TEN Mile Walk - What a Journey!

I've been following my training program for the MS Challenge Walk pretty religiously, not missing a day to walk during the week - just maybe doing it on a Tuesday instead of Wednesday or something like that. Today we had a 10 mile walk to do. I waited for my sister to get home from spending the night at her friend's house about 50 miles away and she came over. I had mapped out a route and when I was trying to figure out where to go it was REALLY starting to seem like a LONGGGGGGG walk! What really seems like far away in town really ISN'T.

So she came over and we left at 2:41 p.m. Walked from my house, down the hill and around the river. My plan was to go partway around the river and go around another part of town, do a loop, come back and finish the rest of the river and then go up toward my sister's house and do a huge loop up there. But we decided to do 2 extra loops around the river instead of the loop up by her house and we estimated the distance coming home.

When we had done 2.5 laps around the river we went up toward the big loop across town - UPHILL most of the first half of the loop. We were doing just fine. And then we got to the top of the hill by the high school and we hit the WALL. We started slowing down and stretching a bit and started getting sore. Rounded the corner and starting going back, most of it downhill (YAY!) but that changed the way we were walking and it was painful! We did bring snacks and some Special K protein water powder to keep up our blood sugar so that helped.

Got back to the river and decided to go the long way around. We got to the bridge and her husband called her. She told him she'd be home in around 25 minutes (we had about a mile to go) and he said, "More like 45 minutes." She said, "We'll see who's closer," and hung up. When she told me what he said, I said, "It's on! He just threw it down. Let's go!" So we started walking a lot faster and we KNEW we could do another mile. We had just done 9 so what was one more? We had one LAST hill up to my house and started groaning! My knee was hurting, her hip was hurting, yet we still walked on. Got to my house in 23 minutes, groaning all the way! But we did it!

So, since I'm sassy, I sent her DH a text that said, "You suck. We win. She's leaving my house now. Ouch." (hee hee!) So he sent me a text back that said, "It was in fact less than 25 minutes! Yeay! Eat... Food... Now..."

Anyway, we had a good time walking together and I'm glad we're following the walking program since that is only HALF the distance of ONE day (20 miles for the first day, 20 miles for the second day, and 10 miles for the third day)! We would have been in for a HUGE surprise if we hadn't started this program!

So this week is Girl Scout Day Camp, and also walking 4 miles Tuesday, 4 miles Wednesday, 3 miles Friday, 4 miles Saturday and 8 miles Sunday. Have a great week everyone!

    Impressive! I tried hiking 10 miles with my son, but he wimped out at 7 miles. Thought I was doing really good, but my toenails were sore after. Must have been banging on the inside of my shoes!

Fundraiser was not very successful....

I've spent the last two days cleaning like a madwoman (with DH helping a LOT!) and baking last minute stuff for the bake sale. We brought out all of the PartyLite product and sent a few Facebook reminders out preparing for the day. I knew my mom was coming and my sister said she would stop by. I had 8 people attending according to Facebook but I knew one person wouldn't be able to come because there was Black Belt testing today. I never know what's going to happen since it's a Saturday in summer and it's nice outside. There is a church festival and a Hispanic festival going on in town, too.

Got everything set and the kids set up outside with the bake sale items. I figured they would at least get some foot traffic from the neighborhood people walking/driving by. They sold some stuff and my youngest was in his glory being the "boss" of the bake sale.

My mom came and bought a couple of things and then we sat. And we sat. And we sat some more. Then one friend came and got a bunch of products for $40. YAY! She always comes to my open houses/parties and I appreciate her. :) My mom texted my niece who just got married and she and my sister came over. I didn't expect my sister to get anything because she needs to raise her own money for the walk. :) So I let my niece get a bunch of stuff but made her donate $5 to the fundraiser. Hee hee! She was adorable when I gave her three boxes of stuff - one of them full of candles. She said she couldn't decide so I just gave her all of the ones she said she really liked. She's moving sometime this summer to Alaska and they will be setting up their new apartment so I figured she could keep warm with some candles. :)

The kids got bored of the bake sale and nobody else came. Total money raised.......wait for it........$70! Oh wait! My mom said she wanted to donate another $10 so she'll give it to me later. And SHE is the one with MS!

I'm so grateful for my family and I fully realize that there were a LOT of other things going on today but still a little sad about the bad turnout.

Good thing today was my rest day! Since I torched a bunch of calories cleaning and making snacks.

Tomorrow's schedule is to walk 10 miles so my sister and I are going to walk but she's staying overnight about 50 miles away and isn't sure what time she'll get home so we'll see what time we go. I figure it will take us about 2.5-3 hours so I don't want to walk much later than 4:00 since we start Girl Scout Day Camp on Monday for 5 days of fun and sun.

    Hindsight being 20/20 (of course), it occurred to me just now how well your bake sale would have gone over at black belt testing. (There were NO snacks/refreshments available -- not even a vending machine.) You should ask our head instructor if you can do a water bottle/bake sale at the next color belt testing!

Walk Training Progress

The last three weeks have been a challenge and also a great change for me. I LOVE walking outside in the spring and summer! This week it was 4 miles Tuesday, 4 miles Thursday (which I did yesterday in two 2-mile increments due to time constraints this week), 3 miles today (DONE!) and 6 miles tomorrow. Tomorrow it's supposed to be HOT and a little more humid so I'm determined to wake myself and my sister up around 6:30-7 a.m. to get it done before it gets too hot. Laurie - GET READY! I'm coming to your house to get your butt out the door if you're not up yet!!!!!!!! (hopefully she'll read this since she's on Spark too).

It's going well but this week my knee started hurting. I think it's a tendon because sometimes it feels like something is moving out of place and then going back, it hurts for a step or two, then stops hurting. Weird! I'm stretching more and not walking as fast. I'm hoping it's just my joints getting used to walking more.

Anyway, things are going well and I've still been able to get other workouts and a rest day in each week and I'm burning MORE calories during my walks than during other, hard workouts. AND I'm down 3 pounds so far this week with my weekly weigh in tomorrow morning and a graduation party tonight. Wish me luck!

    It's expensive but KT tape helps my husbands knee. Especially with tendon issues. But I'm cheap and just buy regular exercise tape and watch the KT videos on how to apply it right lol. I hope it doesn't give you a ton of issues. Good job on getting out there.

Move Over Insanity - I'm Training For a WALK!

I made the decision yesterday to stop doing the Insanity program and focus on my walking training for the MS Challenge Walk. I need to walk 4 days a week from 3-20 miles so that will take up way too much time to continue to do Insanity well and I'm not really in love with the program anyway. I'm a little bored and spoiled with the huge amount of variety I have with my other workouts. So the plan is to do my walking on my walk training days and do something else the other days. I usually use Sunday as my rest days but that is the day the walking schedule has for the really long walks so I'll have to schedule my rest day another day of the week. Maybe Mondays - who knows. I will decide as I go.

I REALLY miss the Bob Harper workout videos so I think I'll do some of those although tonight I was short on time so I did two of the three 20-minute workouts in the Jillian MIchael's Kickboxing Fast Fix DVD and that was plenty. Tomorrow I'm scheduled to walk 4 miles but was supposed to do 3 yesterday and did 4 instead so I'll shoot for 3 tomorrow. My daughter has a band concert at the middle school so I'll plan on walking there since it's 3 miles round trip. If it's not raining. It's supposed to rain and I'm not happy but maybe I'll make a stop at the gym and do the 5K loop on the treadmill instead. Time will tell.

Anyway, I'm also planning on testing for my next level of black belt (1st degree, 2nd tick) the week after my challenge walk so I'll need to train for that and then will most likely do a P90X/Insanity hybrid routine since the complaint I have for P90X is that there's not enough cardio and the complaint I have for Insanity is there's not enough strength training so it will be the best of both worlds. I'll wait until October for that. Priorities you know!

    I had the same problem with Insanity..I think I wasn't ready for it (strength-wise) when I tried it *plus* it was a bit boring..I almost feel like I'm saying something horrible when I say that because it works so well for so many people but it's definitely a good move to switch up to something you like.     I have to say I have been mixing in A LOT of walking with the P90X program. Started with Classic, this week Lean. I agree, I just don't seem to feel a good mix with the program alone. It seems mixing any type of fitness into YOUR lifestyle of what fits you is best and works! Good luck on that Black Belt!

MS Challenge Walk 2012

I have seen this walk advertised on the National MS Society website and wanted to sign up last year but didn't have anyone who wanted to join me and I was really not in the right shape or mindset to do it. Fast forward to this year. I told my sister about it and that I wanted to do it this year and she said she would do it with me! Her sister-in-law (her DH's brother's wife) also has a mom with MS and she asked her to join us and she said yes too! ACK! So we signed up!!!!!!!

HOLY CRAP!!!!!! I signed up to walk 50 miles in three days and raise a minimum of $1,500 to do it! Am I CRAZY????????? I think so! But I'm so excited and ready to do this. Now this weekend I need to go get shoes. I'm going to a store that specializes in running shoes and fitting your feet with the right shoes so I can be comfortable. And of course, I'll need two pairs for sure so I can rest my feet so that will be an extra $100 minimum. One pair at a time. I'm planning on starting my training next week on Monday so let's go! I'm ready!

Another challenge is going to be fitting in my Insanity workouts with my walks but I think I can do it. I've been walking and doing my Insanity workouts already so it shouldn't be THAT bad but we'll see!

I don't know if I'm allowed to post a fundraising link on SparkPeople so I won't post it here, but if anyone wants the link I can send it in a personal e-mail. Just let me know personally. that way I'm not breaking any rules.
