My Mother's Day

Got to sleep in yesterday and logged my 3 pounds weight gain in without really sweating it. I wasn't happy, but really took it in stride better than I would have even a couple of months ago since I still got two dresses - both in size 8 - shopping on Saturday so I didn't even care as much.

Got my presents - a pull up bar (with no real good place to put it but we're working on that), a 15 pound kettlebell and a new fitness mat that is really cushy and feels awesome! I also got the new Carrie Underwood CD so I think I made out pretty well! It's nice that my family has embraced my new lifestyle and accepts it now as normal - especially my workouts.

Got ready for the day and started laundry. Puttered around a bit and then DH, Son #2 and I went for a LONG walk. Went to visit my mom and gave her her gifts. Then onto DH's brother's house for dinner with the in-laws. We were asked to bring fruit, which I LOVE! So we got a couple of yellow mangos, a pineapple, some strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, grapes and kiwis. DH cut that all up and we were all set including a chocolate fruit dip, which was AWESOME! :) (Had a little). I took along two turkey burgers and my own buns because I knew they would probably not have whole grain or low fat stuff there.

SURPRISE! My brother-in-law got a thick cajun turkey breast slice for me for dinner! WOO HOO! I still used my buns (only ate 1) but loved the turkey. I was pleasantly surprised! Had cheesy potatoes with it but the turkey, whole grain roll and fruit were really healthy. Dessert was Angel Food cake (bonus!) with strawberries and cool whip but I just had the cake. Did REALLY well with food except for going to get a second helping of fruit and potatoes so I could have done better but as a whole, did great. I had an Herbalife smoothie for lunch before we went and there were no snacks so i was just fine, thank you.

I'm really pleased that the people around are being so considerate with my lifestyle change. It's AWESOME to have such a great support system! :) Really great day. Hope everyone else had a great day too!

Today I have off, so I dropped the kids off at school, went to Wal-Mart for a few things and then came home and did my Insanity Cardio Power Resistance workout. Went to lunch at Son #2's elementary school with him and have been doing laundry today. I'm going to walk to the middle school to get the older two, then walk to the elementary school for the third one and then we're all walking home so I'll get in a good 3+ mile walk today.

Happy and Not Happy at the Same Time

First, I'll start with what did NOT make me happy today and end with the positive stuff. That way I can vent the stuff that's annoying and end up happier.

I gained 3 pounds this week. Started Insanity on Monday and have had some muscle soreness - especially in my calves from all the lower body work and jumping - but nothing that bad. Some might be water from the DOMS.

To be truthful, I had a little extra to eat at work because we celebrated a coworker's birthday but instead of having tacos I just added taco meat to my salad. My downfall was the tortilla chips. I did have SOME, but not as many as I normally would. But every little bit added up. Then we had Taco Bell the other night and instead of having just ONE taco, I had two plus a quesadilla and cinnamon twists. Ruined it that day. And Thursday we had a rep lunch. I have learned that I really need to NOT eat what the reps bring, since it's usually something I can't really track and have to guess at.

I have only eaten ABOVE my calorie burn one day so really, that much weight should not be fat but I'm not so sure.

I did my measurements today and have gained a 1/2 inch in my waist, hips and thigh. NOT good. That makes me think I'm gaining fat and not muscle or water. I really need to focus on only eating when I'm hungry and NEED to eat. Live and learn I guess. You'd think after doing this for so long I'd know this already but I guess I will always need reminders.

The good news - I got some ROCKIN' gift for Mother's Day!

A 15 pound Kettlebell
A pull up bar (but we don't really have a place to put it so we're trying to figure that out)
A new fitness mat since my yoga mat is getting a little beat up. It's nice!
The new Carrie Underwood CD.

So my focus for this week is to continue my workouts and REALLY watch the calories. See what happens.

    My calories were creeping up. I had to sort of regroup. Today I might have gone over a little, but not too bad, considering there was a breakfast buffet this morning and tonight we ate stuff I got at EarthFare grocery.

Now at buffets I find I have developed the habit of glancing surreptitiously at other people's plates. I never understand why people pile up their plates when they can go back as often as they wish. But I always took a lot of trips! So at least now I limit it to one reasonable plate and maybe one more trip for something that was especially good. Today it was the fruit. (Not the bacon!! :D)

You sound very aware of your situation, and that's half the battle.

    Lucky! I asked for fitness stuff (specifically, a rack for my bike and sand volleyball) and ended up getting a hanging basket. My mom took my son out to buy me something. I think my family still thinks when I ask for fitness stuff that it's just not a fun enough present, or something. **sigh**

Rethinking My Goal Weight

I've been pondering lately how much I really want to get to my goal of 145. I think I have this mental block that is telling my head I can't get down that low. I just am not believing it since I've been on this plateau since July.

Everyone has been telling me how amazing I look and I know I look a lot better than I used to. I look healthy to myself but there's still this extra weight in my belly and thighs I would really like to get rid of. But does that matter? Am I at a healthy weight now? I have a lot of muscle but without an accurate body fat percentage reading how do you know?

At some point I have to ask myself how hard do I want to work toward that goal number. I have NO leeway if I want to lose weight. None. I have to feel really hungry in order to lose weight. I work out six days a week, can keep up with a crazy Insanity workout, can get through a 4-hour Black Belt testing and can walk almost 4 miles in 65 minutes (did that last night). Don't those measures mean more than an arbitrary number?

Doesn't the fact that I've gone from a size 12 pants to a size 8 while only losing 5 pounds? Should I just forget trying to LOSE and focus on how I feel with my workouts? How fast can I go? Can I start running? Can I get through this entire Insanity program? Can I get through a Couch to 5K program? Can I lift MORE weight when I'm doing strength training? I can move around easily. I can lift the laundry baskets up the stairs without any trouble. I can hold a plank for a minute at a time and can balance on one leg easily.

That's what should matter - not the number on the scale. I hate the fit, no body fat women in the fitness DVDs. None of them have any extra fat on them except the Biggest Loser ones, which I like, but haven't done much. I prefer the harder, more extreme workouts at the moment. But last night during my walk I burned 400 calories according to my Bodybugg. And during my 38 minute Insanity workout it was less than 300. Go figure.

    It's just a number! WHY make yourself crazy?!? Are you happy? Do YOU like the way you look? Do YOU like the way you feel? Do what feels right to YOU. For me to be a "healthy BMI" I can't weight any more that 127, REALLY!?! That is SOOO small. I'm working towards 150-140 and we'll see how it goes from there. Honestly, it's just a number. *HUGS*

    I think you read my mind (except for the carrying laundry baskets part).

For me the scale reading is a vanity number.....even though my rational brain knows all about muscle being denser than fat, that my pants size keeps shrinking, that the guy in the mirror is looking pretty darn good, I still want the damn scale reading to keep going down!

    Sometimes a number... is just a number. It doesn't define you in any way. I'd say go with how you feel and how you look to yourself. Keep working out since you obviously enjoy it and if you lose more weight along the way, great... but if not you're still a lot healthier now than you were before you started.

    I agree with Finallybeingme. It's hard to not look at the scale, but who really sees that #, but you and the Dr. Going from a size 12 to an 8 and losing 5 lbs, is really saying something. Your body is a strong fat burning machine. You have done amazing! Happy Mother's Day to you too! emoticon

    What do you mean you don't have an accurate body fat reading? Can't your trainer do a caliper test?

I know what you mean about feeling like you look good (in clothes, anyway) but obsessing about the belly and thighs. I'm exactly the same. What's your hip-to-waist ratio? According to calipers, my body fat is about 20%, but I feel like my body's holding on to belly fat / thigh fat and my hip-to-waist ratio is .84.

Given that my lean muscle mass (weight - body fat) is higher than my mid-range healthy BMI, I know that a healthy weight for me won't be what BMI says it should be, so I've decided that whatever my weight is when I get my hip-to-waist ratio below .80 will be my maintenance weight.

I think you need to get an accurate body fat measurement so you have more information to help you make a more educated guess about a goal weight. I bet you're like me and too muscular for BMI to apply.

I also recommend Max Muscle for busting through plateaus. Looks like there's a store in Loves Park, IL. Their nutrition plan is designed to build muscle and burn fat. Helped me lose 13% body fat when I hit a plateau last fall. http://www.rockford.maxmuscle.com/

Random Sunday Stuff

Today is rainy and yucky outside so my walk is out for the day. DH and I went on a long walk yesterday and I really could have gone longer but we cut it short because we had to go to the grocery store.

Yesterday I ate too much. I had breakfast and then had my niece's bridal shower. Since I had eaten breakfast I wasn't that hungry when lunch was served but I ate anyway. Should have had a LOT less to eat but it is what it is. It's over now. That was at 11:30 a.m. I wasn't hungry until 7:30 p.m.! And the just a little hungry. Got a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store and had some of that with a big salad. Was VERY full the rest of the day. I don't want to do that again. I don't like that overfull feeling anymore. To think I used to think that I had to eat that much because that meant I felt "full." At least now I know what it's like to feel satisfied. Another good thing is that I don't feel like eating as much today so that's good!

Today I want to clean the house. Got to sleep in and got up to get ready for the day. Started laundry, made my breakfast and loaded and started the dishwasher. Next on the agenda is getting rid of all the clutter on our buffet, dinner table and kitchen counters along with finishing the laundry, vacuuming the living room, sweeping the kitchen, and cleaning the two bathrooms.

Tomorrow I get to start Insanity! I can't wait! I watched the fit test to see if it really was a workout and OH YES! It looks like I'll be plenty sweaty and exhausted when I'm done! Looking forward to it! Something different is ALWAYS good.

    Great job! I did yardwork BIG TIME yesterday and today cleaned the inside of the house and did laundry. It's nice to be outside again. I'm excited to hear how you like Insanity. It's one BB product I have not ordered. I'm scared! emoticon Nice eye candy though.

I ordered Body Revolution with Jillian and got an e-mail it was on the way. Hopefully by Wednesday. I can't wait to start. I, too, needed something new and different. We'll see! Yikes! emoticon

I Ran on the Treadmill and Didn't Die!

This morning started off normally. Take the kids to school, go to my sister's house to spend time with her before she went to work, go to the gym for my strength training session with my trainer. I hopped on the elliptical to do my 5 minute warm up and he was there right away so we talked while I was warming up and I asked him what we were going to do. He went over the list and started saying, "run a half mile on the treadmill...." And I just looked at him and said, "Okayyyy....." I have always been afraid to start running for two reasons.
1. My knee is bad and even though it's been a lot better lately, when I least expect it, it starts to hurt sometimes.
2. I just can't get the breathing down. Or I haven't been able to.

So I decided I would just try it and see what happened. He got me on the treadmill and set it at 5.0 MPH and started it. So I started jogging.....and it was okay! I did the half mile in the 3 minutes and then he stopped me. And I didn't DIE! WOO HOO! It gave me much more confidence to maybe start a couch to 5K program and see if I could at least start jogging. I won't ever try to go very fast but I will most likely try it again soon.

Although, my friend from tae kwon do has some Insanity discs he is letting me borrow and even printed out the calendar for me so that's my next plan. Insanity! Again, a little scared, but nobody ever went anywhere without getting out of their comfort zone so let's go! I'm excited!

    "Nobody ever went anywhere without getting out of their comfort zone." Very well put and amen to that! We always imagine things to be worse than what they really are, and as long as you stay in a slow pace to running and build up on that, you should be fine. Congrats on running half a mile! :D

    The breathing always screwed me up with jogging/running too. And with the passing out thing I noticed that my heart rate goes up quickly if I'm not breathing consistently.

I did a bit of reading online about breathing while running and read an article that suggested breathing in for 2-3 steps and then out for 2-3 steps and to keep repeating. I think I average more like 4 steps (at 4mph), but focusing on the breathing like that has helped a lot.
