Weight loss vs. NSV

Friday, March 02, 2012

This morning I was pretty irritated that I'm back up to 159.4 when two weeks ago I was at 157.1. I crunched the numbers and I should either stay the same or have lost weight but I haven't. I busted my plateau at 160 and finally got below and now I'm stuck again. So I was a bit annoyed and figured maybe I'm retaining water since my hip flexor is still sore. I got a muscle relaxant and that's helping a lot but I can only take it at night since it makes me so drowsy I can't function.

Anyway, so we start the workout with step ups, squats and sumo squats and my hip is hurting a little but as we go it gets better. By the time we're done with the workout the hip feels GREAT! No pain as I walk and it's still better even now. I joked with my trainer that I should just work out constantly and it won't hurt then. :)

For part of the workout, he had me doing knee lifts on the Roman chair, then crunches with an 8 pounds medicine ball on the stability ball, and then elbow planks. Mind you, I have never been able to hold a plank for too long - I think 30-40 seconds maybe....I did 6O SECONDS ALL THREE TIMES! Okay - that made me feel SO much better! My abs are obviously getting stronger and that's an awesome non scale victory! So happy!

Add that to the mask fit where they had to search for a smaller mask and my pants getting looser and that means I'm doing pretty well even though the scale doesn't show it. So I choose to be happy and focus on my NSV's and the weight will eventually come.

Good for you! NSV are essential for this journey, especially when the scale is being silly. I'm glad exercise is helping your hip. Hopefully it heals fully soon!

Another NSV Today

Monday, February 27, 2012

I work at a hospital and anyone who comes within three feet of a patient has to have a mask fit every year. They have respirator masks that we have to try on and fit to our face while a machine measures the fit with sitting still, moving your head around, bending forward and talking, etc. Last year I was fit for the regular mask most people use and the same one I had always needed to use. It took 10 minutes.

Today it took 30 MINUTES and 3 MASKS to find one that fit because my face is so much smaller from losing 40 pounds since last year! HOLY COW! Not something you usually think about but really awesome! WOO HOO! And I use the SMALL size too! YAY ME!

I am often surprised when people talk about the things that fit them after losing weight, that didn't before. Things I might not have thought would change

Rings and other jewellery, shoes etc
But face masks? thats a new one.

Funny, but a good indication of the progress you have made! Well done

Sore Hip Flexor-OUCH!

Saturday, February 25, 2012

For a while now my right hip flexor has been a little sore once in a while - usually when I've walked on the treadmill or done a core workout (go figure about that). It acts up more when I've been sitting for a while than when I've been moving around so I'm confused.

Last night I did Core Synergistics (core workout again-hmmmmmm) and when I was done it kept hurting. So much that I couldn't put much weight on it and I was limping. It feels sort of like a tendonitis. Sometimes I put weight on it and it hurts and sometimes it feels just fine. It's annoying.

I did work out this morning but have been resting it today. Ibuprofen and a bit of ice and some Tiger Balm. It's better but I'm glad tomorrow is my rest day and next week starts phase 3 so Monday evening is more upper body.

Wish me luck and if anyone has any more ideas feel free to share them!

Listen to your body rather than looking at the exercise schedule to see what's next. Sounds harsh but it's better to give your body time to heal than to do more harm and be laid up longer. I was looking at your accomplishments and you are doing great!!! You sound really dedicated to your exercise so it's probably very difficult to miss a day here and there. I don't have that balance in my life yet so it's easy for me to sit here and tell you to take it easy. I envy sparkers like you that have that spirit. Take care.

Ouch, yes! When DON'T you flex your hip? Maybe when lying completely flat. I hope the ibuprofen, etc help control the inflammation and pain. Please try to be patient while it heals, easier said than done, I know. emoticon

My hip flexor was really sore when I started P90X as well. It was really tight. I think it was the Ab ripper as well as the whole routine being new to me. Sounds like you found the perfect cocktail for relief. I'll have to try that next time I'm in pain!
Good luck and great job!

Today sort of sucked

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

I got up this morning and gave my husband and kids the last minute little Valentine's Day gifts I got for them last night. My husband felt bad because we had just mentioned that neither of us had gotten anything for anyone for Valentine's Day and he felt like a butthead but I said since I just got my ipod he shouldn't worry about it. That wasn't the problem.

He left for work and I went to get my lunch ready. I had made Quinoa Pilaf a couple of nights ago and got one serving that nigh and one serving for lunch yesterday. He took the whole container to work! I was REALLY looking forward to eating that with a little chipotle hot sauce today but that didn't happen. I was upset.

I get to work and I'm cranky because I had to use my inhaler and it made me jittery. Work was CRAZY. Totally busy, the first doctor ran behind, and neither of us got lunch so I had to choke down a sandwich and strawberries and I was starving. I didn't get to leave a half hour early either since there was still one patient left and then the call came.

My daughter called to say my 11-year-old was playing a Wii game and got mad so he smashed the controller into the TV and cracked the screen. I saw RED! And not only because it was Valentine's Day! Talk about MAD! I told him he'd better get to his room before I got home or he was grounded there for a week and not just a couple of days.

My daughter went to babysit so I only had the two boys tonight. Ken went to the library to study for a test for work he's taking tomorrow so I made MORE Quinoa Pilaf for dinner! I told my husband he's not allowed to touch it and he just laughed. Then he took the Tahoe to the gas station for me and got gas so I figure that's the best Valentine's Day present ever.

Hope everyone else's day was A LOT better than mine! Here's to a better tomorrow. :)

Oh, I can so relate!! It's definitely a bummer when you have plans to take a certain food for lunch and it's gone. Better hide this new batch from him, put it way in back corner in the freezer! lol I have an almost 10yr old who has let his temper get the best of him and our house too!     I hate it when you have your heart set on leftovers... and someone else has beat you to them! I hope he stays away from the Quinoa Pilaf this time!!

Sorry about the TV... I think I would have been grounded for life for doing something like that. Hopefully he's learned that breaking the TV isn't an effective way of dealing with anger.

I hope today is less busy for you at work!

Proof the Scale LIES!

Saturday, February 11, 2012

Got on the scale this morning and it said 159.2. Still under 160 but last Sunday it said 158.6. Here's the number crunching on why I think it's muscle and not fat.

Sunday calories burned according to my Bodybugg (24 hours total)-2503
Ate-2471
Deficit is only 32 but still LESS calories than I burned. And it was a Super Bowl party at my Mom's.

Monday calories burned-2828
Ate - 2509
Deficit-319

Tuesday burned -2732
Ate-2280
Deficit-452

Wednesday burned 2601
Ate-2113
Deficit 488

Thursday burned 2731
Ate-2380
Deficit-351

Friday burned-2817
Ate-2250
Deficit-567

Total deficit is 2209. 3500 is a pound so I still (by the numbers) should have lost about 2/3 of a pound or so.

But I GAINED 0.6 pounds. The scale lies. I guess that means I gained a pound of muscle? WOO HOO then! My face looks slimmer, my waist feels slimmer, my pants feel a little looser. I'm going to take it with a grain of salt and figure I'm building muscle. Yay for me!

Never trust a scale. They're always only part of the picture. Assuming they're even calibrated correctly, they measure the sum of everything you are, physically. Muscle, fat, water, everything. It's just as easy to see a higher number from muscle gain as it is to see a lower number from muscle loss. You know you look good. You know you're making progress. Don't let this stop you! The scale is only a number; you know the truth.
