went to the gym!!

Monday, February 10, 2014

My daughter and I went to the gym at work yesterday. I met with a trainer a few days ago, discussed my goals, fears, expectations, and limitations.

He gave me a road map to start.

I went yesterday and did 3 arm machines with the sets/reps he suggested and walked 30 minutes on the treadmill.

I felt rejuvenated!!

My weight still seems to be climbing up, so hopefully that will stop and begin heading down again!!

I sound like a broken record!!!

****I UPDATED WITH A COMMENT AT BOTTOM***

I am TRYING to restart.

I had lost 38# I have gained all but 18 of those pounds back. Mind you it has been a slow gain for the most part, but here lately it just keeps coming on…none of my clothes fit…i feel uncomfortable in my own skin…I DONT LIKE IT!!!!

I tried to eat better (for me) last night and have eaten really good today so far. I have not exercised yet - I really like doing that in the morning so SOMEONE please hold me accountable! Make sure that I exercise in the morning!

I used the calculator to see how long it would take me to lose what i had gained! It would be JUNE!!!OMG

If anyone wants to be my butt kicker and see me thru this please feel free!!

Thanks!!

Oh gosh. You'll be okay. Just try not to over think it. Do what you need to do to get yourself to your goal no matter how long it takes.

At least you are not starting for the very beginning again! You have a head start on the way towards your goal. Keep it fixed in your mind and do the things you know will bring you closer to it. Tomorrow you exercise even if its just going for a walk or doing some jumping jacks. You can build on any positive progress no matter how small. You CAN do it! You WILL do it! ;)

You didn't gain back all of the weight you lost so that is great. Obviously you have maintained some control. You know what to do and I know you can do it.

Diagnosis and omg I really need ST

Monday, November 19, 2012

From last week

"Mon: 20 Min Zumba + ST (upper body) + stretching
Tue: 20 Min Zumba
Wed: 20 min Zumba + ST + stretching
Thur: 20 min zumba
Fri: 20 min zumba + ST (core) + stretching

I am so dingy! I didnt realize ST could be with your own body weight!! And that things such as wall pushups/planks/leg raises etc count!!!

Wonder how long it will take to see a little definition and less jiggle?? "

I pretty much stuck to the schedule - the friday turned into a sunday work out though!

OK Monday was 2 types of wall push up (felt it by the end - so that felt good and like I was doing it right)

Wed - couldnt get the video to play :o(

Fri - I didnt get up in time to do before work, and as always happens - didnt feel like it after, so this work out got pushed to sunday

Sunday - ok...is anyone as out of shape as I am? bicycle crunches - had to stop several times before I could make t to 12!! Then came lateral raises ( lay on back with feet straight up in air, lower and raise! I think I did 5!!! PITIFUL!!! Pendulum was hard but ok, side plank - what a joke couldnt get up so I tried to do on elbow - I might have held form 2 seconds!!

I also got some bad news friday! It has been confirmed that I have rheumatoid arthritis and they are referring me to a specialist! I have thought I was showing signs of getting it for years now, but to have it confirmed! I broke down!! I felt like - Here I am 1/2 way (almost ) to my weight lose goal - felling for the 1st time ever that this is going to happen! I am going to make it to 150, maybe even 140....then this

Will the medicine make me fat, will the pain keep me from exercising, will my body get all mangled like my moms...AUGH

So sorry for the hard diagnosis. Hug

You have been doing well on the program (half done!) so maybe you should continue with what has been working. Loosing weight and getting stronger can only help.

Try not to worry about the future. Instead, make decisions for today based upon the best information available. Then live your life with enjoyment.

Try not to worry. I have had R.A. since I was 38 years old and now I'm 60. I learned ways to cope and I do very well. Diet and exercise have really helped me. I have a good quality of life and you can too.

emoticon love i know how rheumatoid arthritis can affect someone ,so do yopu obviously from your mom but one thing i can recomend is to work and fight through thr pain.i have two classics examples for you.my mother let her pain control her instead of the other way round.in the end she couldn´t even hold a cup of tea by herself,i from the age of 9 had to dress wash and feed my mom as she lost the use of her fingers, could hardly walk without the use of two walking sticks etc.my nana onthe other hand although riddled just as bad as my mom fought to the end through the pain.she knitted to stop her joints going stiff and she made bread right up to the day i die.i know i will also probably have rheumatoid arthritis and can see my joints starting to deform already but i know who´s example i will be using.that of my nanas.today there is alot more choice of treatments and the medication is more effective as well.hope you can find the right treatment for you.take care and keep smiling.p.s.well done on the strength training emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Strength Training HELP!!!

Friday, November 09, 2012

Hello - if you are taking time to read this blog - thank you! I cannot do this with out your help!!

I am kind of an all or nothing type - which usually means nothing lol

I have been wanting to incorporate ST into my fitness from the beginning (09) but have been VERY sporadic at best! I want EVERYTHING toned and NO FLABBY - but get bogged down in the details. I am STILL a recovering couch potato - even though I move a whole lot more than I did I am no where near most of my spark friends exercise level. If I do some thing 20 min., 3 days a week - it has been a good fitness week for me.

I only have light hand weights (3# I think) and a balance ball. I was tossing around doing arms monday, legs tuesday, core wed, arms thur, legs friday? I am not very strong now. If I had to guess my legs are strongest, followed way back in the distance is arms/core. I think 10 minutes would be a good starting point?? I feel like I need 2 core days too, but I know I probably wouldnt do anything on the weekend!!

Does anyone have a good "routine" for a beginner?

Good exercises for each "part"?

ANY guidance will be helpful and VERY much appreciated!!

I find that good 'ol SQUATS and LUNGES are THEE best bet in toning those legs! They may be old school but nothin' quite beats them, in my opinion.
Start out with like 2 or 3 sets of 8-10. When you are ready to progress, go lower. It's amazing how low you can eventually go and how great it feels.... eventually. When you're ready to progress further, grab some weights (or resistance band) and hold them while you do them. :-)

My favorite way to tone arms is by using a resistance band. Look up some exercises for it. It's a pretty cheap investment and you can do sooooo much with a band! AND, when you're ready to progress, you don't need to get bigger weights, just use more resistance in the band!

Abs/Core: Noone likes them, but crunches and good 'ol fashioned sit-ups can do wonders. But you really need to engage that core muscle. Really put your mind into it. Doing them on a ball is a great way to engage that muscle!
Also, PLANKS! I have a love/hate relationship with planks! These things can be killer, but will really work those muscles. Starting out, you may only be able to hold it for a couple of seconds (literally), but keep building on that time.

Losing weight while strength training is KEY to success (in my opinion) :-)
Start out small and just keep building up. Don't let it initimidate you at all. You are going to be sooooo glad you did! It makes an amazing difference! :-)

Hope any of this helps! :-)

Just like what these gals already said, SP has some fabulous videos to start out with for ST, but like MORTICIAADDAMS said it is based individually on what you can and can't do. You may have to try out several until you find ones that work best for you. When I started out with ST, I must say I was NOT a big fan, but now I actually really love it. My muscles feel stronger, even when they are a bit sore like NOW, but the results are really WONDERFUL! I really am so happy to see how much my arms and legs are getting toned, my core and tush are getting better, too. I too started out in Couch Potato Land!

Start with the SparkPeople Boot Camp videos, which will direct you on what to do safely and encourage you to keep going. Day by day they will get through all of the body's areas. They may have modified (less streneous) options. Just do whatever you can on the videos but keep moving until the end.

Here's my biggest recommendation: Don't underestimate what your body can accomplish. Push yourself to be uncomfortable. You will have sore muscles - you will recover. Do the planned exercise session even if you don't want to - you will get through the session. Make exercise your priority - you are a priority.

Incorporating excercise will change your life - more than you can concieve!

You really should check out the exercises on sparkpeople because I found that when I decided to do strength training that there were only certainly exercises I could do or would do and it narrowed it down a lot. The only exercises that will work are the ones that you enjoy doing and picking those out is very individual.
