This walking journey has been a hard and fun one so far. I still have a few weeks to go but the walking just goes higher from here so it will definitely be a challenge. Thus, the name - MS Challenge Walk! Hee hee!
Yesterday my sister couldn't go with me so I found a friend who has a park pass to a state park nearby that has a TON of hills! Many of the trails are very hilly and hard to navigate but we had no problem getting around and that felt awesome! I actually had LESS muscle soreness as soon and I really think the changing terrain, though difficult to navigate, helped with that since you have to use different muscles to go uphill, downhill and on a flat surface.
We started out going down the stairs from the observation tower (about 200 stairs I think) and went on some really difficult trails at first. Then we went on the Ice Age trail to get something flatter but it really wasn't flatter - it was full of stones and got pretty thin when we decided to turn back. Got back to the tower and went up the stairs again. We went down another trail that was pretty short (only .5 miles) so we turned back and went on the Ice Age Trail the other way. That was more flat even though it still had some hills but a lot less rocky than it was the other way. Eventually we turned back again and got back to the tower but we were only at about 10 miles.
We decided to go down the .5 mile trail and then went down a dead end street for about a mile and then came back but it was REALLY uphill the entire way back! By that time we were around 12 miles and really starting to feel sore. We walked around the parking lot since everywhere we went it would be downhill and we'd have to end it uphill again and we needed a flat surface to go on for a while!
Eventually we went down another trail for a bit but it was really hard on my knee to walk down the hill. On the way back uphill though, it was MUCH better on my muscles and joints so that felt good. Eventually we went back down that 0.5 mile trail for a bit and ended up at the parking lot and walked around a bit again to get to the 14 miles. MAN that last 2 miles were a killer! I only hope this training really helps me since I'm sore today and when we get to the walk it's 50 miles over 3 days so I'm sure I'll be sore for a week afterward!
Anyway, this is just an update but I really think that was my favorite walk yet! I will definitely go back there for longer walks and my friend is up to going along again with my sister when she feels better.
I've been thinking about doing some sort of workout today, too, since I have off work, but I'm really sore so I think this will have to be my rest day this week. Starting next week (I think) there are various 5 mile walks during the week (previously 4 was the longest) so it will only get harder from here. But I"m up for the challenge! Everyone have a great week!

I did SO great this week for four days and was really looking forward to a good weigh in. I was at 154.8 on Friday morning and did GREAT on the eating front. Then at 10:36 p.m., just as I was getting ready to walk upstairs and get ready for bed, my sister called asking me to go to Denny's with her, my BIL, my mom and two of her daughters. I SHOULD have said no, but my mom never gets to go out (she has MS and is homebound unless a bus is running or we have a lift van. My sister got the van so my mom could go to the County Fair and watch my niece sing with Foreigner - yes, the real band, Foreigner!) so I said I would go. Got coffee and water and was all set. We don't have much money this week so I could resist any cravings until my mom offered to buy me nachos (which I said I wanted). So I said yes, as long as someone would share them with me. But my niece only had a couple of chips and I ended up eating the whole half order. Ugh! So dumb! Okay - up to 157.8 yesterday. Grrrr........
So I was determined to eat better yesterday. Had a smoothie for breakfast and then went to the farmer's market. Got a tiny cupcake since it was espresso and I wanted to try it. No big deal. Got some kettle corn and did NOT open the bag. It's still full and sitting on the counter. Got some AWESOME tomatoes and some spicy lettuce mix and I'm looking forward to having that for salads this week. Yummy!
Then we went to the fair. I brought along my own snacks (2 fiber one 90 calories pretzel bar, some almonds and 1 fiber one brownie), some Special K protein water packets, and my own lunch. Herbalife smoothie powder and a shaker cup. That totally satisfied me at 3:30 when we finally had lunch. I was fine. Had a couple of tiny bites of Paul's funnel cake and 1/4 of a cream puff just to have a couple of tasty treats but not overdo it. Also had a banana from one of the booths. Not bad.
Came home with 2 extra kids (the boys had two friends they wanted to sleep over) and had to find something to feed them for dinner. Took out the 4 frozen pizzas and made them but I thought I was being smart by having a huge salad for dinner since I needed more veggies for the day. Did just fine until the third pizza came out and it had been about 45 minutes since my salad. The smell kept calling to me and my stomach was still a little hungry. I tried to resist so badly but I just couldn't resist that stupid pizza! I thought the kids would eat it all and I would be fine but they didn't and I had several pieces. Grrrrr!!!!!
Now this morning, 159.1. So mad at myself! Now it will take me two weeks to get back to 154.8! Mad, but this has been my life for the past year so I am sort of feeling like I'll never meet my goal. Who knows. We'll see what the day holds.
14 mile hike on the agenda later in the day and laundry and lunch with my mom. (I'm having a chicken salad!). Hope everyone's weekend is going great!

So I've been having some tingling in my neck that goes down the center of my neck, across my shoulders and down the sides of my back periodically. It started once when I woke up with it at night and it really hurts but subsides after a bit. I finally got it checked out today along with my knee, which has been feeling like something is moving around in the outside back part of my knee. It hurt for a while but since I got better shoes and have kept up with my walking it has gotten better.
The verdict: my goal weight of 145 sounds good to my doctor, so now I need to get a bit more serious since I've been at 155-166 since last July. This morning I was at 154.8, so that's AWESOME and I hope to keep up with that trend so wish me luck! My walking program leaves me a lot less hungry than when I was doing more intense videos such as P90X so that has really helped me eat less.
My neck has a Cervical Paraspinal Muscle Spasm and she suggested physical therapy where they can do some ultrasound and massage to help it out. She thinks it's a muscle spasm pressing on a nerve so I'm hopeful this helps. I do agree, since the right side of my neck is ALWAYS sore and tight (probably from being on the phone for 13 years for work) and a muscle relaxer helped once before so she refilled that and I'll get that later today.
For my knee, she thinks she feels a Baker's cyst in there and it may be in the way of some of the tendons and such in there, which is why I feel like something is moving around in there and the pain has really subsided now that I've been making sure to use my really good running shoes for walking. And there isn't a problem with me continuing my walking program. YAY!
Anyway, I'm glad that there isn't anything seriously wrong and I'm looking forward to starting physical therapy to see if that helps. Hope everyone has a great weekend! :)

Yesterday was a great day for the most part. Got up early (7 a.m. - not TOO early), ate my Herbalife smoothie for breakfast and hit the gym with my sister. We did walk/run intervals on the treadmill for an hour and it felt great! 9:30 a.m. and I was done with my workout and on my way home. Yay! Then I got to take a shower and relax a bit before cleaning the house for the boys' birthday party. It wasn't too dirty, so it was just cleaning a bit and organizing. Getting food ready, etc. A coworker came over to visit with her grandson and another coworker was on the way to look at the PartyLite stuff in my basement since It's still all set up down there and random people have been over to buy stuff and donate for my walk fundraising.
Just when the second coworker got there, my first coworker got a phone call from her sister that her brother was found dead in his bed. She's the one whose sister just died 4 weeks ago yesterday! I felt SO bad for her! The poor baby started crying so we stole his pacifier from his grandma and I took over and put him to sleep while she was making her calls to her daughters outside, etc. The other coworker went down and was looking at stuff while we were waiting for her to do what she needed to do. It wouldn't have been too awkward but my mom and Ken's brother and sister were here, so I felt bad that they felt weird but you can't control when you get a call like that so we rolled with it.
She ended up leaving (which we expected) and the other coworker left and we went on with the party. We didn't want to do burgers and brats like we ALWAYS do so I suggested Barbecued chicken and the kids like that idea so we went with it. I made a salad and some fruit and my sister brought more fruit, Ken's sister brought a veggie tray, Ken's mom and dad brought some cheesy potatoes and an ice cream cake and my mom brought her famous shrimp salad but she didn't have shrimp so we put canned chicken in it and it still tasted good. I did have some wine but didn't have too many snacks (except for a few pretzel crisps) and only had ONE helping of everything I wanted (which is big for me since my family and Ken's family are all big on second helpings). I DID have two pieces of ice cream cake, but only the vanilla ice cream part since I'm not too fond of chocolate so that added up to one piece.
Today my sister and I are walking 10 miles but we haven't decided where we're walking so I'll be mapping some possibilities shortly. She needs to get new shoes, though, and the store is only open 12-4 so we have to walk later than we normally would.
Then I have to get taco meat ready for our third coworker's birthday celebration tomorrow so I'd better get my butt in gear.
Hope everyone's weekend is going great!

Last week was Girl Scout Day Camp. My daughter has been going to Day Camp for 8 years (including this past week) and this was my 7th year as a five day volunteer. Most of the time I was the Unit Leader for her group but sometimes I would do other things. This time, she was a PA (Program Assistant) at the Games station so she was responsible for helping run the station and teaching the girls (and brothers under 13) games and such. Our day camp is the largest all volunteer run day camp in the entire country and it is VERY well run. There are a lot of stations and they learn a LOT of outdoor things such as Lost (survival such as shelter, how to start fires, using knives, fire safety, knots, first aid, etc.), Nature (hikes and making lists of things in nature, etc.) Outdoor cook (they make their lunch one day), Swimming (in the pond for the younger kids) and Canoe (for going into 4th grade and up), Archery (going into 5th grade and up), Songs (Girl Scout songs), Lacing, Games, Craft, Leather, Theater and an Obstacle Course (for the girls going into 7th grade to start learning how to be a PA - they run the station half the time and travel the other half). I think I got them all!
Anyway, they have lots of fun and everything is outside so we were outside ALLLLLLLLL week! Every day! Monday and Tuesday weren't that bad, Wednesday was hot but bearable, Thursday was HOT and HUMID and unbearable most of the day, including the morning) and Friday was still hot but not as humid, though at the end of the week still not fun. I got to help run the Trading Post (where you can purchase supplies they need for camp such as bandanas, swim caps, t-shirts, water bottles, etc.). That was in the air conditioned building and it was pretty fun. Then Wednesday and Thursday I was with the 4-7th grade boys and Friday I was with the 1st-3rd grade boys.
We were ALL tired, hot and cranky by Friday and then we went camping with Paul's (younger son) Cub Scout Pack for the weekend. Yesterday they had lunch and the Raingutter Regatta and then when we were all overheated and starting to get dehydrated we trekked down to the lake and swam and sat in the shade.
DH and I did my 4 mile walk last night around 7:30 so it wasn't nearly as hot. Friday I was supposed to walk 3 miles but we got home from camp, went to dinner, and then went to the campground when it was almost dark so I didn't get that walk in. But I figured we walked a lot at camp so I was fine. I actually took THREE rest days this week but I don't think I could have worked out more since it was so physically draining being outside and I had walked my 4 miles Tuesday and Wednesday so I figure I'm still on track and doing fine. My sister and I are going to do our 8 miles in about an hour.
Anyway, it's back to work tomorrow and I work Monday, Tuesday and Thursday this week with the July 4th holiday so it will be nice to come back to a 3 day week. Have a great Holiday week everyone!
