My First Group Class!

Thursday, November 01, 2012

I took my first group exercise class tonight. I decided to start with Step & Core. It was a lot of fun and everyone seemed very welcoming. I admit that I was a little out of sync (ok, A LOT out of sync) but the important thing is I didn't stop moving. Even if I was doing the wrong thing or on the wrong foot, I didn't stop and I didn't quit. I am sure I looked like quite the fool, but I was having an awesome time and getting my heart rate up, so in the end that is what matters!!

Next week, on Tuesday, I am going to try an interval class.

Oh, and to make this day even more awesome, I won a gift basket at the gym. I bought some chances to benefit the Joyce Murtha Breast Cancer Foundation, and I actually won! It is a lunch bag and water bottle and some other funky stuff. I was pretty excited! I bought the chances because I always support stuff like that, and I actually won.. wow

I decided to go for it and buy some Mary Kay Skin care finally. I thought I would try it out and see how it works.

All in all, today was an awesome day!!

Things I just need to shut up about and do!

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

I keep saying that I am going to take a group exercise class and I never do. Tonight I printed out the schedule and have found a few classes that work into my schedule, but I am not sure what one I want to take...

1. Zumba
-- I have considered this on several occasions, but have not because I am afraid I will hurt myself. I need to get over that fear.

2. Interval Step (Tuesday) or Interval Cardio (Thursday)
-- I am not sure what these classes are, but they might be fun>

3. Step & Core
--- I thought this might be a good one since I have such poor core strength?

I have it figured out that I can take 1 class per week on either Tuesday or Thursday. One week I am off Tuesday, and One week I am off Thursday, so I can alternate it. I am not sure which class I want to go to. I thought about trying them all out to see which one I like the best.

Saving Money $$$$$

I keep telling myself that I need to put back $100 a pay check ($200 a month) in my savings account so I can go on a great shopping spree once I get to goal weight. I have about $650 put back, but I should have a lot more. I need to be more wise with my money... I keep saying that, and I don't follow through with it because I always find something I "need" -

Skin Care

I keep telling myself I am going to spend the money on some good skin care products and start trying to get my skin back into nice shape. I have failed miserably at that. That also is directly related to the above mentioned... spending money on skin care as opposed to saving...

Counsling

Yes, I am going to call my surgeon's office tomorrow and see if they can recommend a counslor. I notice some of my old patterns starting to emerge now that I am further out from surgery and closer to my goal. I'll be damned if I am going to let them get the best of me! I figure it is time to talk to someone who might be able to help me figure those issues out.

Strength Training

Yes, I have been meeting with a trainer, but I need to get serious about my strength training. I could really kick my own ass for not working on it since I started this journey, but I so easily got sucked into the cardio trap and was having so much fun with it, that ST just went to the wayside. Plus the fact I hate doing it, doesn't help.

I think that is about all for now

Zumba scares me. Maybe it's because I'm old.

One thing that I discovered about myself . . . . when it comes to mixing exercise and music, I am a danger to myself! Too many times to count, I have hurt myself just because I am paying more attention to what I am supposed to be doing than HOW I am supposed to be doing it. Always wind up with a pulled muscle or something....

I started out using SP's seated exercise videos targeting the core.
My chiropractor recommended it . . . and now I don't have to see him as often!!!

I've heard wonderful things about Zumba, but I have not tried it. I'm too afraid that I'm so out of shape I won't be able to keep up. I worry about making a fool of myself. I, too, need to work on my core strength, and my strength in general. I recently joined Spark People's 8 week Diabetes Weight Loss Challenge (I am pre-diabetic) and they require strength training as part of the challenge. I really want to complete the challenge and get my trophy, so it has encouraged me to do the required strength training video.

I agree with Bill - start with one thing at a time so that you don't feel overwhelmed by trying to do too much.

Best of luck to you!

I am not extremely coordinated, but I feel more comfortable in Zumba than I do in my classes that use a step. The good thing about Zumba is that you really just do what you can. When you first go, focus on the feet and leg movements...you can always add any arm movements later. As long as your moving, you are burning calories.

The step that we use in circuit training makes me nervous. We do a lot of bouncing up and down on the step and I'm scared I'm going to roll an ankle and come crashing down.

Regardless, definitely try them all out first if you can. Instructors, times, schedules, all can make a big difference.

you can find some great skin care ideas that are more toward natural, for example using brown sugar and olive oil, for skin scrubs and to moisturize the hair.
as for counseling, i am seriously considering going back, i went for a long time and had a wonderful counselor and then she left, and so i just quit going.
clothes, i am not even in that mind frame yet, when faced with this funeral this week, i got way in the back of my closet and dug out some old stuff and ended up giving half of it away to a sister in law.
but i could still fit into one pair of pants and a few sweaters, a little big, but wearable, so i am still a little away from a shopping spree.
as for the workout groups, i so so wish something like that was offered here.
its 25 miles to the ymca here and i do know of one zumba group, but i would be leaning more toward the cardio and core.
thats just me.
i hope you figure it out and you are doing a great job at saving money.

Your list kinda sounds like mine. No one said life was going to be easy - and it surely isn't. With all my I need to list and my want to list come together it can be overwhelming - I have to keep reminding myself to do the baby steps and it will eventually all come together. Best of luck on your journey.

Life is Hard. Food is Easy

Monday, October 29, 2012

If you have never read Life is Hard. Food is Easy, you really should. It deals with emotional eating and how to overcome it.

Because of this book, I am going to start keeping track of when I feel the need to eat, what I want to eat and what emotions I am feeling at the time I want to eat.

I have noticed I want to eat a lot when I am bored and stressed out. I don't really get sad or depressed much anymore, so, they really aren't emotions I feel.

Despite the storm, I got up and went to the gym today and had an awesome session with Olivia. We worked on core and back with some other stuff thrown in. We were going to run some intervals, but I had to split because I had to go to the doc to be shot up with stuff.

After that I went shopping. I bought an awesome new shirt at Ross and a really cool scarf and coffee mug. I went to Khols and bought 2 pair of yoga pants that were on clearance for $5 a pair. That was a pretty good deal.

I wandered around a few more stores until about 20 mins before my eye appointment. I arrived early so I could pick out new glasses. I got a really funky pair and they will be here next week some time. I also got new contacts. My left eye changed. It was worse than last time :(

I think that is all for now

Hopefully it's not storming too bad where you live. I know that for me, Sunday afternoons and evenings can be dangerous for emotional eating because I'm dreading the start to the week. I definitely can wind up snacking more if I'm at home than if I get up, go out, and do something.

I think the harder thing is not necessarily eating more often, it's just eating comfort and unhealthy foods when I'm stressed out. Like I'd rather reach for something full of carbs when I'm tired and stressed, usually because it's easier but also because I crave it.

I am sure that the more strength training I do, the more these will go down. Still, I don't think that is too shabby!!!

The East Coast is set to get hit with a large storm. I personally think people are in a panic over nothing. At least in the area that I live in. I am prepared though. I have my Nook fully charged and my laptop is also charged. If we lose power I will be able to read and watch movies. When the battery on my Nook starts to die, I have a car charger... not sure about the laptop tho?

I am a little worried about my Jeep. I am not sure if we are going to get winds like they say, but if we do, my Jeep needs to be garage kept since it is a rag top. The good news is, my employer has a huge garage where they work on trucks, so, the shop foreman said I can park it in an unused bay.

I can't believe that I am only 6 pounds away from losing 100 pounds... I am still having a hard time wrapping my head around that.

Today is a lazy day. I am hanging out on the couch watching Twilight doing nothing. Well... ok, I have laundry in, but that really doesn't take a lot of effort. I will make pasta later on for work lunches for Monday and Tuesday but not until much later on tonight.

It is supposed to be horrible out tomorrow and I have a full day. I meet my trainer at 11, then 1230 I have to go to the doctor to get a few injections, and finally at 1530 I have an eye appointment. I figure I will do a little shopping in between. Then I have to work all night. It is going to be a long day!!

I think that is all for now

I spent the evening at the Library where I volunteer. I dressed as the Cat in the Hat and handed out treats and goodie bags to the kids. It was such a fun time!
