Race in February and 1 out of 3!

I decided to sign up for a 5K on 2/11 - The Great Valentine's Race (the shirt looks cute!). My goal is to improve my race time to under 36 min. by June (the anniversary of the end of my C25K and my first race). I've been increasing my runs to 3.4+ and hoping by building up my endurance and running longer, I can run 3.1 faster. I've also been running mostly on the greenway (very flat and the location of the race on 3/3).

Since the race I signed up for on 2/11 is the same course of one I did back in November, I know it's pretty hilly. So on Friday, since I had limited time to run before it got dark, I headed back to the hilly course at the park. I decided to run up the huge hill that I usually run down. It about killed me and I almost couldn't complete the loop (1.5 miles). Finished that up and since it was almost dark, walked around the small loop by the playground and then chit chatted with a friend I saw at the playground.

I knew I was going to be busy running around on Saturday, so I really wanted to do my strength training routine I downloaded from Spark. I had to get DD#1 to the church @ 7:30 a.m. for the retreat she was going on and I promised DD#3 that I would take her to the ballet that her friend was in @ 11:00 a.m. Did not want to do this, but it was actually a pretty good performance. Needless to say, I did not do the ST - big fail! Plus, I still haven't done it! Oh well, finished up Saturday taking DD#2 dress shopping for her basketball banquet next week. I'm not sure anyone can relate, but it's very hard to find dresses for teenagers that are tall. DD#1 is 5'8+ (16) and DD#2 (13) is 5'9"+. Anyway, we found her a cute dress at Ross for only $15.99 (score!), were lucky to find her a cute pair of flats at Payless (size 11) and then it was time to take her to a friends' play! So I ended Saturday night up eating crap since I was too busy to cook ( or plain didn't want to). (DH had to work).

Sunday started off and ended busy, but in between DH and I were able to run. We went to the hilly part again and I looped twice for 3 miles. I had a pretty good time and it was definitely a workout.

Now if I could just get going with the ST and stop eating too much these 5 lbs. would just melt off! Oh well, no sense beating myself up. 1 goal outa 3 ain't bad and it's still only January!

P.S. my sister that was looking for "guidance" about joining WW has lost 8 lbs. in 2 weeks. She's doing great (I feel some jealous competition kicking in!). Her "buddy" however, lost 3 lbs. the first week and gained them back the second. My sister is all over her and I told her you can't control what she does, you can just control what you do. She has to "want it". Pretty wise words from the yougest sister!

Monday I took a day off after my 5+ mile run on Sunday (it was still raining) and squeezed in a run before DD#3's Girl Scout meeting yesterday. We finally had sunshine yesterday and I didn't want to miss my opportunity since it's going to be raining again by Thursday. I live in North Georgia and I know we were in a moderate drought last summer and need the rain, but really 5 straight days of rain/clouds/fog?!

Anyway DH got off at 4:00 yesterday too, so we hit the trail by 4:30 since I had the meeting @ 6:30. I've been noticing the days are getting longer again, so it won't be such a rush to get on the trail before it's dark. It was a beautiful afternoon - 60 degrees and really sunny! I figured after my longer run on Sunday, 3.4 would be a breeze! Well as you know, running is never a "breeze" for me, but I did pretty good. This was my fastest 3.4 since I started to increase my distance. I think I could have even done it faster, but my cousin's husband was riding his bike on the trail and the second time he passed me, he stopped and we chit chatted for a couple of minutes. I was actually proud that I was still able to carry on a conversation because I had been running about 30 mins. at that point. Anyway, DH said he thought that slowed me down, but I think I was keeping up my pace. Oh well, we'll never know!

I feel pretty good about my 2012 goals. I'm increasing my running and improving my time. I've got the eating somewhat back in control and I've managed to squeeze in a little ST. This is what I really want to work on and I've got to find a routine I enjoy and will get up at 5:30 ish a.m. to do a couple of days a week (and Saturday, but not @ 5:30 a.m.).

All in all - a pretty positive January!


I Ran for Over an Hour Without Stopping!

So, I mentioned on Friday that DH wanted to run the entire "leg" of the greenway instead of stopping and turning around to get in about 3+ miles. I was contemplating either running/walking it with him or riding bikes with my girls. I was pretty certain I would come up with all kind of excuses not to run the whole way!!

I didn't get to run at all Friday & Saturday because we've been having some really wet weather here in N. Georgia. We've been getting the March/April weather in January. In fact we had tornadoes Saturday and a lot of the western part of the state has warnings today.

Anyway, Sunday was cool, foggy, windy & drizzly. Perfect for running, right?! We get home from church around 10:30 and by 11:00 DH is dressed and ready to go. The girls' didn't want to go because of the weather, but I decided to go with him and not drive separately - I would give it a try. I figured we'd be the only crazy people at the trail, but it was actually quite crowded. He gave me the car key in case I wanted to turn around early. He said he was going to just run until he couldn't and then walk. We started off and he stayed about 30 seconds ahead of me. This was probably the most miserable weather I've run in so far! We got past the place we usually turn around and the trail was flooded with mud, but we kept going. The greenway is built on land that is mostly wetlands, so a lot of it is boardwalk. We get to a long boardwalk stretch and the water was even with the boardwalk, but as we are running on it, the water starts coming through the cracks. Let me tell you, I was miserable, cold, wet feet, knees aching, etc. I really wanted to turn around, but thought we were pretty close to the "end".

Turns out the entire stretch was about 5.6 miles instead of 6+, so the "end" was about 2.8 miles (I had to figure all this out when I got home because I can't do math & run). Anyway, DH and I were still running (or slow jog!) at that point. I kept telling myself, just keep going for 45 min. that would be your record. I got to 45 min. and DH was still going, so I kept on. I ran without stopping for 1:07 - over an hour! I probably could have kept going, but my knee was hurting and the toes on my left foot. I walked briskly for about 5 min., it was probably about the same pace because my stride was longer and then I knew we were almost done, so I picked back up the running. I ended up "sprinting" at the end and catching up with DH!!! I couldn't believe I ran 5.6 miles in 1 hour and 13 minutes! I was really excited.

We got home and my daughters were all laying on the couch and DH#1 said - "you look rough Mom" and I said, "I just ran 5.6 miles!". They were impressed!!

I was really sore later that day and ended up having to take 2 extra strength tylenol. I almost fell asleep before the 2nd playoff game was over!

I feel fine today, just a little stiff. I won't be running tonight because it's raining again. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice, so I'll head back out after work. I think I'll stick to my 3.4 - 3.5 run. I don't think I'm ready to push it anymore right now - but I did it!!


Run (and walk) 6.5 miles?!

First of all, I had a good run on Wednesday. It was still a little cold (about 40 &windy), but I warmed up pretty quickly. I've pretty much been through all 4 seasons with my running. I started in early April last year with my C25K and kept running through the summer & fall and now winter. I've been out there when it's 90+ and 90% humidity and 30ish with a wind chill. I have to say, I think my favorite is 55-75 degrees! Fortunately in North Ga. there are lots of 55-75 degree days, but we do have to endure the 90+ (last year that was early May - late September!).

Anyway, I had a pretty good time for my 3.4 miles. As usual, the first 5 min. are the hardest for me and I have to push through. The last 5 min. now are also really hard, because I'm running longer. Let's face it, it's all hard! I keep thinking this should be easier (I know I complain a lot!) and I marvel at the people that do 10K's, 1/2 marathons and especially the marathon runners! Now, I have no desire to run a 1/2 or a full marathon, but I am a litle curious about traning for a 10K.

So, this morning my husband and I were talking before leaving for work about our running schedules. Because of his work schedule, we haven't been able to run together since last Friday and the next time we can is Sunday after the religious ed. class we teach (our 5th Grade DD). He mentioned that we might want to drive seperately because he wants to run a section of the "greenway" that is about 6.5 miles. He knows he won't be able to run the whole thing, but wants to see how far he can run/walk. First I said, maybe we'll all go with you and we'll ride bikes (me & the 3 girls). They've been wanting to ride for a while. Now I'm thinking maybe I'll give it a try. It's the perfect day for it because we'll have a couple of hours before having to get DD#2 to her RE class, so why not?! The girls can still ride their bikes while we "run".

So we'll see from now until Sunday how many times I change my mind! Am I up for the challenge?

The Scale is Going the Wrong Way!

I had great success with the scale last week on my journey back to my goal. I lost 1.2 lbs. of the 6 I needed to loose. This week, not so much. Not only did I gain back the 1.2 lbs., but 2 additional ones. I won't bore you with TMI on TOM (let's say chocolate was involved and lots of it!) and I know all the reasons the scale can show such a difference, I didn't consume that many more calories over the weekend (although I gave it a good try!). I almost didn't put the weight down this morning because now my tracker shows I need to loose 7 lbs., but I bravely entered my weight. After all, I would just be lying to myself. Just think, next week's WI will rock!

On a happier note, I started measuring again and I did loose 2 inches this week so the ST & running is paying off.

On the running side, I ran 3.4 miles again last night without stopping. I really felt like I was running in place at times, but my time was actually a min. faster than last Monday's 3.4 run at the same course.

So my 2 positives trump my 1 negative!
