Another 50K (trail run) done :)

Monday, July 30, 2012

Back from my weekend's adventures. It was a long, hot but mostly enjoyable summer Saturday on the trails in Clinton, MS for the Big Butts 50/100K.

I had the biggest butt out there, and was the last place finisher in the 50K (not sure of my time, a sloth slow 9 hours:50-something minutes), but that's all okay; I kept moving and having fun!

The course was a 6 mile looping Mtn bike trail with lots of quick turns and short, steep ups and downs. The biggest hill we had was maybe 15' but it was almost a complete vertical climb and there were at least 4-5 of those, followed by a downhill of the same type. There were only a few places that were kind of straight to where you could pick up some speed.

Lol...being short legged, i couldn't just hop up a couple of the steep inclines, but had to lean into the hill and reach for support with my hands as well. That's where I got muddy (and from one early slip on my ass, and one late in the game plop in the deepest part of a mud puddle up over my right shoe) Anyway, my white shirt did not stay that way.

There had been a lot of rain the day before, and for the first lap the trail was very muddy. It was also extremely humid, and my glasses kept fogging up which was quite annoying! Most (but not all) of the mud firmed up in the heat as the day went on, but the humidity stuck around. Think the heat index temp got up to about 105 degrees. Luckily, it was mostly shaded trails, and there weren't too many long stretches out in the sun; it was noticeably warmer when you hit certain spots though!

When I finished my first loop, I asked the woman keeping stats & time if I was in last place; she said no, there were a couple out behind me; I joked that I best slow down then or I wouldn't make my goal of being DFL. This got to be a "running joke", with her calling out on the next several laps "NO, you aren't last yet", but by the time I finished up-- I was in last place (the other folks hadn't passed me but had dropped out) Be careful what you ask for? :)

Another lol...if I'd been much slower, the woman who WON the 100K and I could have finished together; twice the distance only took her an hour longer than me. Only a slight exaggeration to say that she was half my weight and twice my pace... Impressive. And congenial every time she lapped me.

Official time: DFL at 9:50:44 a blistering average of 19:03 minute miles. Good enough hiking pace; let's call a spade a spade and a sloth a sloth...

few other notes:
Wore my Hokas again and did not pre-tape my feet. Got small blisters on the outside of both big toes, and did stop to attend to them after lap 4, but that was all. Think that was mostly a result of my feet sliding to the front in my shoes on the downhills; kind of wonder though if I could get by with a 9 instead of 9.5 in the Hokas and still have enough toe room? All in all though, have had much less blistering to worry about with these shoes.

Did not wear my calf sleeves (lol..wanted to show off more of my leg tattoos), and as a result had a bit more aches . Or maybe it was also because I didnt take any tylenol during the race? Still, wasn't too post-race sore or overly creaky the next day.

Even with the heat and humidy, felt ok on hydration and such. Using ice in my water bottle really was nice; kept my hands (holding the bottle) and the liquids cooler than otherwise. Was fine taking S-caps once every 90 minutes or so (seems to work better than more frequently for me).

Missed B fiercely! He's gone with and crewed me at every previous ultra I've done for the last two years, but his new job schedule got in the way this time. I mananged the road trip and race by myself, but I missed him.

Tremendous accomplishment!! Good for you. I'm terribly impressed. That is 10 times longer than a 5K which I consider a distance outing. WOW!!!

Whoa! I always enjoy reading about your Ultras. It's the finishing that counts unless you are doing IAU qualifiers...and I don't know if they exist! Great job and thanks for sharing!

M 3.5 mile run
T 3 mile walk
W Rain/rest day
TH 1.75 mile walk
F 2.5 mile warm up/ cool down walk 1 mile times run

Just wanted to see how fast I could push myself for a mile today.

That pace may not look like much, or really even mean much overall, but it's the fastest non-treadmill training time I've been able to manage in longer than I can remember.

grumbles about another low mood and low mile week. planning to gym tomorrow and do some elliptical miles, and then a longer outdoor run on Sunday. 50K trail event coming up in another week!

My nutrition has also been way off this week (well, more truthfully it's been more "on" as in overeating and eating stupidly as opposed to mindfully). Except I did have a couple really yummy garden fresh tomatoes!

Great speed! I love this time of year because of the fresh gaden veggies.
Try for more salads. It works for me!
I hope that you do well in your upcoming 5K! emoticon

Another low slow week, but that's ok

Monday, July 16, 2012

Only got in 4 work outs and a total of 28.5 miles last week, and 20 of those miles were at one go on Sunday!

I just seem to be stuck in this higher week/lower week pattern. Averages out ok, I guess, but a little more consistency might be nice.

My excuse for last week was the rain. I'm a real weather wuss. I don't really mind being out on a run and getting caught in the rain, but I am loathe to stick my toe out the door and start if it's already raining! Also had some allergies/sinus headache blahs. At least the rain knocked the temps down a few degrees.

Anyway, Sunday's long run was fun. I went up to Nashville and met up with a couple friends and got in some serious greenway miles. I wasn't real speedy (had some weird pain in my right back thigh/hip/butt-- sciatic nerve maybe?) but was okay if I kept it slow. So, it was mostly a walking not running effort for me.

However, my buddy Terri says I excell at powerwalking. :) That made me feel good. And isn't it much more positive to think of myself as a decent powerwalker than as a slow runner? There is something to be said for the power of perspecitve! :)

Was pretty creaky during the long workout and in the evening afterwards, but felt fine again today and got in a shorter but faster paced 3.5 miles this afternoon on my dinner break time.

I'm always jazzed when I read about your training and races! Speed is merely a number. Distance is totally awesome. DSSECRETS (DW) is a powerwalker. I can only walk so fast then I have to kick into a jog if I do a race with her. Lots of respect for powerwalkers here. And you doin' Ultras, wow, you have all my props! It's inspirational and motivational! Stay strong, Girl, and show 'em how it's done! I'm obviously a big fan!

Over 50 (and feeling good about it)

Sunday, July 08, 2012

10.4 miles.
One of those days you wish all days could be like!
Felt excellent with a decent pace throughout. Wore my favorite Saucony road shoes.
Warm (88 degrees) and humid but tolerable.
Explored a new street route, took Explorer Blvd past where I have previously turned around and discovered it actually makes a nice big loop.

That makes a total of 53.65 miles for the week! :)

activities and exercise

Saturday, July 07, 2012

M 7 mile run at Indian Creek Greenway; 2 mile walk
T 4.25 mile evening walk
W 9 miles at gym, 2 miles on Arc trainer; & 7 miles on elliptical machine
Th 16 miles run/hike on Monte Sano State Park trails
F 2.5 mile walk
S 2.5 mile walk

PLAN (and hopefully since I'm saying it here beforehand, I'll actually follow through and do it) to get out for 8 miles running tomorrow morning so I can bump this week up to past 50 miles total. A very mixed bag of pedestrianism, with lots of walking, hiking, gym and running, but it still ALL counts, right?

Weather has been beastly with highs in the 90's (and a couple days up over 100 degrees) for over a week now.

Also trying to plan and get together with a few friends for a run in Nashville next weekend; it will be fun, if everyone's schedules can coordinate!

Yes, it all counts. A 50+ mile week is impressive, indeed. You should be very, very proud of yourself.
