Another 5K

Friday, June 10, 2011

My 15 yr. old DD was not happy with her time at our 5K on 6/4 (the first for both of us). She said she "choked". So, we registered for one on 6/18, so now I have my motivation at least for a couple more weeks! Been going to the park where we did our class and Monday I did 35 min. and last night I did the 3.1 in 33 min. This was my best time yet! I ran (jogged) almost the whole time except for the "hill" the second time around. I'm proud to say I made it further without stopping to walk, so I'm improving my endurance. The course on 6/18 is also very hilly (which is pretty much the norm in N. GA.), so I'm going to have to conquer the hills.

On a side note, we were looking at pictures from the race photographer and my parents were in a lot of them on the sidelines. They kept looking down the road probably wondering where we were! At one point my Dad was looking at my Mom and shrugging his shoulders, he was probably saying "where the hell are they"?! My daughter & sister came in before me and when I ran past my Dad, he shouted "hurry up, you're loosing!" Oh well, that's my Dad's way of motivation, even to his 50 year old daughter running her first 5K emoticon

Yep, that's my Dad! We were at a softball tournament this weekend for my middle DD and my Dad was sitting next to me. I swear he and I were saying the same thing to my DD, so the apple doesn't fall far from the tree! I realized I was being a tad negative, so I changed up my "motivation". I think she responded better to the "tough love"!

Congrats on completing the first and even more congrats on signing up for a second race. What a great job and a wonderful way to keep you motivated! (and don't dads just have their own quirky ways of trying to motivate?)

I finished my first 5K on Saturday!!!

Monday, June 06, 2011

After 9 weeks of "training" with a C25K program at our local park, Saturday was race day! I finished my first 5K in 37:37. I was pretty pleased with the time. Running the past couple of weeks has been very hard. North Ga. is in the middle of a heatwave and it's still 90+ degrees @ 8:00 p.m. At our class last Tuesday @ 6:00 p.m., it was really, really hot. We were working on running as far as we could go and finish the 3.1. I finished, but it took 42 min. I ran again on Thursday morning and was able to finish in 36 min. T.he race started @ 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, but it was already 80+ degrees. The route started with a fairly steep hill, which is pretty normal in our area. I got to the halfway point jogging the whole way and had finished my first mile @ 12:48 (which is slower than I've been doing). At the loop, we then had to go up a very steep hill. I had to walk that one and then tried to jog the rest of the way. I thought I was at the finish line and then "turned it on", but I forgot we had to go back to the parking lot, so I peaked a little early. All in all, it was a great morning. My daughter and my sister were faster, but I'm just glad I finished in less than 40 min. (my goal)

Now I have to keep up the motivation!! There's another 5K on 6/18 that we're thinking about running. Hopefully this heat will break and it will go back to the normal temperatures of low 90's!

I know the running program has helped with my maintenance since I'm still below my goal for 10 weeks now!

Over the weekend I have decided to try running. This is something I always wanted to do and I need to prove to myself I can. So I will train and wait for a small first race but I do want to do this.

Lifetime & A Mile!

Thursday, May 12, 2011

Last night I made Lifetime @ Weight Watchers. I maintained my goal for 6 weeks and am now considered a Lifetime member. I actually stayed 1 lb. below my goal, so I was happy about that after my out-of-town/Mother's Day food fest! 6 weeks of maintaining was by no means a "picnic", but I do think my success will depend on continuing to track my food, exercise and not have that "I can have that now that I'm on maintenance"mentality. I don't mean depriving myself of anything, I just mean don't over do it. You can have a cookie, not the whole box!

I also ran for 10 min. on Tuesday at my C25K training. Didn't quite make a mile (but I was close - my daughter showed off and did a mile + in that time - but she's just 15!) Tonight we will run a mile and then run 1/2 mile. I think I mentioned before, if I didn't sign up for this program (and pay for it), I would have quit! It is really hard, but there's a real sense of accomplishment when you're done. I'm waiting for some adrenaline or something to kick in so I can keep going. I still can't imagine running 3.1 miles. We have 4 weeks before our race. Our instructor/coach is very encouraging and she says we'll be there. I haven't been using my Ipod since we've been listening out for the whistle, but maybe I need to start and get some real motivational music going. At least I wouldn't have to listen to my heavy breathing!!

Out of Town & Mother's Day

Monday, May 09, 2011

Wednesday is my 6th week of maintenance with WW. I was hoping that I would be within my goal and will become a Lifetimer. I'm still hoping, but a little concerned. I was out of town last Wed - Fri. at a training seminar for work. I made some good choices and some not so good ones. What is it about "free" food?! It was so nice to not have to plan/prepare, that I went a little overboard. Every meal had a "dessert" and then there were breaks with more food. I did better than I would have in the past. I stayed away from the breaks by just grabbing a bottle of water and taking a walk. We were in Newport, RI, which is a beautiful place and the hotel was right on the bay and across the street from the shopping/historic district, so it was a walking paradise (cold though for my Southern bones!). I also didn't want to loose any momentum for my C25K, so I did my Thursday program on the treadmill (didn't really like that, but I did it). Got back on track Saturday and then came Mother's Day. Had a nice brunch at my sister's house and then my husband grilled out a nice dinner for me. Couldn't stay away from the desserts again and my portions were out of control.

Anyway, at least now I have a track to get back on. Ate my usual breakfast, packed my lunch this morning and will be busy tonight with kids/etc. - so I'll have a quick, healthy dinner. I won't have time to eat more than my P+, plus the dessert is gone!

Time will tell, but my scale still shows me within my goal. So we'll see on Wednesday's WI!

Maintenance & C25K Part III

Thursday, April 28, 2011

I just weighed in last night for my 4th week of maintenance with WW. I stayed the same and am still 1 lb. below my goal weight, so I'm good. 2 more weeks and I'll be a Lifetimer! I must admit, it was a little disappointing to not loose, even though my goal now is to maintain. Mentally it wasn't the same. I stayed for the meeting and I realized how much I liked getting the recognition when I would loose weight. Kinda pathetic, but I was a little disappointed again that I wasn't getting any recognition (Loser!) Anyway, I still plan to weigh in each week and attend meetings when I can. I definitely need the accountability of the weekly WI.

Also started week 3 of C25K. We ran 4 min. 5 X on Tuesday. We tried that on Monday and was not able to do all five 4-min. runs. We could only do 3 4-min. and 2-3 min. I was very excited that I was able to do it Tuesday. It was really hot & humid on Monday and Tuesday was a little cooler with a nice breeze, so that might have helped. Tonight's run is a little weird. I don't remember the exact breakdown, but I do remember there's a 5 min. run in there somewhere! I think I've mentioned this before, but I'm glad that I paid for this program with the parks department, because I would have quit by now. It's hard! But I'm actually starting to feel a little like a runner. Thankfully after the storms we had last night, tonight will be nice & breezy!
