Eat a Frog for Breakfast.

This is not a dietary recommendation, but the advice that Brian Tracy gives in a book by the same name. If you do the one thing that you find hardest to do, first thing in the morning, the rest of the day will be easy. For some of us that may be exercise. A bonus for doing this is that after fasting overnight, if you exercise in the morning on an empty stomach, except water, then you will burn fat and not sugar as your source of fuel. If you drink a cup of coffee before you exercise, you will get a caffeine boost that will help you burn the most difficult fat to burn and I have seen my weight drop weekly since I have incorporated this into my routine. Who know, you might even get to like the "taste of frog". I find that I look forward to my morning workout of 60-90 minutes on the rowing machine, where as, in the past I hated exercise. I enjoy rowing and I like the reward of a measured meal afterwards too in addition to my ongoing weight loss. It is a win, win and no "frogs" were injured to make this blog entry.

    CODEMAULER-I only drink coffee before exercising for the fat burning benefits; I find that the rowing energizes me for the rest of the day too. I don't drink any coffee later, maybe a cup of tea, green or herbal in the evening, but not for energy, just the wonderful anti-oxidants and other benefits.

    I used to exercise in the evening, but I decided that I really prefer the mornings too. I go to the gym and it is better to look out the window at the mountains than see reflections of gym equipment. I feel that it makes my whole day easier mentally and physically. I'm charged up and ready to go. emoticon

    In Italian there is a saying (kind of parallel to yours) when you do something that is difficult but it is the right thing to do, you must swallow a toad.
I am a total morning person and can get anything done in the morning. I have gotten into an exercising groove, but I find it very difficult to exercise in the evening, even though I love it, just am lower energy in the evening.

    I read a book by a man who used to help army recruits get back into shape so that they could stay in the service and one of the tactics was to exercise before breakfast. recently suggested the coffee before exercise as well as Dr. Julian Whitaker, in his book Reversing Diabetes, also suggested coffee and no food before workouts for fat burning and optimum benefits

    This is typically my workout, caffeine or nothing but water before my workout. I tease that I like to workout before my excuses wake up for the day. :-) Your post suggests that I'm doing things according to plan!

    When I was in France, I found out that they have eaten so many frogs that French Frogs are now a protected species in France and they import all of them from Louisiana or SE Asia. I have never tasted frog, even though I lived in New Orleans for five years. I came to love their oysters, soft shell crabs, and Yugoslavian style steamed seafood, but never frogs. Point well taken. emoticon

    I'm not sure about the frog being a bad thing. In SE Asia I could have bought them fresh at the grocery store. There were tanks of them all watching you walk past them.

    HISINJAPAN-Welcome home. It is hard to imagine a gym not opening until 10:00 am. Here, the gyms are crowded early in the morning with people working out before they go to work. I suppose in Japan, I'm guessing that the "salary men" are already at work early in the morning to impress their bosses. I go to work later and work later, so I can get my morning work out.
JANRTEACH-I'm glad the some of the ideas are helping out. I've read that if you drink your coffee first, it will help you the most difficult fat to get rid of. My weight keeps going down after being stuck for a while, until I made my adjustments.

    Chanetc I have been trying to incorporate some of your ideas and it seems to be working. I'm so glad you are back in the loop. :) My husband and I walk every morning that we can around 2.5 miles. I usually don't have breakfast before so I guess I'm right on target. :)

Reversing Diabetes

My following the dietary and exericse recommendations of Mike Adams, I have lowered my blood sugar without depending upon Metformin. I've done this solely through exercise and diet. I row almost every day for over an hour and I eat the Mediterranean Diet of the people of Crete, but leave out all mammal protein and only eat fish and fowl for my primary portein sources.

    Chanetc -- so good to hear from you!! I'm so glad to hear that all is going well for you. I have also increased exercise to about 45 minutes a day and the fasting glucose is much better for me. It was 90 at the last check-up and although the doc never said pre-diabetes it runs in my family and 100 at the winter check up was scary. I have encouraged my brother who is 67 to lower his carbs etc. because he is pre-diabetic and we'll see how it goes.

    After reading Dr. Julian Whitaker's book on Reversing Diabetes, I decided to not take Metformin which was prescribed for me after I realized that when I exercise early in the morning, my blood sugar drops, if I took the metformin, I would have to eat sugar to bring my blood sugar back up and I would be playing a balancing game. Since I don't eat candy and had no desire to do so, I decided to follow Dr. Whitaker's advice and bought Mike Adams book, How to Halt Diabetes in 25 Days. I realized that my dietary and exercise changes were already close to his recommendations and so I made the switch completely. My blood sugar is now out of the diabetic range and is moving downwards to the normal level, with medication and 100% through lifestyle changes.

    The fish part of the diet is not essential for the program that Mike Adams created. I moved in the direction because of recently published studies about NEU5GC from the University of California San Diego, a molecule found in all mammals except humans. This molecule can be rejected by the body as a foreign invader and can cause an inflammation response. Many of today's diseases have unknown causes, but are associated with inflammation. I decided to be safe and eliminate all mammal products from my personal diet as I love fish and poultry. I only eat wild caught, avoid farm raised and eat lower on the food chain with smaller fish that have the least amounts of mercury.

After my last doctors appointment, I'm no longer diabetic, I'm considered pre-diabetic now, and my blood sugar is still falling back to within a normal range. emoticon

Interval Training Can Improve and Shorten Your Workouts

Can Save You A Lot Of Gym Hours

People may no longer have excuses not to exercise. Many people claim that there are just not enough hours in their day to exercise correctly. Interval training, experts say, can take an entire weekís worth of exercising and shrink it down to one hour.

Interval training is a technique that was designed for Olympic athletes, and it has been thought that the routine would be too difficult for most people. However, new studies show that older people and people with health problems have used the technique successfully. Experts say that this technique could revolutionize workouts everywhere.

Intense interval training requires working hard for a period of time, with a short rest and then repeating it. Experts say that a four set series of four minute sets including three minutes of rest is enough. It has been tested for running and biking and is expected to work with rowing and swimming as well.

Interval training is said to be twice as efficient as normal exercise. It can double a personís endurance, and increase strength and oxygen by 10 percent. A personís speed can also be increased by at least 5 percent.

    Interesting, I like the day2 program. Once I get better cardio doing intervals for a few months, I would like to do that once a week, training for the next Monster Erg. This time around, I was not able to row hard for the whole 8 minutes, and I was thinking of doing something similar to tahat, slowly building up the interval I can row flat out.

    Three Interval Rowing Workouts from Men's Health Magazine.
Day 1 The Pyramid
Row hard (90 percent of your maximum) for 5 strokes and then do 5 easy (60 percent). Now row 10 hard and 10 easy. Repeat but increase your count to 15 each, then 20, 25, and 30. Next, go back down the pyramid, decreasing by intervals of 5. Repeat when you're able.

Day 2 The 1-to-1
Row hard for 1 minute and then do 1 minute of easy strokes. Repeat, alternating hard and easy, for 15 to 20 minutes. Gradually increase your time to a half hour. Aim for 18 to 20 strokes per minute. After several sessions, shoot for 30 strokes per minute.

Day 3 The Sprint
Set your machine on a 500-meter interval program with 2 minutes of rest. Row at 75 percent of your max and then rest 2 minutes. Do 10 intervals.

    Do you do interval training on the erg? This is a timely article because I have just changed to doing interval training with the express reason that I want to improve my fitness but spend less time exercising. I was trying to do do the max for spark point 2 hours a day six days a week, now I am doing 30 min intervals on the erg 3x a week , Jeff Galloway running 3x a week and strength training 3x a week, and everything else is gravy. I still like to walk and swim and am planning a hike next week. Not much biking these days. I like exercising, but it is getting out of hand, not about fitness anymore, more about doing what I like instead of what I should be doing.

Why does 24 Hour Fitness have such poor maintenance of their Concept2 rowing machines?

At my local 24 Hour Fitness in the Grossmont Center, both rowing machines are not working. One has a broken support bracket so it is totally unusable and the other had it chain retraction cord replaced with an inappropriate utility bungee cord that makes the tension too tight and is potentially dangerous to the user's lower back. I've been rowing here for over 3 years and have been frustrated over the lack of maintenance or response to complaints about the equipment from not changing dead batteries, to repairing or replacing malfunctioning monitors that don't work. It is frustrating to have to travel to another gym, miles away from my home to exercise on a rowing machine. I've never seen machines in another facility that were in such bad repair (except in Santa Rosa, where they had two very old models without functioning monitors). I don't know if it is a budget issue or a personnel issue, but it needs to be corrected. Talking to the front desk or the equipment maintenance person has not been effective. Does anyone else have similar concerns about their club's maintenance policies. emoticon

    Take the complaint up a few levels OR vote with your wallet. It's hard to justify paying for a membership when you are unable to use the equipment.

My workout room is a community space in our condo and I am impressed at how well everything is maintained. My association dollars are well spent!

PC crackpot wants you to love obesity

Dear Friend,

There is nothing worse for you than being fat.

I can't put it any plainer than that, yet there's still a lunatic
fringe of touchy-feely fools out there telling people to love
their bodies no matter the shape. And the worst part of all
is that they're doing it under the guise of being healthy.

The latest, Michelle Allison, who calls herself "the Fat Nutritionist,"
managed to get the go-ahead from an editor at the
once-respected magazine Newsweek to spout her porky
nonsense on their website.

She writes that "self-acceptance, whatever your size, is good
for you" and gushes about how much she loves her tubby

I've got news for you, fatso: That body ain't loving you back.
It's killing you, plain and simple. If you know that and still fill
yourself with garbage, then you're suicidal. And if you spread
this deranged line of thinking to others, then you're homicidal,

If there's one part of the article where I felt some real sympathy
for her, it's when she described her attempts to lose weight. She
talks of the misery of counting calories and the pain of exercise.

That sounds like torture to me, too. One of the greatest lies of
this Age of Obesity is that the road to health is through pointless
exercise and needless dieting. You don't need to run marathons
or count calories -- just skip all the unhealthy carbs and processed
food, and your body will take care of itself for you.

Instead, the "fat nutritionist" turned back to donuts. She even
boasts of eating them while working in a diabetes clinic. In her
twisted mind, the image of a young, overweight girl munching away
on donuts is somehow comforting to the people now dealing with
the ravages of that lifestyle.

Give me a break!

She should take a good look around the clinic -- because if she
keeps this up, in 10 or 20
years, she won't be there as an employee -- she'll be there as a

But I guess that's one more lesson they don't offer at her school.
By the way, she's still in school -- the title "nutritionist" is every
bit as deceitful as the size-acceptance nonsense she spouts,
since she has no degree.

Just take a look at her blog, if you can stomach it: "Only in certain,
limited contexts does WHAT a person eats play a direct role in
their health," she writes (emphasis hers).

What sort of nonsense do they teach in schools these days?

What you eat is the single biggest factor in your overall health,
and anyone who disputes that is missing fat in the one part of
your body that needs it most: the brain.

So trust the "Fat Nutritionist" about as much as you'd trust the
"Drunken Doctor" or the "Sloppy Surgeon."

They're all bad medicine.

    I was reading her blog today and decided to search on Sparkpeople to see if people knew of her, so sorry for commenting on such an old blog post. You might have a point, or might not, but throwing around words like "fatso" obscures whatever good you have to say.

    It is interesting to me that the concepts of self-love and self-acceptance get tangled up around lifelong growth and goal achievement. I have a strong sense of self, accept myself where I am at this moment, love myself for who I am, yet recognize areas of my life (and there are many besides weight!) where I want/need to continue growing and improving.

Most disturbing to me in the blog was the comment: "Iíve done some hard thinking about what it means to be healthy. First, I learned to separate a personís state of health from their value as a human being. Second, I stopped seeing healthiness as an end in itself, or as a reward for good behavior. Instead, I now define health as a combination of the cards youíve been dealt, and the way you choose to play them. Even if youíre dealt a s--tty hand that canít be changed, you can still play your cards well enough to enjoy a meaningful life. "

The Fat Nutritionist's youth and inexperience with a long range view of health and chronic conditions really shows up in her philosophy. I'm not sure there can be a greater outcome to adopting a healthy lifestyle than good health. That goes for people of all sizes and shapes.

    Great sound off!

She sounds a little more than confused. To start with we are more than just our bodies, but we do live in our bodies and they transport our spirits around. It is our responsibility to take good care of our bodies ,like it is our responsibility to take care of our cars and other matters. I believe we should love ourselves, the person we are -our life ,today even while fat but not love the fat. If we love ourselves then we will work on getting healthier. We should never accept and be satisfied with being fat! Dissatisfaction is a great motivator. She needs to get real. The sad thing is she will influence many with her nonsense and be a stumbling block to them.

Thanks for sharing what you read with us so we can be aware of where some of these ideas people are latching onto is coming from.

    I was 185 pounds overweight, was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, Metabolic Syndrome, and finally Diabets. Fortunately, two years ago, I started to take positive action. I changed my diet, starting exercising, rowing, for an hour per day and I have lost 50 pounds. I have gained muscle too and enjoy working out with weights too. I am controling my diabetes with lifestyle changes alone and my cholesterol has dropped back into normal without taking any medication. I've changed my dietary approach a few times, but the primary one is watching my intake of all processed carbs, eating only fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grain sprouted bread. I mostly follow the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet. It is a middle path, not extreme and very healthy. My personal diet is more strict than their program, but I am still morbidly obese and want to keep my blood sugar under control.

Diet AND exercise is the key for me.

    She can keep her advise and yes you are right but I think that she will have diabites sooner that 10-20 years from now. If she keeps eating that way she will have it in less than 5.
