October (so far) and plan for this week

Well I woke up at 7:40 this morning. That may sound early to some, but I am supposed to be at work by 7:30... Needless to say, I shot out of bed like a rocket, got ready and was out the door in 5 minutes. I was worried about being late because my boss freaks out easily, but one of my coworkers though we had the day off today and hasn't yet arrived, so that is probably my saving grace. Thanks Jay!

I want to do a recap and reflection of last week in terms of goals. Starting off with the good news first:
I KILLED IT with running last week! 17 miles total! I ran Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday. I also have some new music on my running mix, so I was excited to test it out on Friday.
I did pushups on 4 days, and abs on 3 days.
I also stayed within my calorie range on 6/7 days. I did not eat after 10pm on 6/7 days.

Not so good stuff:
I did not lift weights at home during the week.
I overate on Saturday. And over-drank. And overate. and over-drank some more. and overate and over-drank past 10pm.


I went to Taste of DC with a friend for her birthday. Now that we live so far apart, we don't get to hang out nearly as often as we used to. I didn't do too bad at the event (some yogurt, mac and cheese, a cupcake and 2 mini cannolis). Had I stopped munching there, I would have been fine for the day. After we got back to her house, we did some party prep. I ended up eating a lot of chips that night and more sweets! Like 5 cookies and the most monster sized piece of chocolate cake!
I'm not sure what happened to my brain... I did, however, manage to remember to switch up drinking wine and seltzer water so I didn't drink nearly as much as I could have. I think the fact that the party mainly took place in her kitchen was my downfall with the eating. and the whole "it's a party and I can do whatever I want" attitude I get sometimes.

I definitely feel "puffy" from all of my bad eating over the weekend. My plan was to get a run in yesterday, but I ended up staying at my friend's house until about 3. By the time I got home, I was getting my self ready for the week, showering, packing lunch, ironing, cleaning etc. It was also like 20 degrees colder outside than it was on Saturday, so my motivation was gone. So no run...

Plans for this week:
Today- Run 4 miles at the gym after work. Do 10 minutes of abs and do upper body machines
Tuesday: Run 3 miles in the park, pushups, do a SP video
Wednesday: abs and arms at home, pushups
Thursday: Attempt a 6 mile run,
Friday: 3 mile run, lower body machines
Weekend: Active rest day and a 5 mile run the other day

    How was Taste of DC? we went last year but didn't make it this year as it was our Williamsburg/camping weekend. Sorry about your puffy-ness, I'm sure it will come down in no time, sounds like you have a great plan.

Did you ever try out your ultimate playlist??

September Goals and New October Goals

September Goals:
-Run 4 miles without stopping
-Log 14 miles per week (walking or running)
- Make 1 new recipe per week
-Do bodyrock/loving fit exercise 3x per week
-Do 30 consecutive real pushups (no knees)

run 4 miles= Did it! And also ran 5 miles without stopping yesterday- a great way to end the month!
14 miles per week- Last week I did not complete the 14 miles. I did my 5 miler yesterday instead of on Saturday emoticon
1 new recipe per week- H and I have really been enjoying this one. We've done at least 1 new recipe, usually 2 new recipes per week.
3x per week bodyrock- I didn't even do 1 bodyrock all month. FAIL
30 pushups- I think I did 2 sets of pushups all month. FAIL

October Goals
-Run a 10k without stopping (6.2 miles)
-Log 14 miles per week (walking or running)
-Exercise outside at least 1x per week
-Do ab exercises for 10 minutes 3x per week
-Do pushups 3x per week, working up to 30 consecutive real pushups (no knees)
- Lift weights at home at least 1x per week
-Stay within calorie ranges 5 days per week
- No eating after 10pm (only because I know I'm not hungry, I'm just snacky)


This looks like a lot of goals, but a few of them are meant to get me back on track to where I had been 2 months ago.
I've been doing really well with my running (3,4 and 5 miles done in September!). My eating habits have been slipping lately. The new meals have been great, but I've been craving sweets a lot and eating just to eat instead of when I'm hungry. I think adding small amounts of exercises (abs, lifting weights and pushups) to my day will help combat the mindless eating.

    Those are some great goals chica! I love it! The eating after 10pm is something that I've been doing (but have been aiming for 8/9 since we don't stay up very late) and I feel so much better doing that! There's really something to not snacking before bed! A sparkfriend of mine, Rebecca, was saying she also does that and that she was reading a book about it.. I think it was bob harper that wrote it? -shrugs- was kind of thinking of looking into that =] I love that guy!

Anyway, you're doing a great job girl! Keep it up!!! And share those new recipes with us! I love seeing that kind of thing and getting ideas! =]

1. What is your favorite thing about this time of year?
Smell of fires, leaves and cold air. And leaves changing colors. And camping. I love fall!

2. What do you hope to do again before Summer is officially over?
Go camping (although summer is officially over now)

3. When did you last go on a hay ride?
When I was like 10

4. What is your favorite pumpkin dish?
Pumpkin seeds... I'm not really a pumpkin person...

5. Do you decorate your home for fall?
No. I don't like undecorating afterwards... We do have a Christmas tree, so we're not entirely un-festive

6. Do you have any hobbies that are seasonally specific? If so, what are they?
Not really, I try to get in a camping trip or 2 and do as many outdoor activities before I hibernate

7. Apple cider or hot chocolate?
Apple cider with spiced rum. Yum! But chocolate everything else

8. Are you a fan of football? If so, who is your team?
I'm a Redskins fan, so it's hard to stay excited...

9. Share a fond Fall memory.
We had our engagement pictures taken during a camping trip with my SIL, BIL and niece (SIL is a professional photographer). We did some hiking and got some awesome pictures. And great food and a huge fire. The guys ended up having an ax throwing contest, which was pretty funny. Too much testosterone...

10. It’s not Fall until…
I start wearing socks with my birkenstocks (yes, I know it's a fashion faux pas, but I do it anyways)

    Cute survey! I wish we had crisp , rainless falls here... if we did I would TOTALLY go camping around here too! The leaves changing colors is so beautiful.. but camping in the rain isn't really my idea of fun =p=p

And isn't it funny how foods like soups are such a fall thing?? Squash is another one! (although, squash IS in season during the fall, so that part makes sense =p) Anyway, I made chicken soup the other night, totally last minute and just happened to have everything, and it was DELICIOUS! Got me excited to do more soups with the cold weather coming! =]

Self sabotage!

1 week ago, we got home from our vacation. 1 week and 1 day ago is that last day that I got some actual exercise in (no counting walking after lunch...). What is wrong with me?? While on vacation, I over-drank and over-ate, but got in plenty of exercise and came back feeling pretty good about it. And now it's been a week. I've been eating more to fill the time spent lounging around and I have no energy. A double-edged sword- no energy to exercise, but it's because I haven't been exercising! I already feel a difference in my energy levels, the extra fluff around my body, and the extra pounds I've added (4 pounds!!). I know a lot it is water weight, but I feel like a slug right now!

Okay, mini-rant over.

Today, I have plans to meet my husband at the gym after work to do some strength training and a short run. We plan to run tomorrow at the park near our house. I need the extra motivation of having someone exercise with me to get me back into the game. I will no undo all of the hard work I've put in this year! I need to stick with my goals and get through the holidays while sticking to my plan.

Anyone else ever have a random off-week??

    Definitely had one of those weeks last week, as well! I did really great around my birthday, banking calories for the celebration splurges. But then I came back from my weekend in NYC, and it was all downhill from there. Just like you said, I'm tired and achy, so I don't want to exercise, but I'm tired and achy because I haven't been exercising!!!

I agree with FitMommy, it's bound to happen from time to time, and I decided the best thing to do was to just start over again this week, recommitting to choosing more whole foods and doing at least 10 minutes of fitness every day. If I can just get started, I always do more than 10 minutes. But sometimes, like last week, getting started is the hard part!

It is so great that you have your hubby to help get you moving. Now that I have a phone again, I feel like my running buddy is back, so I'm planning on going for a couple of runs this week myself. :)

    Of course, EVERYONE has those weekends! For sake of saving a ramble - here's the quote that reminds ME to never feel guilt over a bad few days or week!

It's so true! We are HUMAN, and as humans, we will all fail and self-sabotage sometimes! What matters the most is how you pick yourself up after said lull and keep on blasting away! I know you can do this girl! Especially with an awesome workout buddy of a hubby to help hold you accountable! =]

    we all have off-days, and weeks. I always tell myself, if you don't like something, change it! If I'm tired, go to bed early, dont complain you're tired. If you're feeling like a slug, get up and do something about it! (that wasn't meant to be too tough love if thats how it came across...) Keep telling yourself you will not undo all the work and you wont!

Vegas/ Grand Canyon (lots of pics!)

Seriously awesome vacation! We had always gone camping on our dating anniversary and this year decided to go to the Grand Canyon for our first wedding anniversary. Vegas is more exciting than Phoenix, so we decided to fly there and spend part of our time in Vegas and then drive to the Grand Canyon. We didn't gamble much and did a ton of walking around, saw the Bellagio fountain, lots of sightseeing (and people watching!), saw the Hoover Dam and went to a comedy show.

When we got to the Grand Canyon, we stayed at Mather Campground on the South Rim. We woke up at 5am to hit the trail bright and early. (btw- it is cold at the canyon rim and hot inside the canyon. This isn't explicitly stated enough, so pack accordingly!).

We hiked down the South Kaibab Trail to Bright Angel Campground ~7 miles. We also walked around a lot when we got there. Phantom Ranch is also down by the river and they had a little kitchen and store (= victory Tecate!). To beat the heat, we woke up at 4am to start the hike back up. We hiked up Bright Angel Trail for a change of scenery. Not gonna lie- kinda freaky hiking with a headlamp with a cliff next to the trail! The last 3.5 miles of the trail was brutal. Tons of switchbacks, not very much shade and total leg leg murder.
