Tonight is the beginning of the end of one of the longest rivalries in college sports. Mizzou and Kansas will play their last conference game in Columbia tonight in front of the usual sold-out crown at Mizzou arena. The teams will then play again later this month in Lawrence. Other than meeting in the conference tourney, this might well be the end of rivalry that extends to Phog Allen's first game against his alma mater back in the early 1900's.
A lot of the blame for the end of this rivalry has been placed upon the leadership at MU. While some of this criticism is fair, the bigger and more glaring issue is the changing landscape of college athletics. Sports at these institutions has become more and more about money than anything else.
I will not spend a lot of time giving my humble opinion on this matter. I am simply stating my own disappointment that this rivalry is coming to an end.
Oh well, might as well enjoy it while it lasts.
