You've got to drive the body to the last inch of energy, and then go on. You gain nothing by just going up to where you are exhausted.
The body will only build and grow to fit the demands which the mind makes. If all you do is exercise until the body is tired, the body will get lazy and stop a bit shorter every time.
You have to go to the point of exhaustion and go on. That way, the body will figure out, "We've got to build up more body strength if that crazy mind is going to drive this hard."
If you always quit when you are merely tire, you will not gain. Once you let the body tell the mind when to quit, you are whipped for sure. You cannot gain listening to the body.
We can become stronger. We only use about half the available strength of our bodies and less than that of our minds!
We can always take one more step! When we are on the attack, we can always go one more mile.

Illness is an option? We make the choices, even if we are not aware of it, to be ill by theway we live our life. Our lifestyle choices in food and exercise determine our state of health. Genes can tell us what our potential may be if we live a "normal" lifestyle, but our choice can maximize our health or minimize it.
Eating a whole, live food diet will give your body everything it needs to stay healthy and to repair itself if it becomes injured. Eating a processed food diet will lower our immune response and leave us vulnerable to opportunistic diseases.
Exercise, particularly intelligent weight training will strengthen our bodies and our coordination to prevent, so called, accidents that occur when we stumble but don't have the ability to regain our balance and just collapse on the ground. This inability is not a natural process of aging, it is a result of lack of physical fitness.
Eat and exercise well, live long, and prosper!

Today at the gym, the television in front of the rowing machine was set to the Today Show. One of the segments was a visit to a chef who was making a simple salad with corn, asparagus, and tomatoes. The salad dressing was oil and salt, no vinegar, as the acid came from the tomatoes. I decided to make it for dinner, but instead of cooking the corn or the asparagus, I used the raw. I sliced tomatoes and pre-marinated them in basil, Bragg 's Aminos, extra virgin olive oil, and a dash of balsamic. I made the dressing out of a little bit of sesame tahini, extra virgin olive oil, Bragg's Aminos, with a dash of Tajin, a Mexican Fruit Spice. Along with the corn and asparagus, I added a red bell pepper and a quarter of a red onion and mixed all of the ingredients together. I make a bed of mixed herbs, baby spinach, mixed sprouted greens, and alfalfa spouts. I spooned the corn salad into the middle and decorated the edge with kale for color and texture. My wife, Julieta, declared it a hit and immediately packed some for her lunch.
You can get ideas for raw foods from the many raw food cook books that are available at your local bookstore or online or even from the gym, where you would least expect it. Bon appetit!

Although I experimented with a Living Food Diet many years ago, it has been 43 years since I first tried it. The last time, I just left the Standard American Diet (SAD) and jumped into a frugivarian diet, eating raw fruits, nuts, seeds, and rood vegetables. I had only a short conversation in a coffee shop with an Indian Yogi to start me on my path. It improved my health, I lost weight, I left behind bad habits, but I only had this short conversation to guide me. I read books from he health food stores that seemed to confirm what I was doing, but I really didn't have a good guide and I eventually went back to my former eating habits.
Now we have so much more available in the way of excellent books. I have read several books by Brian R. Clement, Anne Wigmore, and Viktoras Kulvinskas. I have discovered Paul Nison on the internet, who post some great videos on U-Tube and has written several books that look interesting, but I haven't read them yet.
The first peace of advice is to educate yourself. Read the above mentioned authors and learn more about how to eat Living Food and be healthy. You can eat Living Food and not have an optimum life. You have to educate yourself. You can start by adding more raw foods in the way of salads and add sprouts. These are widely available in health food stores, ethnic markets, particularly asian markets, and even super markets. Add sea vegetables to our diet too. There are sites on the web with great recipes, if you Google "raw foods"; www.rawamazing is one of these sites with great information and interesting recipes.
You don't have to commit to total raw foods, but the more that you add to your diet to replace processed and "dead" food, the better off you will be. For example, I've eaten cooked corn all of my life. I have eaten frozen corn thawed in the microwave in the past with salsa on it, but recently I ate corn on the cob without cooking it and it was great. I cut it off the cob to make a salad and it was fantastic. Tonight I ate some fabulously fresh asparagus from Trader Joe's without cooking them. I made a simple dip with sesame, lime, and Bragg Aminos and they were delicious. Trader Joe's packages their asparagus so that the bottoms are not dried out, unlike the ones that I have seen in other markets and health food stores. They were so tender and good.
I recommend purchasing your sprouts until you feel that you want to grow them yourself. They are simple to grow, but they can't be neglected or you will have spoiled mush instead of sprouts; I speak from recent experience where I neglected to change my soaking water for a whole day on a very hot day. Phew! Sprouting jars make it simple, I was trying to improvise with lots of different containers as I have not found and unpacked my real sprouting jars.
Still with my mistakes in sprouting, I had some successes and sprouted sunflower seeds, fenugreek seeds, and pumpkin seeds, as well as soaking almonds to make them more digestible. Soak them with dried fruit for a real treat. The dried fruit is easier to digest and is so juicy and sweet, but the soak water is delicious too.
It is an adventure and a tasty one. I love to experiment with foods and sometimes I have a great success and sometimes not so great, but it is all fun and a great learning experience. Start simply and as you find things that you like, you will begin to look forward to expanding your Living Food Diet.

One of the members of the Indoor Rowers team asked about Live Food sources of Calcium. Some of the best sources of calcium in Living Foods are dried figs, freshwater algae, green beans, sea algae, sprouted sesame seeds, and sprouted sunflower seeds.
The reasons that people are concerned about Calcium are osteoporosis and muscle spasms. Osteoporosis can be more of a problem from eating too much protein and too little activity. Resistance exercise is great for preventing osteoporosis and rowing is one of the best exercises according to recent studies. The other reason that people are concerned is simply advertising.
