Never Quit Pledge

Tuesday, August 07, 2012

August 7, 2012

Today, I promise I will not quit.

I pledge that no matter, how many ups and downs I pass through, I will continue on my journey.

I pledge to make a NEW START today, and forgive myself for my past, and to stop being so critical of myself.

I pledge to take control of myself, to stop making excuses, and stop blaming other people or situations.

I pledge to treat myself as I would my best friend, because that is who I am.

I pledge to stay in the race and to be a WINNER!

Why Goddess Created Women

Sunday, July 15, 2012

Borrowed from MaryAlice on the UU team with some modification.

10. Goddess worried that Adam would always be lost in the garden because men hate to ask for directions.

9. Goddess knew that Adam would one day need someone to hand him the TV remote.

8. Goddess knew that Adam would never buy a new fig leaf when his seat wore out and would therefore need someone to get one for him.

7. Goddess knew that Adam would never make a doctor's appointment for himself.

6. Goddess knew that Adam would never remember which night was garbage night.

5. Goddess knew that if the world was to be populated, men would never be able to handle childbearing.

4. As "Keeper of the Garden," Adam would never remember where he put his tools.

3. The scripture account of creation indicates Adam needed someone to blame his troubles on when Goddess caught him hiding in the garden.

2. As the Bible says, "It is not good for man to be alone!"

1. When Goddess finished the creation of Adam, She stepped back, scratched Her head and said, "I can do better than that."

My June goal...not so much

Sunday, July 01, 2012

I set June as the month I would tame the monster that is my closet. It has a nasty habit of swallowing everything within reach of its maw. I frequently have to rescue the cat from its bowels, and that's not a pretty image. So here is how I did (or didn't):

By the end of June, I want to have accomplished the following:
1. All too-big clothes out of my closet
"All" was a tall order. I got some out, and the up side is that I'm starting to see space in there.

2. Clothes packed for donation, with donation spreadsheet completed.
Part way. I set up the donation template and have 3 bags ready to go.

3. Clothes donated or pick-up at least scheduled.
No half way here. Didn't even schedule the pick-up. Last year I scheduled a pick-up to get me into gear. Guess I'll have to do that this year, too.

4. Travel supplies cleaned out, and international travel gear consolidated and
But I didn't get this part done till July 1.

5. Old bags discarded.
emoticon period.

6. Closet neat enough I wouldn't mind company taking a peek.
I even hate peeking in there.

Soooooo, slipping the goal into July.

The closet is such a task, I have the this sister to your closet. Last year I put all my clothes on with the hangers backwards and hung them with the hangers backwards. When I wore my clothes I would hang them back properly after I washed them. If they were still hanging backwards after a year, get rid of the them. I still kept a few things, but it helped a lot.

SP website run by Zuckerberg?

Saturday, June 23, 2012

Change is not inevitable. Why change what works and what people are comfortable with? The Facebook change to that insipid Timeline was the last straw for me. My cover picture simply says, "I Hate Timeline" in bold, clashing colors. I can't say I'm sad Facebook's IPO failed. Now SparkPeople is copying the Zuckerberg Facebook model by instituting more changes that make the site less friendly, not the least of which is the change to the Fitness Tracker. I immediately found the button to take me back to the familiar, comfortable way of tracking.

The points issue is another matter. SP has changed its Spark Points page to remove convenient links to tools and to reduce point opportunities. Yes, I'm a points whore, get over it. By my calculations, this change results in a net loss of 3 potential points/day and takes away the convenience of having links I want in one place, forcing me to hunt if I want to use a tool. Remember when SP eliminated the point for liking or submitting a suggestion? I used to enjoy that feature, but now it's out of sight, out of mind, and I have no clue where the bank of suggestions hides in the complexity of the SP website.

Anyway, here's what I see:
No more Track Other Exercises (- 10 points)
Schedule an Appointment (tool I used daily) gone (- 1 point)

Track Food (+ 5). Really? More points for food but less for fitness? Missing the logic.
Comment on Blog (+ 3)

Net loss: 3 points.

I was in a training class this week with someone who left SP for My Fitness Pal. Starting to see why.

I track anything on paper and in my head (occasionally in notes on the smartphone)

Facebook is forcing me to get timeline next week. So, I just changed my privacy settings.

Next week, I am forcing myself to log off Facebook for the last time.

Gosh - I never noticed these things (though I do prefer the old Fitness Tracker page).

However, I have noticed that a couple of suggestions I've made in the past have been implemented, and I had a nice e-mail exchange just this morning with SP tech support when I couldn't find something I needed. S/he said that my suggestion would be passed up the chain, so I actually wrote a little software requirement for it (yes, I'm a developer!:), which he thanked me for.

All in all, I still think Sparky is pretty great, especially considering that it's free (I wonder if Customer Support and Programming are the same person:)).

I'm actually good with tracking food giving points, because I stick to my calorie goals way better when I track my food. One of the problems I do have with it is if you create a grouping of food that you eat together regularly, it only counts it all as ONE!!! So if I want all the points for my yogurt, berries, and flax or my cereal, banana, and milk (for example) I have to add them separately or I only get one point. :-/

I noticed these changes, too. I have recently started SP again after a hiatus. I did not really use the appointment book but I did not like adding food tracking points. Is it because we are supposed to be eating that many different foods every day? I wish they would explain it. I get commenting on blogs because that increases a sense of community, but what about tracking exercises? That was different than the "other goals" was it not?

PINKNFITCARLA 6/23/2012 2:11PM

I'm not really happy with the loss of fitness points either, and tracking is harder. Unfortunately, I think the button that takes us back to the old way is only temporary, until the new way is permanent, just like when the nutrition tracker changed. After a month of so, the old way was totally gone.

Thanks, folks. I did contact SP to voice my displeasure, and that's how I learned they added points for food and blog comments in the effort to "streamline" the page. Still scratching my head over adding food points, but why take away opportunities and remove links to tools?

Respect...There's an App for That

Thursday, May 24, 2012

Posted with source duly cited.

One of my friends shared this on Facebook, and I related the following story: In the *old* days when we still had those ugly black phones on our office desks, I was talking to my new supervisor one day when his phone started ringing. I stopped mid-sentence and stood there uncomfortable as he let it ring. Finally I asked, "Do you need to get that?" His reply: "No one on the phone is more important than the person right in front of me." Lesson learned.

I know a lot of people that sit and text while out with friends. I also see a lot of people in bars and restaurants testing and paying attention more to their phones than to the people they are with. Why go out with friends when you can stay home and text at home?

I often wonder how we ever got along without being tied to a phone 24/7. I totally agree that cell phones have taken over our lives. They are indeed separating us more and more. People in the same room text each other rather than talk?! What the heck?! And people don't seem to mind where or when they use them; I personally don't want to hear you have a personal conversation. . . . Sorry, you can tell, you touched a nerve . . .
emoticon blog - we all need a person like this in our lives. The world would be a much different place.

I'm fascinated by people who walk or sit side by side, and are both talking on their phones to someone else. I don't like phones much to begin with, but just don't see why you would do that. I agree with your boss. Attend to the person or people you are with. If the phone message is all that important, they will call back.
