Zumba!

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

One thing I wanted to share with those who may be having trouble getting to the gym - check out what classes your gym offers! I was scared to death of trying something new that required athletic ability since it's been a while since I had done anything but running. I got up the courage to try Zumba - and I LOVE it! I look forward to going to the gym every Tuesday & Thursday night now! So get up your courage, remember that everyone at the gym wants the same things you want, and try something new! You never know what you'll learn about yourself!

Back in the Saddle

Monday, January 09, 2012

Getting back in the saddle is harder than it sounds! My body got used to the food I let it eat due to weddings, Christmas, and cruises. It is not happy about going back to the way things were before all that craziness! Somehow I didn't think it would be this difficult, but I now stand corrected. It's HARD! Anyone else having trouble with things that were second nature before the Holidays?

5K Success and New Goals

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Well, my big goal for 2011 (besides losing weight) was to become a runner again. In high school, I was incredibly active. I played volleyball in the summer and fall, basketball in the winter, and soccer in the spring. Some days I would have a two hour practice, then come home and go to the gym with my sister. When I went away to college my freshman year, I kept the same active lifestyle, playing volleyball and basketball, and then working out or playing tennis with my friends. After freshman year, however, I came back home and transferred schools. Suddenly there was no sports team to play for, no big game to train for, and my workout buddy now lived 6 hours away. In addition to those changes, I had become incredibly iron and vitamin D deficient, and didn't feel well. In only two years, I gained over 60 pounds! I never exercised, and turned to food to comfort me when I was missing my friends and not feeling well. My family never made me feel anything less than beautiful, and for awhile I stayed in a state of denial over my weight gain. Eventually, though, I realized that I wasn't even the same person I had been two years before. I dreaded shopping, wanted to wear baggy clothes, hated being in pictures, and avoided new situations and new people because I was embarrassed by the way I looked. By Christmas 2010, I was FED UP with feeling like crap physically and emotionally. New Years 2011 seemed like the perfect time to change my life. I started out pretty slowly and quietly. I cut out the Cokes I had been drinking daily, added fruit to my diet, and began walking on the treadmill for twenty minutes almost daily. By March I had lost enough weight that I felt ready to start jogging again. I started out jogging for only one minute at a time, then walking before doing one more minute. It took two months before I could run for fifteen minutes, and three months before I could run a mile without stopping. On Thanksgiving Day 2011, I woke up feeling sick to my stomach with nerves. "I can't do this, " I kept telling myself, "I'll never be able to run the whole thing." It was one of the hardest things I've ever done, but I finished the whole race without a single walking break! That sense of accomplishment was so amazing I can't even describe it. My two New Years resolutions were: Lose weight and Become a runner! I have lost fifty pounds since January, and ran a 5K. Now I've started dreaming up 2012's goals. But that's for another post. =)

The Light at the End of the Tunnel

Thursday, October 20, 2011

I have been on SparkPeople since February 2011 and have used it some, but I have just recently begun to use this tool more. I am very motivated by reading articles and success stories, so this site has been an excellent help! I have lost over 45 pounds now (hard to know the exact number since different scales say different things) and will find out exactly how much when I go to the doctor in December. Within the last month I have actually finally reached the point where I do not hate looking in the mirror, and that's exciting to feel for the first time in at least three years! I feel so much better physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally than I have in years. I actually feel like a 22 year old! emoticon Obviously this is one of the good days, but the bad days still come. I hope I can keep this positive mindset all the way through the rest of the year!
