I am done gaining weight back. I'm done letting my hip pain define me and not working out. I'm done, done, done. I was 2 pounds away from my goal right before my knee surgery and in the best shape of my life. After the surgery I was doing fine with my recovery until my opposite hip started bothering me. I reinjured the knee and had the hip looked at and it's been bothering me ever since. I have had physical therapy, seen a chiropractor, had an arthrogram with an MRI, a Marcaine injection and was supposed to do a bone scan but my insurance wouldn't approve it. I saw a pain management doctor who is willing to do a cortisone injection in the bursa, which is on the outside of the hip instead of in the joint.
I've gained 25 pounds since then. My work pants, which were loose, are now tight. I broke the zipper on my only pair of black pants that fit me last night and that was the last straw. I am DONE. I slept in and decided I was going to spend the day taking care of myself until we have to go to a Halloween party tonight. I worked out right away and ate a good breakfast. I'm off to a good start today!
Does my hip still hurt? Yes. But it's better than it was. It loosened up during my workout and I feel really good.
Yesterday was my last day at my current job in the role as I knew it. I start on Monday at a medical weight loss clinic that a doctor I work with is opening and I'm really excited to start this new chapter in my life. It's only every other week to start with, but I am still working at the hospital on the weeks that I'm not at the weight loss center until they are able to post and fill my position. By then, I think the center will be off the ground and at some point I'll be working every week there. I will be able to do my health coaching as a service offered by the clinic for the patients there - AND I'll be able to bring in my own clients. I can't wait!
New job, new determination. I can do this!

It's been a while since I blogged so I figured I'd update everyone. I've been keeping up with my walk training and the weekend mileage is getting bigger. My hip had started bugging me while walking and I didn't tell my ortho doctor because I didn't think it was important. Last week Thursday I went to Tae Kwon Do class. A head instructor from our main school has been teaching on Thursday nights and I have been going because she's an awesome instructor. We started out good and then started doing a set of front leg roundhouse kicks where you kick with your front leg and bounce on your back leg when your front leg goes up. Well, I was concerned about my hip (the opposite side as the knee I just had surgery on) and I landed on my left knee (the bad one), felt a pop and landed on my butt on the mat. It started burning and I knew I was done for the night.
I did put ice on it right away and was actually able to put weight on it. I went home and it was still hurting so I made the decision to go to urgent care (after eating Kraft Macaroni and Cheese for dinner because that's what my husband made since he thought I would be gone longer). Long story short, the dr. said it was a knee sprain (most likely ligament based) and I should use crutches if I had too much pain and call the ortho the next day.
Called the ortho and got an appointment for Monday morning. I decided I would have to take an entire week off of working out to help heal the knee and the hip. Last night was a week and I did go for a 3.4 mile walk but didn't work out today. It felt good but I did take it easy and walked much slower than I normally would have.
The ortho doc said he doesn't think I did anything major to my knee because it wasn't swollen and there was no fluid on it. He did a hip xray, which was normal, so he figured it was just overuse and I should dial back the activity for a bit and let my symptoms be my guide. I'm getting a bit used to not working out and I'm concerned but I think as soon as I feel well healed I'll be right back to it. I can't wait! He also gave me a different anti-inflammatory medication and that is helping a lot. So we'll see what happens. I think I'll still take it easy for a few days so I feel 100%. The hip and knee both still feel a little wonky.
We also went to get our new camper today! Here's a picture!
The good news is that it's a lot bigger than our old one, which was a popup camper, and also has a bathroom with a toilet and shower, a full size fridge with a freezer and room to sleep 8. The bad news is that it won't fit in our backyard for storage because the neighbors have a fence right next to our driveway and the overhang at the back of the house is right there and we can't swing it around enough. So now we have it blocking the garage and will have to find another place to store it. We go camping August 19th for 5 days and we're really excited!
So that's about it - farmer's market tomorrow and Brewer game with Ken's work Box (free food and drinks!) and the Wisconsin State Fair on Sunday. Should be a great weekend! Hope everyone else has a great one too!

I'm so glad my knee is letting me tolerate exercise again - especially today.I have REALLY missed doing an intense workout and working up a great sweat. :)
Last night my youngest son had a Cub Scout "hike" which consisted of going to a local nature center and walking around their little 0.15 mile trail to talk about the stations and things in nature. We got there early so we could walk a little before the scout event since it didn't start until 7 and I didn't want to be out too late. I needed to walk 4 miles. Ken, Paul and I walked out on one of the trails about a half mile and then walked back so we could have at least one mile in. When we figured out the "hike" wasn't going to be very long or much of a workout I told my husband I was going off on my own. (with an evil grin, I might add).
So off I went. The majority of the trails are in a concentrated area and aren't too long so I started off on the red trail. It went through the woods a bit and then started to loop back to the beginning so I took off on the green trail where we were before the scouts got there. The green trail went up a hill into a meadow with beautiful views. Photos:
Then the trail came upon a sign to the Nature Trail that was WAYYYYYYYYYYYY down at the bottom of the hill (huge hill I might add!). With a little grin to myself, I hesitated and then turned to go down the hill. I was only at 2.5 miles so it couldn't hurt to go farther, could it? Naaahhh! LOL! I was having a blast! The cool thing about this place is that each trail has something different on it. There is a meadow, a pine forest, a regular tree forest, a boardwalk over wetlands - it has it all and there are tons of different views. Here are photos of the nature trail and observation deck:
I didn't get to do the whole trail because Ken and Paul were done and wanted me to come back but the coolest thing I saw was the bridge - it looked COMPLETELY different going over it one way than the other. Here are the pics:
It was beautiful and I keep realizing with every hike that Wisconsin is definitely a beautiful state that we take for granted. The nature center is about 5-6 miles from my house. It's amazing and it was an awesome walk.
4 miles DONE!
Today I broke out the Les Mills Combat DVD's and did the Combat 30 workout to see what it was all about. I watched the basics DVD on my computer to see if I thought my knee could handle it. I decided to try it. It ROCKED! It totally got bonus points from me because there was one person who did the workout modified for low impact so I was excited that I could follow her.
It was hard and my knee got tired, but it held up pretty well. I didn't do any of the jumping so that helped a lot. But since I haven't been to Tae Kwon Do since the night before my surgery it was really nice to do a martial arts type workout.
Anyone who is interested in Beachbody workouts, let me know because I'm now a coach and can hook you up! AND they just announced last night that they came out with a VANILLA flavor! I'm so excited and can't wait to try it! Love it!
Have a great weekend everyone!
