Spring cleaning in the back yard

Wednesday, April 03, 2013

Since the weather has been in the 50's and hopefully reaching low 60's this week, I have been in the back yard. This actually started about 2 weeks ago when my husband and I decided that our beat up and bottom rotting fence needed a revamp. After contacting a few companies and picking out our options we decided on a picket style with a color matching our house.

It is semi-private, allows for some breeze but keeps the neighbors dogs out of our yard. Picking up other people's canine mess is not my idea of a good time. So although we did not install the fence, we did decide on the design.

Then I reseated the walking pavers because some had settled and were uneven and uncovered my hostas. The fence guys were good about cleaning up their debris from the old fence but some of the extra dirt was just tamped down by the border and that is where my plants were growing. I also planted some new shade plants and set up our new off the ground, rotating compost bin.

Our next project will be starting soon. Remodeled bathrooms. We are combining 2 very small ones into a larger useable one. I worked with the architect to design that too although the design and remodel company will be doing the work.

Betting on dieting

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

I saw a story on the today show this morning about a website where you can bet on your dieting habits. If you accomplish what you bet, then you win money, if you don't you pay a penalty.

Sounds kinda interesting. Will it motivate me to make more time to go to planet fitness, I don't know. I already go 2-3 times a week. I do want to look around the site and see what it is about.

Self-reporting? Way too easy to "stretch the truth!" But if it works for you, it works for you.

Am I evil for eating Quinoa?

Sunday, January 20, 2013

according to a friend of mine, YES!

She came across an article
about Quinoa and how it is destroying bolivia. So her conclusion was that all vegetarians, especially vegans, were evil people because they eat quinoa.

I attempted to explain to her that my eating quinoa was not part of some master plan to destroy the country of Bolivia but instead a nutritious way of getting more protein into my diet. I also reminded her that buying meat in the grocery store was promoting the bad practices of major farming and let's not even talk about the WALMART factor.

Of course, this did not go over very well. Bad vegetarian! how dare I pick on meat eaters?!

Anyway, I opened my pantry this morning to come face to face with a 5LB bag of organic Quinoa. Well, dammit I am not throwing it out! However, my plans for church dinner this saturday have changed because my friend will be there and to keep the peace, I am removing quinoa from the menu.

I have come across an article of my own which shows how Quinoa is actually improving the quality of life in Bolivia

I try very hard to live my life with as little impact on others as possible and actually eat local but things like Quinoa are not grown in Maryland or in the US. So currently this debate is at am impasse but I am now curious about the entire issue.

Edit: I have found one last article by the NY Times which is more neutral and addresses the concerns of the previous two articles. The problem does not seem quinoa is the major problem, though it is a contributing factor, but more widely available processed, junk food.

so, though it does sadden me that rising export costs have Bolivians not able to afford Quinoa, I can have my meal with a clear concise knowing that the farmers are making higher wages and farming practices have improved. emoticon

so, we go with what works for our needs! I eat quinoa too . . . and sorry, but I LOVE it! Not putting it out of my diet anytime soon, that's for sure.

I found the key to weight loss!

Sunday, December 30, 2012

Since about Dec 23, the scale has been teetering between 223-225. I have been diligently picking and choosing what to eat such as no holiday cookies, fudge or popcorn balls. Love those popcorn balls! So, perhaps my gain from 220 has been my lack of water consumption which I struggle with on a daily basis.

Xmas eve dinner at the SIL's house had me choosing between caramelized walnut sweet potatoes or having a mini black bottom cupcake. Since the SIL struggles with my vegetarianism, because it must be the IN thing and it will go away although it hasn't since I met her 10 years ago .... **sigh** that is a story for another time.

Anyway, back to the dinner, she bought me a frozen veggie lasagna. Stouffer's and not too bad but I just had this on Thanksgiving. So, I opted for having both the sweet potatoes and the black bottom mini cupcake and no lasagna only steamed veggies. Much to her chagrin! But I ate lasagna for the next 4 days. emoticon

So imagine my surprise this morning when I got out of bed confronted that doggone scale and it showed me 220. I was perplexed and then suddenly it hit me .... emoticon .... it was the bowl of Black Cherry chocolate chip ice cream that I ate last night.

Well, who knew that Breyer's Black Cherry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream was the key to weight loss. Ok, probably not but hey, I can dream can't I?

Navigating the Holidays isn't always easy. I had been sure that my "pigging out" surely would have let to weight gain especially since I no longer had time to exercise.

Lo and behold, I had dropped 2lbs as well.

Hey, if it works, keep going until it doesn't! And then maybe drink a couple extra glasses of water as a counteraction.

I'm willing to try it! I'll have to add Breyer's Black Cherry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream to my shopping list. I wonder if Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia would have the same desired effects???!!!

I've been in the same "visitor trying to be gracious when confronted by unusual BUT it's vegetarian food choices by considerate hostesses" boat. I guess there are a LOT of patty shaped foods in the grocer freezer section!

Love the idea that ice cream maybe the key. Wouldn't it be nice if it were that easy. Sorry you ate days of veggie lasagna but I'm sure there are worse things. Keep on pushing, you are worth it and can do it.

I'm with you, dreaming about the ice cream! What is it with the meat eaters that they just can't wrap their heads around the no meat thing. My poor son would starve every time we go to my mother-in-law's house for a big celebration, not a vegetable in sight. I bring him tofu.... emoticon
