Thoughts on having no schedule

Saturday, October 25, 2008

This morning, yes I realize it's a Saturday, this morning I realized that I *missed* having a schedule dictated by someone else. How's the for a realization for you? Let me back up, since I haven't really posted anything substantial here.

This August, I started graduate school full time. I'm working on my Master's in English and I am so thrilled! I've been working on getting to this point in my life for over four years. Four years of getting my ducks in a row, doing a lot of hoping and praying, and finally getting up the nerve to submit applications. I actually reached my goal of graduate school one year early. In 2004, I had given myself a goal of five years to get everything taken care of that needed to be taken care of before graduate school, reconnecting with old professors, taking care of some debt so that I could take a huge pay cut, researching programs and saving up for the major expense of the GREs and applying. All that in mind, I'm really, tremendously proud of myself. I love my school, I love my program, In the last 10 weeks I've met some really awesome people who are my classmates. Really, all of this means I should be happy with the changes in my life, right?

Well, not this morning. This morning I rolled out of bed at... I don't know when. The sun was pretty high in the sky. And as I was standing in my kitchen, waiting for the coffee to finish brewing, I just felt all of the stress of my new schedule kind of collapse down on me. I've never been a morning person, I hate waking up. I seem to thrive after the sun goes down. And now, at 29, I hate myself for it. This is a schedule that I kept when I was 18 and when I was sliding into a lot of super unhealthy habits. Why can't I take hold of the wisdom of my years (ha!) and shake myself into a responsible schedule?

When I first expressed this concern to my boyfriend three weeks ago, he asked me, "Is that what you're body is telling you that you need to do?" Somehow, I don't think that's quite right. Because whatever is telling me it, I've got to change something....

OK, let's look at the "I hate myself for that." Stop that! Right now. Just stop it. It's stressful and useless. Have some compassion for yourself. You're doing something new and exciting and so you can't change everything you want to change all at once. So? You're human? That's bad?

As others have said, look at all you accomplished to get where you are. Not having structured expectations is hard. Focus on what you've been able to do at this point, instead of kicking yourself for what you haven't yet managed. Keep trying of course; it won't do to give up. You'll get there as long as you keep your sight on the goal. But if you can't do it all at once, if you have a lapse--or two, or three, or however many--pick yourself up again and start over.

Hmmmm well you did so good at getting all your ducks in a row..and you did that!!! Wow! Great planning. Ok, so this is where you have to be for some time. We don't always have to like everything we do, but sometimes it just has to be done. You can complain about what you have to do, but deep down you know the END RESULTS!!! Right now you have to look at the whole picture. Look at how many people can even think that they could be where you are..but YOU ARE DOING it! So many out of work and people who never can afford college..but YOU are Doing It! Sure complain if you want... I do the same... but know how lucky you are for this opportunity.. and This Too Shall Pass! Classes will be OVER before you know it... I always thought of school as just Time and Money...just put in the time now.. you have it made! Woo Hoo Go Girl!

HI! I can relate in 2-ways.

1. I work from home so I can do what I want when I want BUT I have a contract thus deadlines so I have to work those in .. along with

2. My grad school which is online as well and my last one before dissertation AND its ethics :(

Sometimes I feel the same way about not having a traditional work routine but you have to make it WORK. Meaning, you're getting paid in some way to go to school (regardless of the fact you're not working in an office) THUS you're responsible to someone else too, to do well.

So you get up, do a few chores and/or a walk outside to wake up. Eat breakfast, get a coffee OH and make sure you're dressed as if you're going to leave the house.. jeans/shorts whatever just NOT pj's! You'll never feel like you actually woke up!

Then you can use your diary or planner and actually write out the things you need to do. I factor in a chore a day since I"m home and my husband isnt. Toilets, kitchen.. whatever.

Make sure you leave the house at least 1x per day.

Set a time for 50-min work, 10-min break .. break is going outside, reading a magazine, healthy snack.. whatever but GET UP, LEAVE THE CHAIR.. move about.

Have a dedicated place for your work so you can spread out and make it the way you like to do things. I have a nice office that also doubles as a 2nd living room.. well at least visible to company so I have to keep it somewhat clean but it's mine.

IF you work better at night, which I do.. I tend to do my mundane things in the morning and then get into the meat of things later one. Check emails in the am and pm only. SParkpeople 1 or 2x per day.

Definetly organize your school schedule in your diary to ensure you dont forget an assignment etc.

Having been someone who has worked since 16, I took a big ego/emotional and professional hit coming to Germany (w/ my husband) and doing this work/school at home thing. It has many advantages but when you dont see people all the time, at least for me, is hard. I sometimes need people, smart people in my career field, to help the juices flow.

Good luck- email me if you have any other issues or questions

Jen

Homework is killing me

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

I really don't feel like an entire day has gone by, but there you have it. It's done. Overall it was a good day. I read 5 articles, and took breaks to work out in between them. The sugar cookies in the kitchen are killing me. Evil sugary cookie goodness.

Whatever, all in all today was a good day. I wish I could afford to pay someone to finish unpacking my house for me. I don't have time to take care of myself, do my work and finishing moving into this house.

I was feeling enthusiatic yesterday

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

I did quite a bit around the house yesterday. I ate a little more than I wanted to, but I stayed in goal. Got a good amount of physical activity in. All-in-all, I can't complain. Today, I'm working on some homework then it's time for either another walk, or a bit of yoga and bootcamp day 4.

I have been walking and walking and walking for hours while on vacation..but without a scale I don't have a clue what I am doing weight wise.. but that is ok.. at least I am moving. Keep Up the Good Work!
