Soon--- I hope-- I will write my own mail sorting method!

Monday, August 13, 2012

I am not quite ready to do this. It will take some thought.

Your ideas have given me grist for the mill.

I am working on this. I can't thank you all enough!

BUY YOURSELF AN INEXPENSIVE SCANNER. YOU CAN PUT EVERYTHING IN ONE SMALL ENVELOPE AND DON'T HAVE TO KEEP ALL THAT PAPER ON YOUR DESK. I HAVE ONE FROM NEW EGG AND I LOVE IT. GOOGLE THE COMPANY AND SEARCH FOR SCANNERS.

I think the first step for you should be going here:
https://www.optoutprescree
n.com/opt_form.cgi
to stop a large portion of your junk mail. This will also help your credit score by stopping companies from checking your score and sending you unsolicited offers. You do have to re-sign up every now and again, like after moving, when you start seeing offers again. I've done it and it helps SO much!

After that, I suggest opening everything the minute you get it and make sure you know what it is. If it is urgent, keep it in sight where it will bother you until it gets done (doing it to get it out of your sight helps is a good motiviator) then schedule a day to do it.

If it is a bill, write the due date on the front of the envelope, then stack all the bills in order with the most recent due date on top. This way you can take 1 day each week to pull out any bills due within the next 10 days and pay them all at once.

I'd say the most important thing is to not put off looking at things. For instance, if you get a rebate check that is only good for 30 days and you don't open it for 35 days, you've just lost money. If it's a bill and it's overdue when you get around to paying it, you just burned money. A small amount of planning and some organizing can help a lot!

Day 1 Spark Coach Visualization- Me as I want to be

Monday, August 13, 2012

Me-as I want to be

Priority One is having energy for the whole day.

Shape of my body? Having a real waist would be nice for starters.

Pain level? Walking without leg pain would be great!

Having normal feeling hands, arms, tummy, legs, face--meaning not puffy.

I call all the magazine companies to tell them to take me off their list, same with all junk mail senders. They are actually glad not to have to pay the postage on sending something someone does not want. I, too, get rid of junk mail immediately in the trash. Bills, I pay right away. It can accumlate quickly so deal with it right away.

Put a 'no junk mail' sign on your mailbox. If you're household is anything like mine, that will get rid of 90% of your mail :) Plus, it's just being ecologically responsible. I read recently that junk mail in the States alone accounts for a million trees worth of paper every year!

After getting rid of all the junk mail, we sort into piles for the individual person. My fiance's mail pretty much just sits around until I go on a cleaning whirlwhind and toss a pile of paper in his lap with a 'deal with this', but I try to file away or shred and recycle everything as it's taken care of. Things that need to be kept out for reminders are posted on the fridge so we see them all the time.

I have a basket (re-purposed from a wine gift basket from one of my husband's employees, so it's very sturdy) that I put all catalogs in. It's near the TV. When I want to be with dh, but he's watching something that doesn't take all my attention, I'll grab a catalog to flip through. More often, though, I grab the whole basket, and start at the front flipping through, when I hit a duplicate of something (like 2 from HomeMag), I know the older one can be thrown out. This way I can have the stuff around in case I need it (can you say PACKRAT?) and get rid of it when it's replacement shows up.

Bills and to-do's are divided into 4 folders - Immediate/must do/1 week due (red), 2 weeks due/should do (orange), 1 month due/ought to do (yellow), and wow, wouldn't it be nice to do/no due date (green).

Then I have a reminder to look in the folders - recurring the times mentioned above. I used to use Outlook, but now use Google Tasks to remind me to look in the folders. Otherwise - out of sight out of mind.

Now, if someone could just tell me how to get DH to organize his stuff...

I get rid of the junk mail right away. Either to the recycle bin or if it has personal info I burn it. But my bf keeps his for a month at a time and it really piles up fast.

What neat and inovative ideas for dealing with the USPO mail
Do be careful not to throw away something important
Once a year we get an annuity payment that looks like junk mail almost threw it away without opening so from now on I open all mail and sort it into shred and not shred and do it immeadiately upon bringing the mail in the door it is to easy to say will do it later and then it piles up and is a chore to do

I sort my mail over the recycle bin which is in the garage. I have small containers for my magazines and catalogues next to my chair in the den. The catalogues get recycled as soon as I'm done with them and I give the magazines to our local library.
Next to my desk I have a standing file for anything tax related such as receipts. I pay almost all my bills online and have a container for this years paid bills on a bookshelf right next to my desk. If you let any of this stuff build up it will overwhelm you for sure! Good luck and I it helps.

I sort my mail at the recycle bin, which I have to pass walking from the mailbox to my door. I open mail asap and throw out, file, or pay whatever came in that day. Catalogs and magazines go in a tray next to my favorite chair and go to recycle immediately after I am done with them, or to my daughters if there is something of interest to them. emoticon emoticon emoticon

KGWINDER 8/12/2012 4:05PM

By the front door I have a basket for junk mail. Ads can go in there because if you ever need a coupon you know where to sort and it is right by the door so I can grab the whole basket if I'm going shopping.

Then I have a dresser with drawers by the front door - I sort mail into each of the top drawers for my daughter, husband and self....under that are two drawers for bill records and journals/magazines to read....the bottom drawer is projects (thank you letters, addresses to be added to my list etc in file folders) and the miscellaneous gloves, window defroster/scraper.

Most of my bills I put on automatic payment, but those that aren't go in a file folder on top of the bill records drawer. Come bill paying time the whole drawer slides out and follows me to my desk - where thing are paid, recorded and filed.

VTMAID 8/12/2012 3:49PM

Bills go to my briefcase and I pay them online at work. Actually at the beginning of the month I schedule all payments and just use the bills to make sure I have the date and amount right.
I keep a recycling bin in the kitchen for junk mail. However I do open it all and pull out any "special" offers with my name on them. Those I shred--I don't want any dumpster diver pulling that out of the trash and applying for credit using my name. Magazines I bring in to the office lunchroom. I get the Wall Street Journal daily and that gets recycled when I am done. Insurance forms, statements, receipts go in the file in the desk so I can find them next year at tax time.
Hope this helps, Chris!
Hugs

I toss the junk without even opening it, then go with the bills then personal mail if there is any. The junk mail really adds up quickly and makes a huge mess. I have a fireplace, and that is where the junk mail goes, right in to be burned.

I throw away the junk mail immediately!! Then I take any bills and put them in a bin at my computer. Magazines, I put in a little pile, and if they are still there in a week or so, out they go. Other stuff, it just depends on what it is. But I never have more than 2 days of mail on the counter by the door!!!

when my mail comes into the house . I look at it . bills go one spot and the junk gets shredded and tossed . i have a spot for my bills that i pull it out and pay bills on pay day and send mail or letter that need to be answered right away in one spot . works well for me . in the past i was a mess and bills where not paid in time or later then i wanted them .now i know what is due and what day . when i have to send the payment to get to them by the due date . I do not wait until its due to send .it goes out two weeks or more before it is due .

AUNTB63 8/12/2012 12:13PM

By mail and being every where I can assume you are talking about mail delivered to your house. What I do is look at my mail, sorting what I need to keep...bills, invites etc. Than I scan all the others...what I call mostly "junk" mail.....I immediately toss anything that is not of interest to me. I take any must be read mail and put it on my work space counter in the kitchen. Sometime before I go to bed this "stuff" will be read or at least looked through to see if I really want to read it. Anything still on the counter the next day gets tossed. Now if I could only do this with my reading materials I would have a clutter free area. Have a wonderful day....

Callaloo!

Sunday, August 12, 2012

A Jamaican friend brought a plastic bag of chopped callaloo . She cooked up some as a side dish. It was delicious. It beats spinach for nutrition! But, the Jamaican recipe can have coconut liquid which can add lots of calories. Other ingredients can add calories, too.

My friend gets baby plants from a local Jamaican farm. She grows it in her yard and has plenty. It is sold in cans, too. Our local supermarket sells this. Our town has plenty of Jamaican residents.

She also described a green smoothie she made with the callaloo.

Never heard of it either. Love learning about new foods. There are nearly fat free coconut liquids. Also, the regular coconut water, if chilled, you can skim the fat and make amazing whipped topping - vegan - for a treat. Look at site VeganJoy. She blogs, and is an amazing Vegan with two young children, also Vegan. Very knowledgeable.
