One Week to Go!

Sunday, September 16, 2012

One week from today I will be DONE with my 50 mile MS Challenge Walk. I can't wait and yet I'm fine with it being a few days away. I walked my 8 miles yesterday and 10 miles today (10.6 actually but that's my husband's fault for wanting to go a certain way since he came with me and it's his birthday). Anyway, It felt EXHAUSTING! I did a Bob Harper Kettlebell workout on Friday and had no idea there would be so many lunges passing the 15 pound kettlebell under each leg as we lunged so my hamstrings are SCREAMING at me today. Oh - they were yesterday, too. And the day before. It actually hurts to sit down. Ugh.

This week I have a rest day tomorrow and then only 3 miles each on Tuesday and Wednesday, another rest day (and travel day) Thursday and then 20 miles Friday, 20 miles Saturday and 10 miles on Sunday. Then I have off the following Monday since I figure I won't be able to move that day. I'll probably take a few days off of working out depending on how I feel and then I can move onto something different since I'm REALLY tired of walking.

It has been an amazing journey, though. I NEVER thought I could walk more than 3-4 miles but I've proved to myself that I can do at least 18 at one time (so far) and still survive. I've seen a lot of my city close up with my walking and found many beautiful (and not so beautiful) houses and neighborhoods that I've driven past all my life and really never noticed. I've spent quality time with my husband, sister and youngest son during our walks together, found out that I can walk a 17 minute mile by myself, and gone through many times where I thought I couldn't walk another step, yet persevered and realized I could.

I've found out that as of today, I've walked 402 miles so far total! WOW! That's a HUGE amount! More than I would have ever thought I would do!

I see the podiatrist tomorrow about my toe to see what to do. It hurts a lot after activity (like tonight) but gets a lot better with rest (go figure) so we'll see what she says.

Anyway, I'll keep everyone posted after the walk and the podiatrist appointment. Hope everyone had a great weekend!

    You are amazing.

I just learned this week that I can actually run intervals again as long as I have my foot taped. I messed up my plantar fascia back in January and haven't been able to run at all. I hope the doc gets you straightened out and you aren't 9 months getting back on track.

18 Mile Walk - CHECK!

Saturday, August 18, 2012

Got my 18 miles in today! Did a little at my youngest son's football practice. Had to use the bathroom and they don't have a port-a-potty there so I walked the half mile to the park bathroom and back and then around the school. - 1.67 miles done then. Rested for a while and then when we got back from practice, Paul and I walked to Subway for lunch (about .75 miles) - got to 2.6 miles or so. DH got home from Evan's football scrimmage and came to pick up Paul since he insisted on wearing his football pants and cleats and of course was chafing after a 3 hour practice so he was happy to have a ride home.

So I took off from there. Walked all over the place on this side of town. Got to about 11 miles and stopped at home for a break and a snack since I needed more water. Walked down the hill and did the loop around the river 3 times and I was at 17 miles when I got back up the hill.

There were a few times where I started getting REALLY sore and really wanted to stop walking but that famous stubbornness kicked in, I gritted my teeth, drank some more water and kept walking. I had a dinner date with two of my awesome Spark Friends, SCOUTMOM715 and ROCKINMOM77 and one of Tennille's friends so I had to be home by 6:30 at the latest.

I made it! The entire 18 miles! And MAN am I ever feeling it right now! OUCH! Went to dinner and had an AWESOME time! Now I'm home and cramping up like crazy. Gonna have to try to get up soon and take some Ibuprofen.

Anyway, except for that 3/4 mile with DS, I did the entire thing by myself! I rock. Now wish me luck on my second fundraiser tomorrow! Thinking about putting a sign near the intersection by the Expo center where they're having the Dirty Girl Mud Run (day 2) so we can maybe get some traffic that way. Hope we raise lots of money! Have a great weekend everyone!

Ready for a Change-A Bit Whiny.....

Friday, August 17, 2012

Did you know that 18 weeks of training for a 50 mile walk is a LONGGGGGGGG time????? I've been doing this training now for about 14-15 weeks and I'm ready to get this walk over with and get the variety back into my workouts! I haven't made it to Tae Kwon Do for a long time and when I did make it, it was only for a couple of classes. I really wanted to test in September (the week after my walk) for my next level of black belt but with the walking 4-5 days a week and three kids in stuff it just hasn't happened. And I'm getting annoyed.

I LOVE my TKD classes and miss my dozens of DVD workout videos that give me so much variety. I miss strength training but walking a minimum of 4 miles and now getting up to 5 and 6 miles in a week along with up to 18-20 miles on a weekend day, it takes SOOOOO much time!

I am totally committed to this walk - don't get me wrong - but I'm getting bored since my walking partner stopped walking with me a long time ago. It's just not the same when you're doing it by yourself. Don't get me wrong - sometimes I LIKE being by myself but I'm just getting bored.

Anyway, I'm just whining and will get over it so don't worry about me. I did start running and was doing quite well doing run/walk intervals where I would run for 1-2 minutes and then walk for 1-2 minutes but when I started the third week of the Couch to 5K and it required me to run for 3 minutes. I couldn't do it. I just get to a certain point when I have to stop. I can do it on the treadmill - but not outside. I got discouraged and stopped running. Haven't run since.

Boy, this is a whiny blog! Anyway, I'm looking forward to meet two of my Spark Friends who will be in town for the Dirty Girl Mud Run tomorrow! After I take my youngest to football practice, somehow get the house partly cleaned and walk 15.5 miles before 7 p.m. Wish me luck!

I admire you for your determination to stick with your walking training, especially since you are doing it alone now. Honestly, I probably would have given up already.

I can totally see why you are getting bored with walking being your main form of exercise and frustrated that it takes so long. That's originally what started me with the walk/run intervals, but I've never tried to do them outside... only on a treadmill. I hear that running outside is much more difficult.

Hang in there... you'll be done soon.

I think you are doing amazing Chris. Just wondering if you change your routes when doing your walking, so that it doesn't get boring or have you added any new songs to your playlist? I can imagine the long walks on the weekends can get hard doing by yourself, just hang in there. I can totally relate on the running. Running on uneven ground is harder than running on the treadmill. Can't wait to see you tomorrow!! emoticon emoticon

Good luck! You ARE whiny! No...just kidding. We all feel this way sometimes. I was like that this morning...like a little kid stomping his feet and saying "I don't wanna..." We all have to deal with that little kid inside of us sometimes. Are you listening to anything good while you're walking? Are you walking in different settings? Those two things come to mind as maybe good solutions to help you get through some feelings of boredom with the mileage. Push through it... emoticon You are so close! You're gonna get there. Just keep moving forward! You can do it! emoticon Keep up the good work! Thanks for the encouragement! Spark on! emoticon

This is Why I'm Successful

Sunday, August 05, 2012

It's called good old-fashioned German stubbornness. Don't have a walking partner? Fine. I'll walk by myself. Nobody to go to the gym to motivate me? Hubby tired and sitting in front of the TV? Kids all too good to spend time with me? Fine. I'll work out by myself. Nobody wants to go to Tae Kwon Do with me anymore? Fine. I'll go by myself, get my black belt and continue going by myself because I like it. So there.

Today I had a 16 mile walk on my MS Challenge Walk training schedule. My sister didn't want to go. She doesn't walk at all anymore with me. Fine. I went by myself. Got up at 7, got dressed, brushed my teeth and hair, ate breakfast and then was off. Just me and my iPod. And it was nice! Walked where I wanted to with my NIke Running app telling me how far I had gone. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that app! Good think my iPod lasted the entire time!

Did about a 5.3 mile loop and ended up back at home to refill my water bottle. Ken wasn't ready to go yet (he said he'd walk part of it with me) so I was off again. Went down the hill and around the river 3 times (1.7 miles each loop). Came up the hill toward home and was at about 11.6 miles at that point right around 12:00.

Fueled up with another Herbalife smoothie, filled up with water again, and then Ken was ready to go with me. My youngest, Paul, wanted to go too. We put both dogs on the leashes (they REALLY wanted me to take them both times I left before that!) and we were off.

By that time, my average time per mile was about 17 minutes 20 seconds. I guess I rested a bit too long because those last few miles were a KILLER! My hips hurt, my legs hurt, my feet hurt and I was tired. MAN was I tired! But I kept plodding along. During the last mile I decided I was going to just get home and started walking faster. I was REALLY glad when we got home and it was almost exactly 16 miles. (16.09 to be exact).

Drank a protein drink and took a shower and it felt awesome to be clean! :) I rested for a couple of hours and then was getting pretty stiff so I made my hubby take me to Texas Roadhouse for dinner since I was craving a steak.

Got there and had ONE roll with NO butter and a few peanuts before we ordered. Said no to more bread and had a garden salad (no croutons or egg) with the dressing on the side. I ordered the 6 oz. sirloin and Ken ordered the BBQ Chicken breast and we split each of our meat entrees in half and shared them. I had a side of broccoli instead of potato. So proud of myself! :) Then we went to Target for a few things and swung by McDonald's for a 49 cent vanilla cone.

Now home and doing laundry. I still have off tomorrow since it's my 4-day weekend so Ken took off and we're going to State Fair. Hope everyone had a great weekend and now I'm giving my stubborn German butt a rest on the couch for the evening.

It's very inspiring to me that you're always exercising, and that you're doing this major walk for MS. That's an important cause to me as well, so perhaps I'll be doing this next year....I think I'd need a dog as a walking partner. My husband isn't up to it physically, and my son IS, but he is already overextended with athletic activity.

Sometimes You Just Have to Rest

Friday, July 27, 2012

I had every intention of walking for 5 days this week. In my walking program I'm now in the part where there is a 4 day week and then a 5 day week and they alternate. The past two 5 day weeks I have only gotten in 4 days. This week was going to be different. I was supposed to rest last night but we have an event to go to tomorrow and we're working the Brewer game on Sunday so my long 12 mile walk has to be in the morning tomorrow. I was going to go to the state park with my friend at about 8 a.m. but we have to be at the event by 2 and I'd need to shower and we want to leave by 12:30 at the latest. The 12 mile walk took us 3 hours and 40 minutes last time so we won't have that kind of time.

My knee was sore after the 14 mile hike last Sunday but not too bad. I was able to do my run/walk intervals on Tuesday and then the walk on Wednesday just sucked because it was too hot/humid out. Last night I walked 3 miles and it was fine. I gave blood at work yesterday so I'm a little more tired today - no biggie.

I have this baker's cyst in my knee at the back and it feels like it's interfering with the movement of a tendon and the tendon is scraping back and forth in and out of place across it. In the mornings when I stretch upon waking up it has been popping/cracking a bit but not too bad. Well this morning I woke up and stretched my legs. I felt a pop and then my knee started to hurt. It's been a little swollen (where I can FEEL it but not really see it) all day and feels like I can't QUITE straighten it all the way. I came home and sat on some ice, intending to rest for a bit and then do an upper body workout.

Well, I fell asleep on the couch! My body is obviously telling me I need to rest so I am. Sitting my butt on the couch all night and drinking water instead of snacking like a fool! (That is why I exercise at night - so I have something to DO instead of eat!) Anyway, still texting with my friend as to whether we're going REALLY early at 6 a.m. or something or if I'm walking close to home. I'll update later. Have to check out when the park gates open!

Have a great weekend everyone!
