An Experiment in Ayurvedic Diet

This past week's lecture was on the Ayurvedic way of eating and there were several ideas that made sense and I'm going to try out. One is to eat only three meals per day. According to the lecture here is no other culture that eats 5-6 small meals a day. The concept is this: Eat enough at breakfast to get you through to lunch and then eat enough at lunch to get you through to dinner. Lunch is the largest meal of the day and dinner is a supplemental meal, which is the smallest meal of the day. Talk about a switch! So today I had my normal smoothie for breakfast and added some Buckwheat cereal with almond milk and a banana. The entire meal added up to 701 calories! Okay - let's see how this works. I'm a little skeptical, but I'm very satisfied and really don't want anything else to eat so this could work.

The other concept is to drink hot water only all day for two weeks. Nothing in it - just plain old hot water. You're supposed to boil the water for 10 minutes to boil off all the minerals so your tissues are getting only pure water. I haven't gotten there yet but I did give up all sweets for Lent to try to cut out sugar and this just gives me more motivation to keep it up. I'm going to try the three meals a day first and the hot water will come next. Baby steps here people!

Anyway, I hope everyone is having a great weekend! Tomorrow is my last day off in a row from my vacation and I'm rested and ready to go. I get to see the orthopedic doctor about my torn meniscus and then it's back to work on Tuesday. I'm ready!

    Hope it goes well. I learned a long time ago that a good breakfast keeps me from snacking later in the day. Before my MIL moved in, we were eating our main meal at lunch and I really liked doing that. Can't now, but I'm sure it'll work for you.

If you can't take the hot water, you could always try a white tea, steeped just for a minute. : )

    Change is good, and I think it's a worthy experiment. You're going Ayurvedic, I'm going wheat-free -- as long as it's healthy, let's see what works! :)

    I know this works for some and I remember the "don't eat it will spoil your dinner" warnings from my mother. However, I'm a breakfast, light lunch and 2 afternoon snacks then dinner person. Over 3 years in maintenance now, so I'll have to go along with the "if it ain't broke" mentality.
I fully support each person checking out all possibilities to find the right solution for him/herself.

Closer to Real Coaching!

I'm starting to get really excited about April and being able to really start seeing clients! I know I will be a great Health Coach and it's really exciting that we're getting closer. I can coach anyone from anywhere. Over the phone, in person, via Skype (if I can ever get it downloaded on my computer but that's another story). I can do Health Histories any time so if anyone is interested in that, it's free and is just a getting to know you session. Let me know!

Of course, it's really scary too! I have to choose a credit card service so I can accept credit cards so it's becoming more and more real. Ack!

I'm still learning a lot and now am thinking about going on after I get my Health Coaching certification for either becoming a personal trainer or massage therapist. Who knows! I'm growing!

Not Much To Say

I guess winter is a REALLY boring time for me! I haven't felt like blogging about anything because it's just the same thing over and over again. I LOVE my new lectures every week but we don't have new ones tomorrow due to MLK day so I'm bummed. Took my first test and entered my three health histories that we are supposed to do by February so I'm good there! Ordered and got my new business cards and finally figured out how to edit the brochure IIN gave us so I'm good there! Now I have to figure out what I want to do for printing them and get that settled. Have to register my business soon - I'm a little at a loss about that but will learn. Hmmmm......what else......

My coworker who has emotional issues has been out of work for 6 weeks and we have been largely okay and the mood has been better there, so my stress level is down. That's AWESOME! Hope she's getting her issues taken care of so she can come back stronger and happier.

I'm learning more and more every week about nutrition and what it is to be a Health Coach and decided I am going to offer an "in school" discount on my program when I can start seeing clients in April and I can't wait to get started! Part of me is really ready and part of me is really worried about getting clients but it's something I'm incredibly passionate about so I really think I will be fine. The extra income will be awesome for my family.

Anyway, hope everyone is having a great weekend. This is a really boring blog but at least I'm here! Happy Sparking!

    Honestly that is what it boils down to....you have to want it and be willing to make the changes to accomplish it. That is why I love SP because they don't push their site as a diet site rather it is lifestyle change site, offering so many resources on how to accomplish this and, most importantly, how to maintain it!

    I'm also a WW "dropout". I find the whole points system rather puzzling; if you're going to track your food, why not know the real nutritional values (calories, fat content, carbs, protein. etc)?

Bodybugg vs. Fitbit

I got my Fitbit a few days ago and have had my Bodybugg for a year. I have been wearing both of them for almost a week and my subscription for the Bodybugg website expires tomorrow. I got the Fitbit specifically for the link to SparkPeople but there is a HUGE discrepancy between the two. Today my Fitbit says I have 3800 steps and the Bodybugg says 5700. The fitbit says I've burned 1839 calories and the Bodybugg says I've burned 2300. So what do I believe? The Bodybugg has the sensors that attach directly to your skin so I'm thinking it's more accurate but still not sure. I guess I'll go with the Fitbit and see how it goes. I absolutely love the auto sync with the Fitbit and love that I can attach it to my bra and it won't give me a rash on my skin so it definitely has its advantages. I think the Fitbit may actually motivate me to challenge myself with the awards and such and inspire me to move more every day. I think it will take a bit of an adjustment and I can always reactivate my Bodybugg subscription so we'll see what happens. Hope everyone had a VERY Merry Christmas!

    I had much higher calories burned readings on my GoWear Fit than I do on my Fitbit, and I suspect the Fitbit is less accurate in that regard (though I also think, looking at info from both devices and my own weight trends, that the GWF was overestimating for me). But my steps are higher on Fitbit, and i think they're closer to me actual steps. I like that the fitbit is small and can be tucked away, and that there's no monthly fee. After a couple of years of the arm band I was ready for something discreet! As someone else said, it's more the trends that matter, really.

    Fitbit has served as a motivator for me...working for more steps...get me climbing stairs daily...and so far, I have worked up to and through the 75 flights in a day challenge. Being precise would be wonderful, but really, the trends your activities show are more important...too many days sitting? Not sleeping enough (this is where my big eye opener was...very different sleep pattern that what I had perceived!)? you can see the trends and correct or improve them in your tracking..even if the figures are not absolutely precise. I have been wearing a Fitbit for 6 months now. Discreet and convenient also are good motivators for me to keep wearing it!

    Many of my northern Virginia Spark friends wear BodyBuggs, but I hate the whole idea of wearing a big contraption on my arm all the time, calling attention to my big batwings, so the discreet Fitbit is more my style. Glad you are finding what works for you.

    I have a Go Wear Fit (similar to the Body Bugg) and a Fitbit. When I wore both, they were off some, but not nearly as much as the results you got. The Fitbit is easier to wear and it's free to use so I like that.
