Winter motivation!

Saturday, February 15, 2014

I read the other day that "summer bodies are earned in the winter." I had never heard that before, but it makes a lot of sense. Usually, I plan to be fit in the summer but don't start working on it until May-ish... a heck of a lot less helpful than starting in January like I did this time around, so I really hope these efforts pay off. Now is the time to hit the gym hard!

Also, supposedly the temperature will climb over 50 here next week! And we're not supposed to have any more subzero days until next winter. I am so ready for that! Daylight savings time starts in just a few weeks, and then spring will officially start a couple weeks later, and then not long afterwards it will be April already. We are already over the winter hump, I think.

I'm excited about getting more fit and the idea that the fat I melt off will be replaced by muscle that's going to help me run faster and improve my tennis game. If I can hit the ball harder and have less bulk to hustle around the court, it'll make me a better player, which is great. It's empowering to look forward to not just looking slimmer, but being stronger.

Anyway, just trying to think positive. Thanks for reading :) Hope everyone enjoys the weekend!

5K here I come

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

I just started week 5 of the SP Rookie 5K training program, and it feels so good to be making progress with running again. I've used this program in the past, so I know it works for me. I have my eye on a couple 5Ks later this spring, and meanwhile I can just work on building my endurance back to running without having to stop. Hopefully I can chip away at my time before the race happens too. It's still a goal of mine to run a 5K under 30 minutes. Maybe this will be the year!

I also got to play some tennis yesterday, which was a nice surprise. I went to practice with the ball machine, and it wasn't working, but another beginner student offered to hit the ball around with me. We played for an hour and decided to meet up next week too. It would be great to have a tennis buddy, so I'm hoping it works out. I love it when exercise doesn't feel like work!

I'm doing Body Pump classes a couple times a week now - I had never tried it before, but it's a full-body group strength training workout using current pop music. Each muscle group is set to a different song. Music makes a huge difference in my workouts, and my gym isn't always the best at incorporating music from the last 10 years, so this has been great. It also takes the guesswork out of weight lifting, which is so helpful.

Well I may be unemployed (temporarily), but at least I will hopefully be buff when I start working again. I just hope neither of those things will take too long! sigh. Have a great day all!

Watch out - after you run your first race you might get the "race bug." I remember after my first I just wanted to run more and more! Congratulations!

Finding a silver lining

Monday, February 03, 2014

According to my scale this morning, I gained three pounds in the last week. Not cool. However, I think at least part of it was because TOM came back, and due to my health problems I hadn't seen TOM in awhile. So I'm actually not that upset because I feel like this is a sign that I really am getting better, and that makes me really happy.

Also I've realized I need to be a little more thoughtful about my diet and exercise. I'm going to try these new strategies this week and see what happens:
- bring back Saturdays as my "treat day" and not eat junk other days
- regularly include strength training in my routine
- find an inspirational quote and post it in my room
- write down a list of reasons why I want to get back to my previous weight, and look at it periodically
- stop baking for awhile, unless I KNOW I can give all of the goodies away quickly, and try cooking new healthy recipes instead

I tried my "eat a scoop of dough after the cookies are in the oven" trick and it did kind of work, at first. I sipped green tea while making the cookies and didn't sample any dough until I had put the first batch in the oven, but then I lost my willpower and ate more dough, as well as more cookies. They were good (like, REALLY good), but not worth it.

Well, it's a new week, and I have a lot to be thankful for. Happy Monday everyone!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Thought I would check out one of yours.

You have some good ideas here, glad I read them.

Hope you are feeling better, and don't let that silly old scale worry you!

I am also laughing at myself, I am 64 years old, and my Time of the Month, has been gone for so long, that I couldn't figure out what you meant at first! LOL

TOM can be brutal. I feel your pain. About baking, I find that if I bake, I have to share it. Also, I stick the surplus in the freezer. Last weekend I made blueberry waffles. They were so damn good, but I ate my share, made sure my boys enjoyed them, and froze the rest. I bake quite a bit, but I make sure to give away goodies, especially if people are visiting. (That's not why I gained weight over the holidays though. I blame the damn pneumonia.)

TOM just stinks but I understand where you are coming from. I gained 7 pounds over the weekend from my TOM. I MEAN 7 POUNDS. Hubby just hugs me. I could throw a brick thru the window but I won't. It seems to leave pretty quickly but it stings when I know I didn't eat 7 pounds of gain!

I hope mixing it up for you works and sparks you in the right direction!

Don't be too hard on yourself! I'd say "TOM" coming back is definitely a good sign! I agree on having a designated cheat day...it gives you something to look forward to. I definitely had to stop baking...I am tempted by the dough as well...once the cookies are baked I'm fine lol. I used to chew gum while mixing the ingredients and that helped sometimes. Happy Monday to you as well!

Comfort food overdose

Thursday, January 30, 2014

Yesterday I made cheddar potato soup for lunch and thought I was being smart by using a couple tricks to lighten up the recipe. Except it was so good, especially with how cold it's been outside, that I ate way too much. I added the recipe to the nutrition tracker AFTER eating a couple big bowls of soup, and realized that I had just consumed over 900 calories.

Then we had a yummy, cheesy, bread-crumb-topped, Midwestern-style casserole that my mom had made for dinner... and despite planning to just eat cereal instead, I threw caution to the wind. Sigh. I'll have to plan a little more wisely and check out calories ahead of time, so that I can eat the right portion sizes and not feel guilty afterwards. Lesson learned!

I did go to spinning yesterday so hopefully that made a tiny dent in the day's calories. Anyway, it's a new day with a clean slate now. Hope everyone has a good one!

Like my sister Dee says, it's a new day. It sounds like the soup was awesome! Besides, if you spin, shouldn't you eat more? My trainer (back when I was lifting weights) would urge me to eat way more when I lifted, and I never actually did to his range, but I suspect the truth was somewhere in the middle. Anyway, the calories will average out. :)

It should even itself right. Spinning ain't easy & you burn huge calories... Today is a NEW day.

God bless,

Dee

This is why I don't cook lol! I used to try and make large amounts of low fat recipes but I would always end up just eating way too much of it at a time. I had to resort to frozen Lean Cuisines. I know it's not the healthiest, but it works well for me and there's so many varieties now that I never get bored. Good for you for getting back on track today!

I heart tennis

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

I started tennis lessons last weekend, and I'm loving it. I have always enjoyed the sport, and it's really exciting to get to play every Saturday now. It's been awhile since I've played, so I'm just starting from scratch at the beginners' level to improve my basics. I could see myself really getting into it, and it's great when exercise is fun! So I am pumped about this and had to share. :)

You definitely must live in the west coast. I used to play tennis, then raquetball. I would love to get back into it. I wasn't very good mind you, but it was fun!

I heart tennis too!! Love playing and watching but my problem is I am a power house hitter so I spend more time chasing after the ball than actually hitting it. I won't make my partner chase after something I hit a football field away!

So glad that you are able to get out in this crazy weather and enjoy an activity! We woke up to 1 today. Too cold here to play tennis .... outside!
