HALT before eating! My new weapon!

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

I tried the Five S System. Sorry to say I never remember it when faced with food. emoticon Still emoticon ! Frustrated!

So.... I am trying to do the HALT ! System before eating anything.
And if hunger is not my reason for wanting to eat, well, don't eat! Sounds simple! NOT!

For my whole life of 64 years ......I am eating for A..L..T..S

Anger, Loneliness, Tiredness, and Stress

And, guess what, the food never fills me up. DUH!

Sometimes, we are drawn into a negative circle of reactions to events which occurred many years before. Something in our environment makes us feel an intense emotion, and we try to fill the emptiness that emerges within us with unhealthy things: alcohol, drugs, food... stuff.

But, the solutions are rarely so simple. Frequently, the void that is uncovered is emotional. So, it is a much wiser course of action to try to fill that emptiness with positivity and the strengthening of social bonds.

It is important to strengthen our sense of self-worth and to increase the positive energy in our environment, so that when unfortunate events and/or memories arise, we have ready resources to draw on for overcoming those hurdles in healthy and beneficial ways.

I hope that the H.A.L.T. technique helps you to take a more proactive and self-strengthening approach to those times so that you can reach each of your goals.

Best wishes to you in your journey to good health and personal happiness.

Sometimes it takes several (many) tries to find what helps someone change. Hopefully this will help; but if not, just keep trying new ideas until you find what works.

yep, can totally relate. 3 meals helps me. When dinner is over, that is it. What ever comes up food can't be the "cure"...it doesn't work. If I indulge I feel guilty and then I eat to soothe the guilt which ends up backfiring any way! Hang in there! you can do this!

I've tried that too..asking myself if I'm actually hungry before eating. Although I learned a lot - most of the time, I simply WANTED TO eat..it didn't stop me.

Visual reminders help me. Pants that are too tight, or a photo of my favorite celebrity as a reminder.

Your post today is soooooo true. I can totally relate to ALTS. I think the HALT method will be a good one to try. Thanks for sharing. We are all worth the time and effort it takes to change our eating habits. Just keep on keeping on. You can do it!!

True! I do use HALT as well as journaling. It has taken me a long time to "get with the program". Just keep trying! You can do this. Nope . . . not easy.

Need a chuckle?

Saturday, November 12, 2011

A police officer had just pulled over a car full of nuns for going too slow on a major highway. The conversation went like this:

Police officer: "Why are you driving so slowly?

Nun driver: "I kept seeing all these signs with the number 20 on them and figured that was the speed limit."

Police officer: "No, Sister, that is the highway number."

Nun driver: "Oh, I'm so sorry, Officer, I did not know that."

Then the police officer looks into the back seat and sees that the nuns there have panic-stricken faces and white knuckles from holding on to each other too tightly.

Police officer: "What's wrong with the nuns in the back seat?"

Nun driver: "Oh, we just got off Highway 101 a few miles ago
