Where's My Focus

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

There are times in life when we can be so driven to achieve certain things that we miss what is truly important. While there are several things that I hope to accomplish during my time on this earth, there is one thing that stands out the most to me.

Like many of you I have a vocation that requires me to do a lot of things that I feel are important. Indeed, many of the things that I am seeking to accomplish. However, if I fail to be the husband and father that my wife and daughters need, then all of the other perceived successes in life will be of little value.

While I believe that God has called me to the vocation in which I serve, I also believe that He has called me first and foremost to a relationship with Him, and then in relationship to my family.

Perhaps, I am alone in trying to balance my time with my family along with the responsibilities of my job, but I don't think so.

What are some ways that you seek to keep yourself focused upon those who matter most?

Rain, Rain Go Away!

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Just another rainy day here in Mid-Mo. I'm very thankful to have a roof over my head and to not be working outdoors like the construction guys having to work in this mess in the block next to our building.

One of the nice things about rain is that it enables me to get a good night's sleep. Unfortunately, it also makes me feel like I want to take a nap; which is not an option for me today.

I was blessed to have no encounters with any of our four-legged friends on my drive home from the Meremac river area last night. Thanks to all of you who prayed for me, and especially for our loving God who answered your prayers in the affirmative.

Looks like I'll be heading a little farther due south this evening to Texas County. If you think of it pray for me again as I travel on some of our twisty two lane roads.

Hopefully, everyone of you are preparing your hearts and minds for the upcoming holiday next week. Can you believe it, Thanksgiving is just over a week away.

Have a wonderful day!

Another crazy week!

Monday, November 16, 2009

Like most of you, this time of the year is a hectic one for me. My job does require me to do a lot of in state travel, and this week is going to be a challenge. It's not so much the driving that will be a challenge for me as it is the fact that deer season began this weekend and bambis will be running all over the place in the parts of our state where I will be driving.

So if you pray, would you please lift me up as I travel in the byways of Southern Missouri this week. I would really like to now have an encounter with one of those four-legged creatures on one of our two lane roads through the woods.

Definitely in my prayers!! My brother-in-law got a nice buck last week....unfortunately, it was with his car!! I guess since I'm pregnant, I'm more hormonal than usual, but seeing all of these deer dead on the side of the road lately is just making me cry! Be careful!!!

Taking a Day Off

Sunday, November 15, 2009

One of the most difficult things for me to do during my fitness journey has been to take a day off from impact cardio at least once a week. Since I enjoy running, it is easy for me to not take the necessary time off to allow my body to recover. Since I have begun taking that day off each week I have begun to see my body respond positively to the day of rest.

Of course, I should know better. Taking a day of rest is a command from the Old Testament. Unfortunately, it is difficult for many of us to observe in our overly busy world. My wife has agreed to encourage me to be sure to take the day of rest from exercise as seriously as I seek to take the Sabbath seriously with respect to my job.

Good for you! I, unfortunately, don't have trouble taking days off....in fact, I tend to take too many of them....HAHA, but I know for you avid runners, it's a hard thing to do. Good for you getting your wife involved!!!

Rest is definitely important, regardless of how fit a person may be. Your body will appreciate the time off as you prepare for the new week. Have a great one. emoticon

i guess i don't always consider excercise work, so for me i do not feel like i need a day off.

i have tried to take time out to enjoy the simple things lately. Sometimes i get so cought up in "stuff" i don't enjoy the people in my life and give then the time they deserve.

What a run

Saturday, November 14, 2009

A friend at work has helped me with a running program that will begin to prepare my body for a marathon in the spring. The focus of the week is the long run, which for me is on Saturday. Today I was supposed to go 13 miles, but as I was running I decided to push myself a little further.

When I picked up running again about 6 years ago, I did not honestly believe that I would ever be able to handle a distance like this. The exciting thing was that after I was done running, I truly felt like I could have gone farther.

What is something that you can do now, that you couldn't do before you started your exercise regimen?

I started running in July. I could barely do quarter miles. Now I'm up to 3 1/2 miles and entered to do a 5K next Saturday!
