Another Quote - Point to Ponder - Be Adventurous!

Thursday, June 21, 2012

I was reading an article from Outside Magazine called the 2012 Adventure Bucket List - 50 epic adventures to do before you die. In the foreword they talk about how Americans have and take less vacation than other major countries. Here's a link to the article for more info: www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-advent
ure/adventure-bucket-list/The-2012-Adv
enture-Bucket-List.html?utm_source=dis
patch&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=06212012

The motivational quote they start the list with is:

“One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am—a reluctant enthusiast….a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much; I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound men and women with their hearts in a safe deposit box, and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this; You will outlive the bastards.”
–Edward Abbey

Here in New Zealand we get 4 weeks paid leave a year plus 11 stat days, My work also give us an extra 3 days off between Christmas and New Years Day, a total of about 7 weeks leave a year. I guess we're lucky.

Points to Ponder

That first peak is the best place to pause and look back, to see if you took the easiest route, to learn the lessons from the first climb. And it is the best place to examine the terrain ahead, to change your plans and goals, to take a deep breath and begin climbing again.

Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing.
- Abraham Lincoln

People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.

As a mother of teenagers, do you know how many times I picked up the phone to apologize to my own mother?

Triathlon/Parks Passport Program

Monday, April 23, 2012

Well the self challenge was a bust again. *snicker* I laugh because the last time I actually did the entire challenge was pre-kids.

I got an e-mail at work a week ago advertising the Busy Woman's Triathlon. Basically you pay $20 to participate in the 4 week triathlon. Your $20 goes toward a women's scholarship fund at the University I work at. I thought it was a great idea so I forwarded it to a couple other co-workers to try and get them in on it. They signed up and off we go. Its nice to have others doing it with you. I have done a 1 day sprint distance triathlon before which was grueling but this will be nice and easy. The premise is within 4 weeks you do the swim/bike/run of a full triathlon length. You can substitute exercises for swimming, biking, running (elliptical for biking, etc.) and they have a conversion chart for the substitutions. This will help get me motivated to work out as it is all in good fun.

I also signed up for the parks passport program through my city. Starting in June, the object is to walk every park in the city by August. I enlisted a friend of mine who recently started Weight Watchers. I hardly get to see her so walking will be our time to chat instead of the twice a year movie/lunch.

These are something different so I'm hoping they will help jumpstart the exercise for me. I've been kind of burnt out going to the gym all the time. Now to get the food part on board (weekends!).

Self Week 1 Results

Monday, April 02, 2012

Well....

I did great until hubby's birthday and then it went down hill from there. Weekends seem to be my arch nemesis. Oh well. 6 year olds too. ;P

Week 2 here I come!

I am late to the drop10 diet. Going to start this week after tomorrow night's anniversary dinner.
Are you still following the plan? How did you do?

We all hit rocks in the road on this journey (heck, sometimes I've wandered off the road ENTIRELY!). The important thing is that you pick yourself back up and keep taking small steps in the right direction. Know that we're right alongside you!

Weekends are my downfall too. Maybe I should just work 7 days a week

Self's Drop 10 Challenge

Monday, March 26, 2012

It's that time of year again, where I attempt the Self Challenge. This year they have totally revamped the program and in 5 weeks the goal is to lose 10 pounds. I don't think I'll lose 10 pounds that quickly but I'm going to try and stick to my guns and make it through the 5 weeks. I'm tracking here as there tracking pages are cumbersome and slow. But I do intend to follow their interval stuff/toning. I did the toning one last week. My son started off with me but bailed after the 3rd one. The first one was tough! I felt it in my legs two days later. Obviously don't work those muscles much!

Went to a Zumba class for the first time last Friday. Really enjoyed it! Reminded me alot of Jazzercise with alot more hip movement and faster. My sister and niece liked it too so they are comitted to going once a week with me. Plus the price is right. $2 per class!

    Thanks for the encouragement!

KBECKNER6: Perhaps we can keep each other going! As far as the toning and recording it in spark, I look for exercises that are close to what is listed on the Self page and record that as what I did. For example the lunge pushup one, I just use the pushups as what I'm doing. Or if I can't find something similar, I just pick an exercise that targets the same area and record it as that. As far as the intervals are concerned, I look at what the elliptical machine says I burned in the time allotted and adjust the spark time until it equals the total calories that the machine said I burned. :)

As for the recipes, so far, the boys were good with the oatmeal meatball minestrone, The Seared steak with Asian barbecue. They hated the creamy lemon shrimp ( I liked it). My son hates anything to do with lemons and hubby hates broccoli. *sigh*

I started the Self Challenge too!! Yesterday, I got geared up with the eating regimen and today began the workout. I feel great!! Today I took my daughter to a bday party and only gave in to one small bite of cupcake and this evening we were at a play date where I knew there would be pizza and I totally stayed strong because along with me I brought the Amy's organic lentil vegetable soup, a cup of spinach; cooked it up and feel great!! They really have done a great job this year, I usually can't stick with them because in the past they have just seemed unrealistic or maybe this year my frame of mind has changed. Which ever it is I am glad:) How do you log the toning workouts on here? I too, agree that Self's website and logging is not user friendly and very slow and I seem to go in circles on it and don't really get anywhere. So am going to use Spark as well:) Best of luck to you!! emoticon
