I read the other day that "summer bodies are earned in the winter." I had never heard that before, but it makes a lot of sense. Usually, I plan to be fit in the summer but don't start working on it until May-ish... a heck of a lot less helpful than starting in January like I did this time around, so I really hope these efforts pay off. Now is the time to hit the gym hard!
Also, supposedly the temperature will climb over 50 here next week! And we're not supposed to have any more subzero days until next winter. I am so ready for that! Daylight savings time starts in just a few weeks, and then spring will officially start a couple weeks later, and then not long afterwards it will be April already. We are already over the winter hump, I think.
I'm excited about getting more fit and the idea that the fat I melt off will be replaced by muscle that's going to help me run faster and improve my tennis game. If I can hit the ball harder and have less bulk to hustle around the court, it'll make me a better player, which is great. It's empowering to look forward to not just looking slimmer, but being stronger.
Anyway, just trying to think positive. Thanks for reading :) Hope everyone enjoys the weekend!

I just started week 5 of the SP Rookie 5K training program, and it feels so good to be making progress with running again. I've used this program in the past, so I know it works for me. I have my eye on a couple 5Ks later this spring, and meanwhile I can just work on building my endurance back to running without having to stop. Hopefully I can chip away at my time before the race happens too. It's still a goal of mine to run a 5K under 30 minutes. Maybe this will be the year!
I also got to play some tennis yesterday, which was a nice surprise. I went to practice with the ball machine, and it wasn't working, but another beginner student offered to hit the ball around with me. We played for an hour and decided to meet up next week too. It would be great to have a tennis buddy, so I'm hoping it works out. I love it when exercise doesn't feel like work!
I'm doing Body Pump classes a couple times a week now - I had never tried it before, but it's a full-body group strength training workout using current pop music. Each muscle group is set to a different song. Music makes a huge difference in my workouts, and my gym isn't always the best at incorporating music from the last 10 years, so this has been great. It also takes the guesswork out of weight lifting, which is so helpful.
Well I may be unemployed (temporarily), but at least I will hopefully be buff when I start working again. I just hope neither of those things will take too long! sigh. Have a great day all!

According to my scale this morning, I gained three pounds in the last week. Not cool. However, I think at least part of it was because TOM came back, and due to my health problems I hadn't seen TOM in awhile. So I'm actually not that upset because I feel like this is a sign that I really am getting better, and that makes me really happy.
Also I've realized I need to be a little more thoughtful about my diet and exercise. I'm going to try these new strategies this week and see what happens:
- bring back Saturdays as my "treat day" and not eat junk other days
- regularly include strength training in my routine
- find an inspirational quote and post it in my room
- write down a list of reasons why I want to get back to my previous weight, and look at it periodically
- stop baking for awhile, unless I KNOW I can give all of the goodies away quickly, and try cooking new healthy recipes instead
I tried my "eat a scoop of dough after the cookies are in the oven" trick and it did kind of work, at first. I sipped green tea while making the cookies and didn't sample any dough until I had put the first batch in the oven, but then I lost my willpower and ate more dough, as well as more cookies. They were good (like, REALLY good), but not worth it.
Well, it's a new week, and I have a lot to be thankful for. Happy Monday everyone!

Yesterday I made cheddar potato soup for lunch and thought I was being smart by using a couple tricks to lighten up the recipe. Except it was so good, especially with how cold it's been outside, that I ate way too much. I added the recipe to the nutrition tracker AFTER eating a couple big bowls of soup, and realized that I had just consumed over 900 calories.
Then we had a yummy, cheesy, bread-crumb-topped, Midwestern-style casserole that my mom had made for dinner... and despite planning to just eat cereal instead, I threw caution to the wind. Sigh. I'll have to plan a little more wisely and check out calories ahead of time, so that I can eat the right portion sizes and not feel guilty afterwards. Lesson learned!
I did go to spinning yesterday so hopefully that made a tiny dent in the day's calories. Anyway, it's a new day with a clean slate now. Hope everyone has a good one!
