Waaaaaaay Overdue

I've seriously started a blog like 5 times and have yet to finish one or post anything in almost a month! I kept thinking I should wait until I have something to positive to post, which has finally happened.

I decided to do a detox this week (Tuesday-Thursday) to cut out the crap I've been eating lately (Jimi did it too!). We decided to cut out sugar, dairy, wheat, caffeine, alcohol and all processed foods. What did we eat? Tons of veggies, some chicken, beans, fruit and more veggies. And lots of water. Honestly, it really wasn't all that hard. Although tonight, I accidentally ate a few noodles that I was cooking for a pasta salad we're having this weekend. Tasting food to see if it's ready... old habits die hard... I also had a tiny bit of parmesan cheese each morning because I'd made a huge batch of hash brown cups over the weekend and didn't want them to go to waste. Link to recipe:

I think the hardest part was not eating yogurt for breakfast. That probably sounds like it's not a big deal, but I eat breakfast at work and was at a loss for what else to pack with my fruit and oatmeal! Also, I think I'd had so much water during the day that I wasn't as snacky as I usually am in the evenings, so that was definitely a plus.

On the exercise front, I've been slacking hardcore. I've kept up with my 10 minutes streak (150 days woot woot!), but I've been barely scraping by and I'm seriously lacking intensity. I've been doing yoga and bodyweight exercises, but have only run once a week. I'll post something this weekend with new goals for June.

    Woooohoooo! That is awesome! So happy to hear you stuck to it all week. Having the hubby do it with you makes a world of a difference. It makes it less tempting on days you want to give in.

Meal Plan (aka procrastinating)

I have had the laziest weekend ever! I know we all need them every once in awhile, but geez. I feel like a bum (as I type this in my pjs...).

Ordinarily, I would start with a future meal, but last night's dinner was so good, I thought I'd post the link for the recipe.
Spicy Stuffed Spaghetti Squash

I went a little heavy on the cayenne, but man was this good. Instead of adding the filling onto the 'spaghetti,' I scraped the spaghetti into the pan with the filling, mixed it around, and then put it back into the skin and topped it with cheese. Since it was all hot already, I just broiled it for a few minutes to melt the cheese. J made sure I saved the recipe so we could make it again.

Today:
Tofu stir fry (no recipe, I just kind of throw stuff together)

Monday: Falafel with Tzatziki

I made the tzatziki today since it recommends making it a few hours in advance. We'll serve them with salads (possibly with the homemade flatbread from my last food blog since J really liked those)

I also need to make soup tomorrow. I'm still deciding between these two. It's supposed to rain most of this week, so soup will be nice.

    It sounds like you have some delicious meals planned. I need to start cooking more often. I get lazy because I live alone. but it is way better to cook healthy meals than to just nibble which is what I often end up doing...

    Let me know how your tziki turns out. Last time I made some it tasted good, but wasn't thick enough because of the water content of the cucumber.

And I vote you do the sweet potato, black bean chili. Looks very similar to the recipe I used and it's amazing. (I swapped out half the sweet potatoes and 1 of the cans of black beans for equal amount of diced chicken so that it had protein) Be ready to add some extra water, with mine, the sweet potatoes absorb lots of it and it ended up thicker than stew my first attempt (still delicious, second round was actually chili)

Exercise!

I decided to jump on the bandwagon and do the 30 day squat challenge. I've been working in more calisthenic exercises throughout the day and I figured this would be the perfect addition, especially with a beach trip coming up. I started yesterday on day 2 so that it would line up with the date.



I've also joined a group called Challenge Warriors on SP where I will be following an exercise schedule. I will be modifying that schedule slightly since I don't go to the gym very often (probably dropping our membership soon). It involves days with steady state cardio, intervals and then different days to work different muscle groups. I'm excited to join the challenge and really push myself further with exercise. I do well when I am in a group of people who are really motivating each other.
I was in a bodyrock challenge group last summer, and really liked sharing results and motivating each other in the group.

Plans for this weekend:
Today: Legs/shoulders/abs (including my squats :)
Saturday: run with J (will work in some intervals)
Sunday: Yoga video and probably abs

April Recap and May Goals

APRIL GOALS
*Continue 10 minutes of daily exercise streak. emoticon
*Download new music for ipod. emoticon
* Find new running routes, videos, workouts etc. emoticon emoticon
*Dedicate 45 minutes to abs each week emoticon
* 15 pushups per day (450 for the month). emoticon
* 15 squats per day (450 for the month). emoticon
*Dedicate time to eating each meal. Stop multitasking and just eat (no tv, work, computer etc). emoticon
*Track all food daily. emoticon
* MEAL PLANS!! emoticon emoticon

RESULTS:
Overall, I've done really well this month. Since I'm no longer following the half marathon training program, I've had a lot more time to try out other exercises. That being said, I've really neglected my running. I'd like to find a good balance of running 3x per week with other exercise mixed in. I have also continued my 10 minutes daily exercise streak! For some reason, I'm super proud of this. It really holds me accountable. Last week, I added other weekly exercises to the pushups and squats I'd been doing. My mom and sister had decided to do the exercises with me, but both already waned off. I'm still going strong with lunges, pushups, planks, ab reps and yoga and cardio minutes.
I haven't downloaded new music for my ipod. I'll admit that I've never downloaded a song before (yes, seriously haha) and J has been really busy finishing up the semester with school. So, new music after next week :) I also need to work on making time to eat. I'm still working while eating and eating in front of the tv as much as at the table emoticon I've done okay with meal planning. We've been planning 2 new recipes per week and I've been eating a normal dinner on nights when J is working instead of eating whatever.

MAY GOALS:
*Continue 10 minutes of daily exercise streak.
*Download new music for ipod.
*Dedicate time to eating each meal. Stop multitasking and just eat (no tv, work, computer etc).
*Really work on incorporating different types of exercise each week (running, videos, hiit)

quick update

The weekend went well. I've been within my calorie range since last Sunday every day except Saturday. So 7/8 days so far. This is a drastic improvement over the past month or so.

On Saturday, I got up at 7, did a 15 minute workout and then got my stuff together to head to northern VA. We picked up a friend in Richmond then headed to my dad's house. We all went to the shooting range and had a blast. J and our friend made some drinks at my dad's house before the show. My dad has a huge bar in his basement that rivals/surpasses a lot of public bars in relation to the variety and amount of alcohol (although he rarely drinks). My only downfall was candy. I turned down the drinks, but ate a lot of M&Ms. Like handfuls...

I'd never been to the Hamilton before and let me just say, it is AWESOME! It's set up like a comedy club with tables around a small stage and some standing room in the back. We went to see Les Claypool (lead singer/bassist from Primus). Once he came out, a lot of people went and stood right in front of the stage (including us). We're used to seeing him at a massive venue (music festival or other large venue), so being literally 5 feet away was crazy. It was set up like he was playing in your living room, talking to guests and really involving the crowd. It may be one of my top 5 favorite concerts ever.

I will admit that I had about 1 beer. J and our friend drank a ton, while I refilled maybe 1 inch of beer into my glass a few times over the course of 5 hours. 1 beer total is my conservative estimate. It was interesting to be sober when everyone else was drunk. It was a great perspective to see how loud and obnoxious people get when they've had a lot to drink. It really reinforced why I decided to stop drinking in the first place- because I was probably loud and obnoxious, but couldn't remember! I even got a ton of pictures that weren't blurry because I could hold still enough (without the flash).

I also woke up early enough to hang out with my dad for awhile before the guys woke up. We met friends for brunch at noon, so it was nice to have some time (as opposed to waking up at 11 and rushing around). I had a belgian waffle, which is totally bad for you, but I hadn't had one in like 5 years, so it was definitely savored. Still within calorie range for the day, although I was way under for protein and fiber for the day.

    yay! sometimes all you need is to know that you can do it. so glad you enjoyed yourself :) and from you last blog, I hope you don't back out of the Mother's Day winery thing...it sounds just lovely and I think you could enjoy it and be DD. just my opinion!
