the right path for a healthy lifestyle and your heart will really be happy and one day thank you for all the work you are doing. Keep on going and remember baby steps, baby steps, you also may find that your clothes will fit better. Lynne

Getting with the program

Friday, January 16, 2009

Thanks to another member for sending me an e-mail and suggesting I make my page public. I had not even put a picture on the page because I was embarassed at how I look. I guess I feel like Ophrah in that I can't believe I allowed myself to gain this much weight. As I sat behind a desk and worked long hours and ate junk food, the weight slowly crept up until I became a person I didn't recognize and wasn't happy with. So here's to starting a more serious program today with the help of this web site and the encouragement of everyone. I posted a picture and made this page public.

I still haven't summoned the courage to post a "before" pic, lol. I did post my goal weight pic though. Maybe when I lose some weight I can add where I started from. I will think of you when I do!
