work vs. workout

I am almost finished working my 7th day in a row (I guess I should say "night"). I love Monday mornings after a long weekend. I have not worked out in many days because I have slept all day and felt yucky when I was awake at home. When I am working nights, it seems like the only time I am not really tired and feeling crappy is when I am at work. I know that plenty of other people work odd or long shifts and still manage to live life or get in a workout. Not sure why I can't seem to do it. Anyway, I have the next few nights off and I am going to workout each day. I have been eating ok, trying to track what I eat but I sometimes forget if I don't write it down right away. I think that's all for now, I will go back to counting down the minutes until I can punch out....

    Leaffan, I always work nights but I am only scheduled 3 nights a week, the rest I pick up extra. If I take my workout clothes to work there is a chance I will get in some cardio as there is a wellness center where I work. I really should be taking advantage of that every time I work because it is so convenient and I still sleep just fine. Recently, at work, I have been trying to get in wall push ups, calf raises and simple exercises when my lunch is in the mocrowave or when I am waiting for a patient in the bathroom!

Maybe I will give working out before work a try. I have all the exercise equipment I need at home. Probably the best thing for me to do would be to workout as soon as I wake up at around 3;30 or 4pm. Then I would be awake and not lethargic all evening. Thanks, for writing to me. It's nice to know there are others who understand.

Angie, have a great trip. I will miss you!!

    I'm so proud of you for doing what you can and trying to think of solutions to tricky issues. It IS a struggle to overcome fatigue and going against your body's cycle and try to fit in a workout.

I'm going to TX on Friday and won't see you until March 7th!!

I just read your blog and and so much of what you had written relates to how I feel everyday while I am working. I work full time night shift 10:30pm-8am for a Health Care Agency at a desk job. Anyway, it's so funny when you said you feel better when you are at work, that's exactly how I feel.

I have tried both working out before and after work and found working out at the gym before work works really well for me. I feel rejuvenated and ready to start my shift when I get to work and sleep really well when I get home from work the next morning.

I had actually gone about a month without going to the gym and said I would exercise at home.....well that didn't work out too well. With the kids at home, the computer, etc....I just sat around feeling like crap until I had to leave for work, so the last couple of weeks I have been packing my bag and head out the door around 8:30pm to get a good workout in before work and I tell ya I don't feel like it most of the time but once I am there I am glad I had gone to the gym because it makes me feel so much better!!

On a sidenote, I wouldn't be too hard on yourself when you are currently on your seventh night, I have done that before and boy do you get tired at the end of the week. Do you always work seven in a row?

Anyway, hang in there and I hope you find it in yourself to find the energy to get your workouts in because I promise you it will make you feel better.

I started the couch to 5k program this week. I started with week one but found that it wasn't challenging at all so I skipped to week 2 day 1, which is what I did today. So in all, I spent 35 minutes on my treadmill and then another 32 minutes on my elliptical. I also used one of my 10 minute solutions videos to work my arms and abs. I feel pretty good about my workout. I should not have had a second latte this morning and wish I didn't like them so much. At least I have almost completely stopped drinking mt. Dew! I used to drink 1-2 20 ounce bottles every day, but now have it maybe once or twice a month if I am tired at work (I work night shift).

    I'm so proud of you Katy! Soda and coffee drinks are a hard habit to break! Don't beat yourself up too much, just try to drink them in moderation or make some healthy substitutions, like skim milk in your coffee drinks, etc. I watched an episode of Biggest Loser on the internet last night and it got me all riled up to eat right and exercise! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

    Good job on almost getting that MD habit kicked. I haven't had a full-strength one in about two months now I think and I am finally to the point where I don't miss them (much anyway, lol). Hopefully it will get warmer out so we can start walking/jogging outside soon! :o)
