Crimson Classic

Friday, September 12, 2014

Today is the 2nd Annual Crimson Classic at work. I work at a University so they do a 5k every fall for all students and staff to participate in. I signed up for the 1.5 mile walk. Normally I'd run/walk the 5k but I don't want one of my employees to walk alone. She has dropped 40 pounds and still going. So a group of us from the office will walk together. She's worried that she will hold us back. Last year I did it with her (we walked the 5k) and we came in dead last but I told her it didn't matter the fact that she did her first 5k was quite an accomplishment. Before she lost the weight she would never have done anything like this. It will be fun. That's the point after all, right?

We've been dogsitting my niece's english bulldog. So cute. But wow on the drool. We are used to labrador retrievers. Bulldogs are the complete opposite. Tire out easily, need to be careful about heat and cold, drool. Need to clean his face daily. But I've been enjoying him. He is truly a lovable dog. He gets so excited when he sees a flashlight light. Loves to play. I've missed having a dog since we had to put our lab down in July. DH doesn't want anymore pets. We have a 10 year old vocal cat. He wants to wait until next year for a dog. I think he is hoping I'll forget but not so much. I would love to get one now but DH is starting a new job so he is stressed. Don't need to add a dog on top of that. Ideally I would like to get a pup when school's out for the summer. That way both DH and son will be able to exercise and let the pup out while I'm working. (DH is a teacher.) The bulldog is 4 yo and used to being alone during the day. But I still walk him in the morning and night just so he gets out. Its funny, I've had people stop their cars to point him out to their kids as they drive by. You just don't see many bulldogs in my area. He goes home Saturday. I'm considering starting a dog walking service or volunteering at a shelter to get my fix until next summer...

Great idea on the volunteering - although it raises the risk you'll meet someone you just HAVE to bring home!

That's a great idea about a dog walking service (even a free one).

Weekends...

Monday, April 28, 2014

Went out to eat this weekend and made the mistake of not tracking what I'm going to eat at the restaurant before hand. Whoa. Eye opener this morning. This week I hope to track everything before I put it in my mouth and consult where I am at more closely. Plus, work out each day.

Good point to look up the menu and calorie count.

Eating out can really be a challenge - we think we're making good choices, and when we log the food we discover the REAL nutritional/calorie value of what we ate.

Live and learn! Planning ahead helps a lot. When you can't, looking for "grilled", "steamed", and other indicators of healthier preparation can make a difference. This was just one weekend in your healthy lifestyle journey. We're ALL learning as we go along!

Weird thing to be excited about...

Thursday, April 24, 2014

My oven died. The repairman came out and said it would cost $404 to replace the control board. So needless to say, I'll be getting a new oven. I'm so darn excited about it. I'm getting what I want not what my husband suggests. We went to Home Depot last night and he goes to the bottom of the line oven and says this will work. Uh no. If he can buy a brand new boat, I think we can spend a little to get a middle of the line oven. I'm using the 6 month no interest to spread out the payment so it doesn't hit as hard. It is a convection oven. Can't wait. My last oven was a pain as whatever the recipe said I had to add 25 degrees to the stated temp and another 30 min for bake time. So excited!

Back in Action

Thursday, April 17, 2014

I tried another fitness app and discovered I didn't stick to it because it lacked community. I missed checking out my various teams and interacting with other people! So I'm back to Sparking. My goal this month is to be consistent with recording and getting in at least 10 minutes a day of fitness. Yesterday, I saw my inspiration board when I was waffling on exercising at lunch and the first picture that popped up said....Get Outside! So I did. :) And felt better for it.

Weekends

Monday, June 03, 2013

Wow was I bad this weekend! I started ok with a salad but then had a cookie and went down from there. I need to carry a healthy snack with me when I am out and about. I got real sleepy in the afternoon and had nothing with me so ate a not so healthy McDonalds chicken nuggets. Sunday was just as bad. We were out on the lake and son got a bag a Cheetos. I did ok until afternoon again. Snacked on bad stuff. It didn't make me feel any better. So I grabbed an orange and ate that and instantly felt a lot better. Go figure. At least we ended the day with a fish fry and some veggies. I need to go to the store stat and get some healthier snack options.

Being prepared is half the battle! (I know this, because I didn't come to work prepared today and will have difficulty listing all the snack items that have passed my lips so far!).
