I thought I was going to go over my calorie range again yesterday. D*mn office meetings anyway. We had another one, and they had the big cookies again. Sigh. I waited until the end then sauntered by the platter. Stinkin' coworkers couldn't be bothered to finish off all the cookies, so there were plenty left. I felt duty-bound to take one.
emoticon
What? Is that a little too dramatic? Ok, fine, you're right. There was no duty there, just craving. And you'd think I'd learn! I ate the thing back at my desk and mostly.. sorta.. kinda.. enjoyed it. It was alright. It left me feeling somewhat cravey though. Not crazy (that's a normal state here, don'tcha know!?) but wanting more sugar and flour and crunchy sweet stuff.

I resisted, had a pear instead, and finished off my at-work eating with a string cheese. It was just right, and held me over as I headed to OHS to walk the kennel kids. I know I go on about them, but they're just SUCH lovies and make my day. Yes, my own kids are just as much lovies and snuggies and precious to me, even moreso, but the kennel kids are just extra special.

I realized my legs were pretty tired about the third or fourth trip back up the path. Roxanne can tell you I'm not a big fan of hills - I can do them fine, I just like to do them slowly (she does NOT have a slow gear in her body LOL) and this path is no different. The dogs, on the other hand, mostly like to go loping up the grade. At one point, I must admit, I was tugged up the hill by a little dachshund/mix! Oy!

Bill is settling into walking very nicely, so while he finished up walking a couple of kids an extra round, I spent kennel time with a few others. I brought out the brush and got positive reviews for my efforts LOL imagine a wiggling behind and little legs stretching to push back into the bristles for moooooorrrrrreeeeee!

All in all, a good evening with the kennel kids then home we went for dinner and puppie nuggles. Instead of cooking anything, I finished off the leftover chicken and veggies. It's probably a good thing I don't report on what Bill eats daily - you'd turn me in for spousal neglect. No matter how much I nag.. erm.. remind him he needs to eat healthily as well, he doesn't. He had a peanut butter and jelly sammich for lunch, and a peanut butter and jelly sammich for dinner.
emoticon
I offered to make him something, but he wasn't interested. I'm telling you, this walking thing is great for quelling an appetite! Anyway, perhaps that should be one of my new goals - get my husband to eat a healthy balanced amount of food each day.

Ah well. This is my Friday this week emoticon so I have another three days off!

We're kennel-kidding early tomorrow morning, then I'm getting my hairs cut one last time before the Half (I'm planning on letting it grow out), then hopefully doing some menu planning and grocery listing.
Saturday I've asked Bill if he'd like to come with me to check out the trail we'll be on for the Multnomah Falls Trail race at the end of the month!
Sunday we'll meet other OHS volunteers for a mulch-spreading party to beautify the trail area and then probably hitting up the grocery store and seeing about getting ready for the week.
Inbetween all of that, our own kiddies will get dragged around the neighborhood repeatedly to wear the lil boogers out.

Hopefully it won't be too hot here over the next several days. We've got stuff to do! And, I'm determined to not let weekend eating get the best of me. I'm going to make a point to stay on track, and on plan, as much as possible!

I have posted several photos on my DailyMile log, of little Buddy (our Chihuahua) WAY out there, pulling me along at the end of his leash! He's good motivation...

Way to track it girlfriend - but remember, the only behavior you can control is your very own.

That's the way to do it. The unconditional love you get from your furry kids and kennel kids is awesome, isn't it? You sound happy and back in the groove and I'm thrilled for you my friend!

P.S. As similar as you and I seem to be, sounds like our other halves are equally so! My Christopher will eat a PB&J more than twice a day too! As a matter of fact, he's just finishing one now for a snack...

What a perfect deficit! You are getting into a great groove! I still don't know how you keep up with all that walking!?!? My legs are sore from the 5 miles I did today! I think maybe I am just way to comfortable with my cushioned treadmill?!? When I get out onto the pavement it's a whole other feel! I sure hope I will be able to get used to the outdoors. I love the fresh air! I truly am happy you're back! :)

Our dog doesn't walk well on a leash...it's tug tug tug all the way and it wears us both out. Your volunteering sounds like great fun though! Do you ever get the Oikos greek yogurt at Costco? My dad gets it in KS at Sams Club which is the Walmart version of Costco and I bet they'd have it too. I didn't have one but it looked pretty good. Nice big servings.

You're really doing great, Candy--way to go on keeping things in balance! All you can do for Bill is suggest some healthy options for him, no way to force a grown man to eat well. Mine tends to do the same if left to his own devices . . .

I love that you call them sammiches... I do too!! hehe!

It sounds like you're doing a great job, balancing your meals and walks. That's fantastic! As for the hubs, having the choices there for him is good, and encouraging him is great, but in the end he's gonna eat what he wants to. I have the same prob with my partner sometimes. He used to be the world's pickiest eater (no joke) and would still probably eat oatmeal every night if I'd let him, but he's gotten much better about trying new things, even if he just tries it and still makes and eats his oatmeal. emoticon

But honestly, I think you're doing a wonderful job focusing on you and including him as much as possible. Keep it up!

It's good to get back to within range again, or at least closer to it. Dinner was delish and very satisfying. I swear I could live on chicken and veggies indefinitely (guess what I have for lunch today!)! If only Bill would agree with me LOL Ah well.

We walked down to the gym and stepped into the place for the first time in.. months. I literally cannot recall the last time we went to the gym. It's been that long. Sigh. It was nice to be there again. Jeff, one of the trainers, was Johnny-on-the-spot, greeting us right away with a 'good to see you guys!' which is why he's one of our favorite people there.

We both realized it had been long enough between visits that we could safely, without losing face, back off the weights a little bit if need be. As it happened though, nothing was insurmountable, and everything worked the muscles without taxing them too much. My left arm has always been 'weaker' than my right, and that was demonstrated clearly last night just with doing simply one arm rows. I need to pay a little extra attention to that left side to see if I can bring it along to more closely match my right. All in all, with appropriately timed grunts, we worked out and enjoyed ourselves.

We walked home afterward, and had a nice evening with the puppies before sending them off to crate and crawling into our bed later. We both groaned and moaned and laughed at how good it felt to feel so wrung out.

Here's to the first step of getting back on the muscle building track!

September already..

Tuesday, September 04, 2012

Whew! I just spent the better part of my day catching up on all your blogs. It's amazing what's missed over three days' time. Usually, I'd give you a summary of my nutrition and fitness for those three days. This weekend though, I kind of went off plan. Well, went quite off plan. I'd start to track for breakfast, and then lose my way somewhere along the time. So we'll just start off fresh with a recap tomorrow of today's intake.

On the positive side - I kicked big fitness minutes this weekend. Saturday we got up early and headed out for a 4 mile walk. Turned out to be more like 5.25, which was fine by me. I'd intended to do a nice 11 miles total, so after I dropped Bill off at home, I headed up and over Rocky Butte.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocky_B
utte

Bill and I covered 5.25 in 1:34. I covered another 7 in 1:54.
emoticon

I like that number. I like that I tacked on almost another 2 miles in 20 minutes. My left hip and hamstring was not nearly as impressed. Were it not for them, I could have made it 13 miles instead of only 12.

Only 12.
emoticon

So yea. I walked that walk, and enjoyed the majority of it. We started early enough that it stayed nice and cool the whole time.

Saturday afternoon was spent walking a bit more slowly but moving none the less to keep everything in good working order. I ate more than I should have, but felt I could get away with it, given what I'd already done.

Sunday was a bit less active. We did our shopping here, there, and everywhere, and then spent time with the puppies. Bubbie had his other eye operated on to repair a bit of a cherryeye bulge, so he's back in the cone of shame. There was much snuggling and lounging and moments if insane running around and barking.

Monday was a great day off. I decided to go for a walk before things progressed too much, so headed out for a tried'n'true 1 mile. By the time I got back, I'd decided to take the kids for their own individual walks. Millie went first, as she's the best walker of the three. She trots along at a pretty quick pace to start, but being a 30 lb lhasa, so slows down pretty quickly. Maggie was next, and she's a little sled dog! She use to pull something fierce, but we've gotten her a chest harness and her pulling has gotten much better. Bubbie went last, with his little conehead. He had a great walk, at a good clip, and he only dragged his head/cone on the sidewalk a few times.

They of course got to nap after that. Bill went for OHS training (yes, I've talked him into volunteering there now) and then came home. We went back together for some kennel kid walking, and in two hours managed to do our part to make sure everyone got some time outside. We got home, started dinner, and went about our usual business. Bill couldn't get over how tired he was, how much the walking took out of him LOL I felt a little bit of vindication at that, now that he understands I don't just go and stroll around, these kids, big or little, WALK with a purpose more often than not.

So yea. I had a lot of great fitness minutes put in over the weekend. 413 all told.
emoticon
1519 calories burned on Saturday.
1313 calories burned on Monday.

My mindset told me that my eat could reflect that kind of calorie burn. So I ate. Much more than I should have. I could have seen some great progress for all my efforts, but instead of slacked off and indulged far more than I should have. Darn these weekends anyway!

September. I'm going to add a few things to the mix here. It's time to 'rearrange the furniture' as our dear friend TurtleRaskin puts it. I need to get back into the gym. We're start tonight. Bill has agree to come with me. My left shin is a bit tender today, so it'll be a nice walk to and from the gym, with some weights lifted in-between. I need to settle into a workable weekly schedule or routine so that I can fit in everything that I want to do.

I want to keep walking OHS kids.
I want to get back into the gym.
I want to walk in new different places.
I want to make it out to the Gorge for some hikes.
I want to run a bit now and again.
I want to remember not to go nuts with my eating.
I want to remove a few more pounds this month.

I know I can do all of these things. It's just a matter of making it happen.
emoticon emoticon

It feels good to be back within range nutritionally again. I've also discovered that being physically active right after work helps quell my hunger in the evenings. By the time I have dinner, I'm satisfied and satiated and even when tired, my desire to snack doesn't have the chance to rear it's ugly head.
emoticon

So yea. I went out and did another run. What the heck, why not? Heh.

I'm so conflicted. I want to DO so many, too many things. After finishing the PHM in October, I really believe I'm going to focus on improving my 10K times. Successfully run 10Ks have netted me a 1:23 finish time. I'd like to improve that. It's half the distance of a Half, so I don't have to ramp up with all the miles, and therefore ramp up the appetite and delusion that I can eat like a lumberjack because I'm in training!
emoticon

I sort of had a talk with myself, wondering why I thought I needed to wait until ~after~ the PHM. Why not start now? So I've dusted off the C25K podcasts and have loaded them on my lil player. It was pretty warm out last evening, and I felt it, but made it through alright. That's a slow run time for me, but considering where I've been, I'll take it and build on it.

Today's the last day of the month. Seems only fitting that I weigh myself to see where I've ended up. Many of you have seen (and liked, thank you!) on my friend feed that I've lost a pound. This is true! I'd turned off a lot of my friend feed notifications for a while to allow myself some privacy for a while, but I think I'm ready to share more again.

Yea, I know, this should likely wait for recap of Aug. 31, but I'm not sure when that will be so I'm tossing this out here now. Here's my graph of weight loss for the month of August:

That m'dears reflects the times I weighed myself during August. It shows that I started with an initial weight of 242.something. There were some fluctuations but overall it shows that I had a 5 lb loss this month.

I'll take it!
emoticon emoticon
At some point, I weighed 247, and that was when I knew I'd let things get out of control and had to get my act together again.

I know some of you worried that my August goals were too.. broad or non-specific. After coming off a few months of only gaining, deciding to lose weight with no specific amount stated was what I needed. I've learned enough about myself that if I say I want to lose 8 lbs in the next 4 weeks, and I don't make it, I'll feel like a loser and it'll set me back. I'd rather be broad and successful than specific and fail.

So there you go. On this, the last day of the month, I am successful.

To me, dear lady, you are always successful because you don't give up. You might get discouraged.. but you look at what has happened, adjust and plan. You don't quit. You are a winner!

A loss of 5lbs in a month is a bit more than 1 a week.. hey, good average!

You know, I don't know how many she's done so far, but Carli at runningintoshape.com had some great free couch to 10K podcasts. (she also has some C25K too.) I've never listened to them myself, so I don't know how they are. But for free, they might be worth checking out.

Congratulations on the 5 lb loss! Way to go!

I love the fact that you were able to collate the information about working out after work and the affect it had on your hunger levels/ exhaustion/ mindless snacking.

You're making awesome progress!

5 pounds is 1 pound per week for the month, which is EXACTLY how you're supposed to lose! That is the recommended amount to lose per week, so you're right where you should be. So I say congratulations and keep up the great work! emoticon

5 pounds is great! Totally counts and shows you are moving forward.

I'm looking forward to weighing in tomorrow to see how much I've lost. It's been a wild and wooly month for me but the scale has moved downwards which pleases me.

We persist!

Interestingly enough, I had to adjust my calories out count. I wore my BB all day yesterday, and when calculating how much I burned kennel kid walking, it said 656 cals. However, when I entered that for my fitness, then checked the deficit report, I found that BB was reported I'd burned ~ 100 cals LESS than Spark estimated. Usually the BB has me burning MORE than Spark does, so I adjusted accordingly.

It's all a numbers game, isn't it?

It feels good to be reasonably back on track after that brief odd detour. We're coming up on the end of the month (can you believe it?? geez time flies..) so I need to evaluate how August has gone and decide what I want from September. I have a pretty good idea, so we'll see how it all fits together.

The stuffed peppers were delicious! I brought one for lunch today even emoticon I love leftovers, they make extra meals so much easier!

I need to pull together a menu plan and grocery list for the coming week. I didn't do that this past weekend, so we've pretty much run out of basic staples this week. We're out of bananas, pears, peaches, string cheese, grapes, all sorts of veggies, and worst of all.. Greek yogurt.
emoticon
Who'da thought I'd ever consider fruits and veggies as grocery staples LOL I've come a long way babee!

Let's sashay our way through the rest of the week, shall we? Work it!

Way to go! Those are awesome numbers!

I'm right there with you on the veggies - while veggies were part of my life, nothing like the stars of my life they are now. Good point.

I didn't do any grocery shopping this past weekend, and discovered this morning I am out of EVERYTHING! no fruit, no veggies, no meat, and only 2 eggs. So Not Good!

Great job! I'm curious, you show protein powder with your coffee. Do you put it in your coffee? I had never thought of doing that and mix it in my yogurt, but putting it in coffee might be a good idea.

Sashay what a good word that I seldom use! And it's a homophone! Better yet!

I just came home from the market. Mainly fruits and veggies for me, too. :)
