Week Eight: Friday Bingo!

Saturday, February 22, 2014

I realize Iím taking a lot of supplements and vitamins. Right now my body is a mess. I have been getting a sinus infection or the beginnings of one. Itís been brewing for a while. I went to Costco with my friend almost two weeks ago and I bought Costco brand of Zyrtec, also a huge bottle of Costco Benadryl. Mainly for incase the generic Zyrtec didnít work. I have had troubles with generics, Safeway, rite-aid, and Albertsons brands donít work, I actually need name brand. I have been using it for 12 years every single night. My doctor told me itís okay that if I need a little boost to add the Benadryl. I have been starting that cough from the nasal drip and asthma. I have just been miserable and the coughing hasnít been helping my back.

I told the acupuncturist and he put some menthol oil for me to breathe while getting working on my back and my sinus. Afterwards he had shown me some of the herbal supplements that help clear the sinus. I got some and they are sure helping. I feel a lot better. He said to use them with my other medications.

I was in a lot of pain today but after acupuncture I felt much better. It seemed he worked his magic. Thank you!!!

Another good note is got a fitness bingo today. I did 30 minutes of boxing, but I had to modify it since my back was hurting. Normally I do it in the pool but this time I did it on the stability ball. I was able to stretch out and shift for my back.

My healthy high point today was getting the fitness bingo, I wasnít going to do it but I saw it would give me a bingo so I did it! How is that for incentive?

My health low point was back pain limited me. I had planned to go to the pool but my back hurt a lot.

I always keep benedryl on hand. Also the "vintage" antihistamine - chlortrimeton. It's been around since I was a child and now the generic form (4mg) is 100 pills for $3. I take one each morning along with my vitamin since I'm allergic to most of the outside world.

I hope you feel better soon.

Week Eight: Why I don't eat organic meat.

Friday, February 21, 2014

Today I bought some primrose capsules and inositol. I didnít know if I should get the powder form or the capsules. Pretty much I let the price guide me. I will look it up later to see what is better to take.

I ate well but did have a slip up. While buying the primrose and inositol capsules I bought some fresh made organic applesauce and carrot cake. The applesauce was fine but the carrot cake. I didnít eat all the frosting it was too sweet but the cake was wonderful. I wasnít craving it but I did saw it and it was an impulse buy. Today I was craving fast food. I watched Peta videos to remind me how horrible animal are treated in the food industry to stop me from getting some. It stopped me. I felt bad craving something so horrible. Talk about major guilt.

Warning the section is about the meat industryÖ

There are a few times when people ask me why Iím not for organic meats and dairy. I tell them itís because the majority of the time itís just as bad and regular meats and dairy because the animals might be in the same living conditions or cage free but crammed together and get sick but not get the medications they need to heal. So itís just as bad as certain feed, hormones, antibiotics, medications, etc.

The other reason is because Iím for small farms and local farms to sell meat at farmers markets and stores. The kind that take care of their animals and make sure they are treated right, like if they are sick, they will heal them and make sure they are having a good happy life in their care. Because these small farms are giving their animals medication for when their animals are sick to help heal them. They canít be considered organic, yet they might be giving them very high quality food, good living conditions, and treating them very humane, better than most meats labeled organic.

If you are just buying organic meat because you think itís better for you or because itís better for the animals or environment, youíve been mislead. Take a look at how they treat their animals. Itís something to look into. This is why I stay away from eggs that even say free range or cage free. Yeah, they might not be in a cage but their living conditions might be just as bad as a regular meat company.

If anything look into where your food is coming from. It might change everything in how you eat. In some ways I wish I never opened that door because ignorance can be bliss. Other times Iím very proud of what I do know and that I can make active choices and make a difference. Iím not against eating meat. I still have some at times but I try to get mine for local farms at my local farmers market.

Which pill will you take the red or the green? (Matrix reference, lol... I know geek alert.)

Again I wasnít able to exercise. My back was bothering me still and this time I had a major migraine. My friend and I were talking about it and she is suffering from the same things. Our eyes were itchy and watering all the time, just weeping, and I swear I had pink eye but it was allergies. Iíve been having major sinus pressure, nasal drip, asthma, and the asthma/allergy cough. Iím hoping tomorrow I will be able to exercise. I see the chiropractor and acupuncturist so I know after them I will not be able to do anything.

My healthy high point today was buying two more health productsóprimrose and inositol.

My health low point was eating carrot cake.

There is a local woman who calls her eggs 'organic'. I never even realized she had chickens for the longest time because they never leave the coop they live in. Not sure how they are organic but they certainly aren't treated well. Another neighbor raises cows. They graze in a pasture, lay around in a field. These cows have a good life, the kind a normal cow should. I purchase his meat at the farmer's market when he has some available for my family.

Week Eight: Day 50! I have changed a lot.

Thursday, February 20, 2014

I can't believe it's day 50. Time is just moving along. So, looking back I see I'm 35 pounds lighter, even if the last two weeks I haven't lost. At least I am maintaining while injured.

Looking back to before I started I've made big changes. I don't have milk in my home. The only dairy is some cheese that I haven't been eating much of. I have very little bread products and have been trying to stay away from the grains (gluten). I do have a lot of rice, oatmeal, and quinoa. I have a healthy looking fridge, open it up and healthy choices, no processed foods, mainly freggies! Same with the freezers. Open the cupboards, healthy choices, no processed foods, mainly items from the bulk bins in mason canning jars.

I've been making foods from scratch, a lot of organic beans, rice noodles, balsamic vinegar, apple cider, flaxseed, coconut, seeds, and more spices and herbs. I've even grinded up flaxseed to add to my foods.

I have switched from potatoes to yams (not sweet potatoes). I have switched soda and crystal light to water with slices of lemons and limes and decaf tea. I have switched milk to organic almond and coconut milk. I have switched meat to beans. I have switched sweets and junk to healthy smoothies. I have switch two nights of water zumba to six nights of hour long exercise sessions.

Overall, I have changed a lot in the last 50 days. I'm proud of my choices and know if I slip up, I have the next meal and/or choice and day to make better choices. It's time to stop criticizing my steps back when having a sweet or hamburger but to look at this whole picture. I have changed a lot in the last 50 days.

Here's what happened today.

I had plans to exercise today but my back said no way. Sorry challenge partner. I just couldnít today. Itís a major frustration when the pain like that happens. I went to massage therapy and this time I told her about something that has been happening since the injury. I thought I said it before and after we talked she remembered me saying it but thought it was something else until I gave her specifics of it again. We found that one of the muscles in my behind which is extremely painful to the touch is causing a catching action when Iím walking. I told her when my back is hurting or going to hurt real bad every time I take a step on the right foot and the heel touches the ground it feels like a popping but not like a popping of the finger or bonee but like a popping but like the muscle or ligament is getting caught making a rubber band sliding over popping feeling. Itís odd to describe but thatís the only way I can visualize it as. She didnít do a lot of massaging but more of trying to figure out what muscle and why itís happening. We did a few things to figure it out but she said sheíd do more research for next week. While I was there she really was exploring and it didnít hurt at the time but a few hours later my goodness my back has been on fire.

I might not have exercised but I'm sure I will be able to do it tomorrow. Just because I wasn't able to today doesn't mean it will be the end of it all. By not exercising I'm taking care of my body. My body is saying no, rest up.

On a different subject...
As a note for myself, donít drink peppermint tea so late. I had a dream I was searching for bathrooms. I woke to the most intense feeling of having to go the bathroom. Reminder, donít drink liquids so late at night!!!!

I had a great conversation with a close friend. I havenít seen her since October and she will be visiting in March. I canít wait. We talked about health plans and vitamins. She has recommended me to take inositol. I have researched it and it helps with polycystic ovarian syndrome which she also has. Iím already taking B12, Omega 3ís, D3, probiotics, and Chinese medicines. Now I will be adding primrose and inositol. I hope taking all this doesnít put me in vitamin overload.

My healthy high point today was eating healthy even when craving fast foods. (I did it to myself I watch Man vs. Food at my clientís home.)

My health low point was my back pain.

Week Eight: Healthy Day.

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Today I did well with my water intake. I drank 6 cups of water and 4 cups of decaffeinated peppermint tea (itís naturally decaf). I made healthy choices for food. I tried a new recipe for me today. It was a sweet potato and black bean burrito. I didnít have sweet potato but I did have yams. I eat a yam a day. They are healthier than sweet potatoes so thatís why I eat them. I switched to them from the potato. Now I rarely have a potato. The burrito was different from what I normally think of a burrito but it was good. I still have some black beans from it so I might have it for lunch or dinner tomorrow. I also exercised doing a lot of water activities and using the water dumbbells and noodle.

My healthy high point today was being able to do more in the pool. I focused on my core to keep me in place so when I was using the water dumbbells in the diving are it wouldnít propel me. This is harder than it sounds. I have noticed I have been traveling less when doing the exercises.

My health low point was my back pain. If was feeling well I would do deep water class but I felt it was best to let my body rest and heal.

Week Eight: It's a lot of work...

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Today was an interesting day. A group of swimming buddies wanted to meet and have breakfast before we went to swim classes. The plan was to go to two swim classes today after eating out. We all met at a restaurant that has very healthy options and an oatmeal bar, however it was closed and wouldnít open for a half hour. Since we were on a time restraint we opted to go to another place. This was more spendy and not healthy. I knew this and figured oh well, Iíve been doing good, why not indulge.

Iím very surprised at myself. I picked out garden veggies. Its veggies with hash browns, and I added an egg. I havenít had eggs in a long time so I figured this time it was okay. I drank tea and water. My best friend who is very fit and an aerobics instructor who has horrible eating habits had a huge cinnamon roll and crŤme brulee French toast. I only ate half of my food and took the rest with me, she ate it all. Her diet and my diet are very different. She is a vegetarian that eats a lot of processed foods. Iím a flexitarian that eat a great deal of whole/raw foods. She told me that her doctor said she can eat like an athlete because she works out like one with all the fitness classes she does. She also bicycles everywhere.

I think this frustrating. Iím this morbidly obese person that watches everything being put into my mouth and knows every single bad choice that enters the body. If I stray then I gain, it doesnít matter how much I exercise. My friend, eats garbageócandy, carbs. High sodium, and processed foods and loses weight. It just isnít fair. I know this and I tell myself apples and oranges, but itís still a hard pill to swallow. It's something I can't control so why stress over it. I just need to focus on myself.

Iím trying to stay positive and tell myself in the long run I will be better and to keep up and my outer body isnít matching the inside. Iím making healthy choices for my future self, itís just my outer body hasnít caught up yet. I will not be discouraged and quit. I just have to come to terms with my body and my process. Yes, I will have slip ups. Yes, I will have days of not making the best choices. Yes, I will get sick and have to stop exercising to let my body heal. This is life, things like this happy but itís my process and I am proud that Iíve taken the steps to start this journey. I knew it would be hard. I knew it would take a long time, and I knew there would be sweat, tears, pain, joy, and laughter with this.

My high point today was doing pool exercises for two hours. It was all low or no impact.
My low point was feeling the pain from going to the chiropractor.

Updated and finished Challenge for the week.

Eating like an athlete doesn't mean you can eat anything and everything. IT means eating larger portions, but everything should be put to fuel your workouts. Honestly, it sounds like you're the one eating like an athlete, even if you're not burning as many calories. Your body will thank you for your choices (which sounds pretty good!)
